You're missing my point.

..and if you're actually implying that too remove the music from the lyrics would make you end up with poetry, then i'd say your view is even more absurd than it already was. The lyrics in rap are not intended as something that is written to be read. It is to be heard. It's not literature and likewise it is not poetry. But whatever.. let's get back on topic. :|

rap is more poetry than music, for better or worse, which means the emphasis is on the lyrics.
With all due respect, but I find this perspective hard to take serious. Obviously lyrics are very important to rap, but they should not be decontextualized from the music. Much of the strenght of rap is in the expression: the way a rapper uses his voice and seeks to add layer to the production.

Kanye West, on the other hand, just uses a beat, a bassline and talks himself up. That's it. That's his thing. It's tolerable in a club, but I'd never buy the album.
That's a bit harsh, don't you think? It seems like your mixing his arrogant personality in the media with the actual music he made. It's much like B.O.B. in my honest opinion: he made a lot of shit, but there are some songs with a lot of soul to it. I'm not an avid fan of Kanye West, let that be made clear, but he has made some great songs with a lot of warmth and feel to them. This for example. Furthermore, he does provoke thought - agreeing with those thoughts is second. B.O.B. is a bit too poppy for me and his lyrical content is anything but original. But then again.. I suppose this is personal preference and I wrote way too much on this already. Haha. ;)
Perhaps you don't have taste of music, so everything is good for you.
Perhaps you're just being a troll with a lot of preconceived opinions? :o

Akala isn't all that original. There are a lot of Hip-Hop crews with actual bands behind them and even though his lyrics were well meant he did fell for clichés. I'd say there is a lot of great Hip-Hop music, which is even to be found in the more commercial areas of that genre - be it American or European. Furthermore, Huntey, you mentioned B.O.B. as a good artist, but you don't like Kanye West? Obviously that's personal opinion, but could you explain why? I'm curious about that.

I propose a night dedicated to CS beta/alpha maps (think de_rotterdam, cs_arabstreets, as_tundra etc.) - kind of a retro history trip.
That's also a good idea.
Very true, most collab projects do end up taking ages.
Therefor you'll have better chances with people making small fy_ maps or whatever. ;)

A small tournament with only as_ en es_ maps might be fun? It'll be fun trying to actually work as a team and giving these lost gamemodes of CS a night of revival. :)

EDIT: What might be a good idea is a tournament with fy_ maps made by the community. Everyone (who wants too.. obviously) makes a fy_ map and we'll playtest them. Making a small fy_ map (for about 8-10 players) wouldn't be too time-consuming.

De_watertower was one of my least favorites to be honest. I kept getting shot from every darn corner of the map when I was CT. Aim_oldzone was pretty horible aswell. Not to forget aim_shotgun, where people were actually long-ranging with a damn m3. Speaking of m3.. I played half the maps with that shotgun. It's amazing how many 90-99 dmg-ers I got on close range and then lose the fight anyway due damn reload time!

De_dragos (even with the fact I must have played my worst game on T in that map) and cs_control (yes, the most ugly looking map outta all) I enjoyed the most.

Congratulations, Mario. Morally I feel like the winner though, since I got more tickets than the other four guys who played those whole hours through. Woohoo! :nya:

PS: For how long will the server be kept alive?

I'm pretty sure I got slightly over 200, with a few tickets I managed to get on the aim_shotgun and after a crash in ehm.. another map I can't recall the name of anymore. Nonetheless, it was pretty fun and I wish everyone the best in getting a prize. I'll be getting some sleep now. Much needed sleep.

When looking at all the response here, the Captain has a good chance of getting a prize. In that perspective, it's a bit unfair that he got there due a glitch. It seems that most people don't share this opinion with me, so i'd say just leave the poor man be.

I voted for door, btw. I like how he managed to give a certain feel to the scenery. Other entries I liked were Soup Miner, Hunter en some others. I tend to like small yet meaningful entries, instead of the 'big' ones that actually get most appeal here. :)

3 votes, so you can sorta rank 1, 2 and 3 would be awesome! Is this perhaps the most populair competitions to date, by the way? 26 entries... that's pretty massive! :D

Interesting entry you've made, Potatis. I'm not quite sure about the distinctive contrast between the white and black, but the blue tends to soothe it nevertheless. :)
Freshed this was pretty creative. Though g man d*** well knows he's one evil bad a** mother fu**er.
That's why he looks to the right in the second picture. My entry is full of symbolism and subtle hints. It might look minimalistic and too abstract and obviously it is, but that's why it's important to read the context in which it was made. Every brush-based object has meaning and it is for the viewer to reveal that. Obviously I could spill out every bit of meaning, but I want the viewer to put his own imagination to work. Hence it might seem a bit vague or even 'creepy' as quailcreek put it, since that was the direction I was going for.

Final

Name of entry: Reflections of a split personality.
Idea behind it: The two mirrors represent the two sides of the g-man. The blue represents the clean and formal personality, while the green represents the cruel impersonality. Blue as his coat, it reflects the formal side of things. He speaks at an odd tone, but calm and controlled nevertheless. Green as his somewhat alienated bonds - the yellow crystals giving light are also a subtle hint -, it reflects the informal side of things. Behind the coat the g-man has blood on his hands. Or does he? He has no honest reflection, for his role is vague. He moves his head from left to right, from blue to green, from formal to informal, from good to bad. Who is he? Even the g-man himself doesn't know.

Further comment: I had atleast 7 errors making this. I spent way too many time on this. Matter of fact, it really got frustrating and didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to do. Still, I stuck with it and hopefully I can atleast contribute to the turnout.

