Detention is a map I created in august 2003 for a competition at Snarkpit. The map was inspired by early screenshots of the Nova Prospekt facility in HL2, and features prison halls, a plaza, and rooftops, with a lot of emphasis on vertical combat.
  • Fixed download again (as of February 2021).

Great use of depth... I think this would make a great DM map. Good to see you managed to keep the speed's down.

Cool architecture, I?d love to see it filled with monsters since I don?t play multiplayer at all :P.

Good to hear this. It's my first map released ever...

So, anyone who played it already? I'd like to know how it's in-game.

Bytheway, check out my site for more screenshots: www.cpcp.tk

Tested it now...I like it!
Commented 20 years ago2003-10-09 03:22:53 UTC Comment #301
You played it on LAN, or internet? How many players? I think the map is a little too big for only 8 players but I can't test it (no Inet at home, only LAN with my brother).

I use LAN w/out connecting to the net. But no-one ever plays me at HL :( I can only guess/know why...

OK, some more feedback please! I see it's being downloaded at a rate of 28,7 % of all who look at this, but feedback is a little spare...
Commented 20 years ago2003-10-20 06:58:13 UTC Comment #339
And the rating... 3 rates with an average of 4,7... I'd like to see more ratings!

NICE! I've been everywhere now. The beds are a bit lame, but the rest is so amazing that this gets a 5 :)

Sounds very good... bytheway, have you played it too? On LAN or internet? I'd like to know how the gameplay is...

I thought the Egon gun was too dominating...

The download link is broken, but I was able to retrieve from your website. I'll play and review it tomorrow.

Shame on you Captain P! I really didn't want to give 5 stars to anybody, but you deserve them. Just make sure not to make any maps better than this or the rating system will be ruined. I played an internet game with 2 humans and 6 bots, plenty of action! The textures are tight and I didn't see any mistakes in the map. Job well done!

YEAH! Finally someone who tested it for real! This is good news to me, craash420!

Well, I got a map upcoming that will tear your eyes out... ;) If you concider this as top already...

Check out the forums and look for screenshots of Mudanchee... ;)

You shoul consider making a HL mod with that designing skill of yours.
Commented 19 years ago2004-05-22 02:23:31 UTC Comment #1972
I am considering it. Although more likely for HL2. In the meantime, I'm just sharpening my skills some more... :)

Thanks for the compliment bytheway. :)

Once again, too boxy, the only decent thing is the stairway but that looks like it is boxy too. The RPG is anoying, and so is climbing up fifty stairways. I was going up a stairway and two people shoot RPG rockets at me. I had three choices, down into one rocket, up into the other, or jump susidally off the ledge. The gameplay isn't great but I give you a E for effort!

Lol!
Commented 19 years ago2004-09-14 05:14:27 UTC Comment #3929
I'd say jump off the ledge indeed, that's what I used to do a lot. 10 pct damage maximum is really helpfull then... ;)
Commented 19 years ago2004-09-14 05:14:49 UTC Comment #3930
But indeed, it's pretty boxy yeah.

Link no workie. Please pm me when this map is back up, 'cause I'd like to check it out!

I think I never dled it before, because I used to be 'afraid' of downloading from 'remote sources.' :P

K. Tried it out and I must say it's quite impressive imo.

+Love the intricate and not to mention huge layout. Well thought-out, fluid, looks nice, especially up top imo.
+r_speeds are almost nonexistent for a map of this size...great performance
+Stairs look great and are elegantly designed imo, albeit a little steep.
+I'm a noob at lighting, but it looked fine afaik.
-The Architecture and Texturing are fine, if not a little boring. If you broke it up more with stuff like the holes in the wall, or some grafitti, blood splatters, etc.
-maybe a little more detail in other places like Antenna array on roof, toilets and sinks and food cup in the accessible cells, etc.

To sum up, a nicely done map in all respects, except it could do with some more fine detail items, and stuff to break up some areas, so you can tell exactly where you are at any time.

"Oh there is the human remains, and vomit stain...I must be on the right side of level 2..."--which would all be appropriate for a prison, mind you :)

Thanks for the comment, rowley.

The map lacked detail because I was working towards a deadline, and there wasn't much time left. But it's a good thing to mention the landmark function of them. Nowadays I try to give seperate area's of my maps a slightly different theme or function to let players know where they are. And yeah, detailing things to give them more character helps greatly there. :)
