My PC crashes whenever it trys to play video files. It can handle some like wmv and avi (i think) but if its anything else (including some game intros) it stops working. It just freezes up.

important note: It's only started happening since i put my new HD in and reinstalled XP.

Bad configuration? Try opening the videos with different programs... :)

Not a program issue. The PC crashes when some games try to play intro movies too. :zonked:

Downloading nVidia drivers now. I think i was supposed to do that earlier but i forgot.

Nope. It's still crashing. It crashes in movie maker and media player and everything else that trys to play an Mpeg.

Format and fresh install? There might be a deeply hidden error.

Nah, I'd try a couple more things first. Get the mega-size K-Lite codec pack, for example, the WMP10 codecs (or latest, if they're old now), etc. Make sure you've installed your motherboard graphics drivers, too. DirectX?

Yup done that. Latest NVidia drivers for 2000/XP.

And I aint going to use WMP10 because Microsoft are using it to track illegal copies of XP. Its no different from WMP9 except for a tracking program and now windows XP users can't download WMP9. What a coincidence.

As I always say, blame microsoft (they don't even deserve a capital M).

That's funny, I got a Gentoo system up in less than 24 hours. Pfft.

I had to partition and format the drives, compile the kernel, install the compiled kernel, and configure lilo with almost no linux experience.

The linux installer did all of that for me, except the partitioning, I wanted to do that myself.

SuSE sucks alot of balls. It doesn't even have HALd, which means it has terrible hotplug support. It has decent coldplug support though.

Stop babbling about LINUX! I'm pretty sure you're not helping.