Obviously 5 brushes stand for the skybox, which leaves for 30 proper brushes.

EDIT: Bah, with the loss of quality due .jpg my pictures look distorted! :(
EDIT:EDIT: Referring to earlier discussion.. I went for the 'minimalistic' perspective!

It looks very Unreal Tournament-ish, Tetsu0. Amazing quality for goldsource, but then I saw it was actually made for source. That was dissapointing, but it's still a great entry.

I'm wanting to enter, but unfortunately I'm having some lightning issues that I can't seem to track back to the compile logs or anything.

@ Capt. T: With atmosphere I just mean the whole 'feel' or look of the map. So far i'm impressed with the actual structures you made, but the picture as a whole misses a 'soul'. Try to incorporate the structure in the rest of the environment, so it seems part of the environment. The sky is certainly key in this one. Perhaps i'm being a bit too abstract now, but I hope my point comes across. The entry looks good, don't get me wrong, but it can be better with just a few touches of love! ;)

@captain terror: Even though it's impressive how much you can get from one brush, I would advise you to work on the atmosphere a bit more. The grey dev-like texture doesn't do it for me and so I don't find the screenshots very appealing. However, that's just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of people will vote for the complexity you managed to work into the brushwork. Still, hopefully you'll get time free to tune it a bit more! ;)

Last week I picked up mapping again. So far it's been a rough journey, but I managed to resolve all the issues I came across. Except this one. I think it's best to illustrate the problem with a picture first:
User posted image
As you can see in the right corner, there is a spot of unwanted light. It's because of the gate in front of the lightsource in the left corner of the screenshot. Now from memories I reckoned these issues were solved by turning it into a func_wall - which it is anyway, on Solid [255], to remove the blue spots from the { texture - but that doesn't seem to work. The ironic thing is, I have the exact same set-up on the wall parallel of the one shown on the screenshot. However, it hasn't got the unwanted lightspot in the corner. Is there anyway to remove that unwanted bit of light? Perhaps different settings for the func_wall? Answers are much appreciated! :)

PS: How come the picture isn't showing up, unless you click on it? Too large?

Apperently I was quite a douchebag back then. I still got two PMs in my inbox, where Orpheus and Elon Yariv call me out for that. Imageshack is being a bitch however, so I can't be bothered to upload the images. I think, but I can't quite remember, Striker and Jimmi (of which one is already posted, I see) sended me some hilarious PMs aswell. Ow, I was such a badass. :aggrieved:

From what I recall, there was this whole ''I hate Jimmi'' topic. On which, by the way, even the admins joined in to call out Jimmi for his odd behaviour - didn't he have like tens of different accounts? Anyone still got that topic saved?

I just randomly decided to give this site a visit and then I see this topic. It's somewhat hilarious how important this site used to be for me. Good to see this topic, though. Just for laughs. :D

I can't even quite remember why I chose this name. FresheD is a shortened version of the nickname I always used while gaming, Freshy Fresh, which I only ever used on TWHL. Freshy Fresh had a nice smooth ring to it. I probably was influenced by the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but like I said i'm not quite sure anymore. :)

In all honesty, I really try to understand your views but I couldn't help but to disagree with most points you have writtin'. I won't go into it too deep but I couldn't help but wonder why the hell you even put all that effort in these damn long posts of yours? How the hell did you came into this discussion in the first place? But most importantly, why the fuck do you care?

The one main contradiction on which it all comes back is very simple; you disagree with the way and who gave critical response to your maps, and therefore you don't value them and don't care. Yet, you seem quite upset about those few responses (since most people have praised you here) as if they caused some sort of personal trauma. Do they hurt your feelings or what? I would seriously advise, and this might come across very rude, to just fucking grow up and deal with it. I mean.. damn.

Back 'n the day I would most certainly call myself a regular visiter of the TWHL IRC channel. Nowadays I don't bother anymore, not because the people in it aren't fun (Luv u Strideh) but more because all the people are Australians which are in a whole different timezone then myself. Hence, I'd have to join in at the morning to catch some chatter - which honestly, I can't be bothered at due obvious reasons of life. The only interesting dude in the channel at my times, is ZL.. who mostly just idles. So yeh, there isn't much reason for me to visit anymore.

....

Also, I would say this site is less active than before. Not so much in users, but more in activity itself. I told Strideh and Ant thousand times before, we need to focus on Source more - but they never come further than promises. And yes, I'm aware you guys have busy lives - but lots of people, including myself, have voluterend (spelling!?) to help anyways.

Ricochet is different, and when something is different it either gets praised or hated. Ricochet is a different style of game you're used from Valve, specificly the popular games back 'n the day like HL and TFC, and so it got lost in the violence of HL and its mods. Which is quite understandable really, I never used to play Ricochet either, for it is also a small and basic game.. but still, I know for fact some people never really gave Ricochet a fair try for silly reasons like not being able to jump by yourself. :ninja:

About the game being confusing, I honestly can't believe that, because it isn't a complicated game and if you're somewhat of gamer you would understand how it works in less than a few minutes. But just because you understand how it works, doesn't mean your good in it, and I think many people see those two things as one. The thing with ricochet is, while its basics are simple, it is hard to master as a whole (good strafe jumping, aiming and prediction). However, isn't that with every game? You'll just notice it more quickly with Ricochet for the game is hectic, fast and small.
For about half an hour, you if have a decent number of players
I'd have to agree with that, it isn't really a game for long sessions (more than an hour), but to get some fast games going fraggin' round it's just right. :)

EDIT: omg, what a bunch of text. Heh, I got carried away I guess.
Tl;dr - Ricochet is awesome for what it is, if you just give it a fair chance.
