I've read a bunch of tutorials on Barneys and Retinal scanners but I still can't figure this out. The only problem I am having is that I can operate the scanner as being the player. How can I make it so that only the Barney can operate it?

give barney name barney (or something)
scanner's target : barney (or whatever you called barney)

What? That'll make it target barney, going?

Headcrab, it's just an illusion. Just don't make the scanner something like a button, which the player can use.

isnt the retinal scanner, when done by a barney/scientist a scripted_sequence and the retinal scanner a wall which is toggle to change texture?

I don't know off-hand how it was generally done by VALVe, but there are lots of ways to produce exactly the same effect.

Forgot to tell you that only the animation is diffrent and that it works the same! And if you will noclip into the guard's room you will see that there isn't any buttons in there and it's just that script! :)

Download the full SDK, afaik, it includes a few RMF files from Half-Life, and I think one of em has Barney using a scanner.

I remember that there is an example map on retinal scanners and barneys. But I've included almost the same thing in my example map! ;)

I already made an example map illustrating one of these years ago. I forgot to animate the scanner, though.

Yeah thanks Seventh, i changed the scanner so that it didn't target anything and now it is activated by timing from the multimanager.

And if you want it 2 look really realistic and make the retinal scanner give a nice "access denied" for the player when he uses it, just make a invisible func_button in front of the real retinal scanner and make its "locked sound" property to acess denied or sumpin...
When the barney you want will have to activate the retin, just activate the real scanner, not the fake btn... :)
