Suggestions for good-quality sites for the links page? Post them here. Don't bother posting your own, please, we're looking for big useful stuff to complement what we have already.

Whatever happened to jaardsi's irc tut? That was muey linkable.
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-06 16:39:25 UTC Post #139926
Not gunna get rid of the links page, jaardsi. Look how many times people have been pointed to the hl2world wiki.

Mephs: that'll replace the present IRC manpage.

For Source mapping:

CannonFodders Half-Life 2 tools
  • Mainly modelling tools, but since Source maps often extensively use models, a good link for mappers anyway
VMTCreate
  • A handy tool for quick and easy material creation
Interlopers.net - error page
  • A page that has listed a lot of (compile) errors, the tommy14 page for HL2 so to say
Zombie @ computers optimizations page
  • A well-known, reliable article about map optimization
HL2world.com - Source entity guide
  • What TWHL did for HL's entities, HL2world does for HL2's entities

but the members aren't friendly as here. frown - :|
The Snarkpit crew is a happy bunch of friendly guys last time I checked... ;)
But they do keep up higher standards than at TWHL and that might pull some people off. For example, they expect people to search for solutions before asking in the forums. Personally I think that's a normal thing, but it seems not everyone thinks like that...
Most of the old regulars have stopped mapping, though... :|

Anyway, another Source-related site:

The Ascendancy - Excellent Maps for Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
  • Lists the top of the custom HL2DM maps out there. Looking for a good map to play? Check out this site!

fileplanet gives you 1gb of free hosting! and savefile.com (I think that's right) gives you unlimited space, 60mb max file size. (you have to register there, too)

Fileplanet sucks for you need to wait a whole hour to download something! :tired:

elon, you're thinking of fileplanet.com, not fileplanet.us. Check it out! btw, fileplanet.us is pretty new, so maybe wait a bit with that one. Also btw, it's from the same guy as tekcities. (my website host)

There are some good ones in this thread, that aren't mentioned.

However, I see some virtue in having a links page that doesn't list every single thing, for organization's sake.

If I were king of TWHL, I'd prolly break down the links categories as such:

HL mapping links
HL2 mapping links

Then for each:

Editors
Compile tools/Front ends
Texturing
Sprites
Modeling
Sound
Misc/General

(Also, I'd list respective tutorial links under each subcategory)

But that's just me ;)
