OpenGL has less bugs but I think that software looks the best but it has tons of bugs! :(

HL works best with OpenGL

For HL, OpenGL is the best.

Because decals, like blood, bulletholes, explosion marks, don't show up in D3D, they do in OGL.

Agree Hunter. Software is for people without a decent videocard.

OpenGL is defenitly your best choice.

software .. has tons of bugs!
If you have problems running in software mode it's more likely that "bugs" arise because it's so slow (doesn't take advantage of hardware acceleration), rather than bugs in the OpenGL software itself. It's been around for a long time. Or, perhaps, you need to download the latest.

If you write your own software, OpenGL is certainly the choice unless you want to target Windows exclusively. OpenGL can be ported to lots of platforms.

I expected a discussion about which API was best, but no... ;)

Direct3D support was thrown in just before HL got released (or at least, it wasn't planned from the start) so that's why it works less good than the OpenGL mode.

OpenGL > Direct3D in general. Direct3D is, and has always been a terrible API.
