Uninstall HL2, and download it from steam.

Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc

Change the drive letters as required.

Don't get viruses in future.

Good Suggestion Seventh.. lol

What Anti-Virus are you using, if you want a free one, get Avast, it is awesome, and I am Virus-Free

As for anti-spyware, I have a slew of tools:
Ad-Aware
Spybot: Search and Destroy
CCleaner
Spy Sweeper
Security Task Manager

Download them here:

I also heard AVG Anti-Virus is pretty good. Haven't used it, but PC World says it has pretty much similar performance as Norton's but has far more frequent updates.

Why not try and wipe out all traces of HL2 manually, and reinstall it again... Im a little confuzzled by your problem.. but I think that might work.
I'm not sure why your drive got redirected from a virus.. that seems odd to me.

-Computers, they are great, but troubleshooting them is a bitch... sigh..

In my case I would just reinstall Windows, It is less of a pain than to try and fix everything a virus messes up.

The only value from the registry I could help you out with specifically is

Start>Run . Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run and Runonce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Sofware > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run and Runonce

You can clear out anything from here that you dont recognize, and you wont screw up your OS (look closely at the names though, sometimes, they are odd, but recognizable)

As for Half Life 2, I dont know the specific location, because
a. I'm at work
b. I don't have HL2

I don't know if that will help your situation, but it is useful knowlege nonetheless.

did you already reinstall windows?

if not I have a fix for you. rename SteamApps to ~SteamApps. and delete platform.gcf and client registry.blog. then let steam re make it self.

the only downside is that youll have to completly reinstaull half-life 2. but anyother non-source game you should be able to copy from ~SteamApps to the new(and empty) SteamApps folder

Posted 18 years ago2005-11-17 16:05:37 UTC Post #147664
I have copyed from another old computer my old steam instillation to mine.
but i still get the same error.
Why should SteamApps be a short file name any way? It can`t have been befor installing HL2/steam the 1st time could it?

did you name it exactly as I said, aka ~steamapps

and if you want just steam download it from their website

search the net for RegCleaner (not RegClean) its brilliant or clearing shit out of the registry and use Diskeeper to continually run defrags once its all sorted out.

@Dorian:Nice! I'm going to try the CCleaner and Security Task Manager. :)

Have you tried RegScrub and Process Explorer. They're comparable products for those respectively.

Process Explorer is supreme.
