Carving... Arghhhh....
What you need to do is form a brush the size you want the hole to be, put it in the position you need the hole, and use the Carve tool.
This can lead to problems, especially if you are:
Carving entity brushes.
Carving brushes that are complex (cones, cylinders etc.)
Carving across more than one brush.

Test this out in a simple single room map with a block to work on till you get the hang of it.

Ca depends: it's okay for simple things. A word of advice: don't carve a 24-sided cylinder inside another!

Never carve cylinders in the middle. :)

the laternative to carving is to create all the brushes - the hole. like a square donut. carving complex shapes (i.e anything more than a block) makes wierd stuff happen like other brushes joining with the carved brush. like so. || ||__|
carved^ ^other brush
||*||__|* the area in the * is selected. they joined without any consultation with you. the cheek of it.

never carve with cylinders....that lesson was long, and very, very painful.

I carve with cylinders and never get any problems by the time i'm finished*

The trick is, editing the mesh of every carved solid afterwards, it's a lot faster than creating them, but takes more effort

The carve tool is hugely underestimated

If you manage to get a hang of complex Vertex Manipulation, then you can just about Carve with anything and sort out the results as Kol mentions...
I just advise against indescriminate carving till you have a better understanding of the consequences.

Sorry no AIM...

I am away from my copy of Hammer or I would write a detailed Carve instruction.... Anyone else want to describe which buttons to push?

Try to catch some of the members on IRC if you can.
And please don't let anyone hear you say that I know what I am talking about... They might actually believe it, and then I might start believing it ;)

I always tell a novice Carve = Evil and tell to learn clip and vertex tools first.
But Carve is not evil, is not bad at all, is a good tool to use, but only if you use it with respect.
Go here for to learn more about carve:s secrets.
