I agree that the file-sizes Fraps outputs are insane, I recorded a 1 minute stint of NFS and was about 1GB, but slap it in a Video Editor for 2 minutes and it'll come out whatever size you want it.

Other than that, I loooove it - its so simple to use, they know what people who use it want, and having used Fraps and CamStudio, I think Fraps does a much better job and has less impact on performance.

FRAPS doesn't suck, the only downside is the large file-sizes which is hardly an issue after compression. What don't you like about it?

I remember having that problem with a X1900XTX, turns out it was running in Direct3D and had to switch to OpenGL so that is definitely your problem.

However, I can't remember how I solved the issue, but have you check ATIs control panel for options?

Yeah I totally agree. Another problem I have is that I get ideas all the time, great ideas, but they're only snippets. I then immediately start work on those ideas with little thought for anything else. Then my enthusiasm kind of fizzles out.

This afternoon the most awesome idea for a map introduction hit me, basically involving a lift, blackout, and similar intro effect to that of HL2. I instantly wanted to make it - opened Hammer raring to go, but then thought, "Then what?" My map folder is full of 5 minute wonders with these ideas, worth nothing.

in When was the last time you opened Hammer Post #251235
I re-installed my Steam games yesterday after a recent format, along with HL, and it reminded me that I hadn't actually installed Hammer and what not since the previous format (probably around January) I put it all on today and had a trawl through some of my rmfs and had a good laugh.

However what this made me realise was that I haven't actually mapped for ages - I logon to here few times a day still, but I've also noticed that I rarely check the HL forum anymore, which I aim to getting into a habit of now. Of course I do have less spare time than I used to, but the free time I do spend on the computer 'gaming' has me purely playing. I just had a bit of a play around in Hammer and forgot how much I loved mapping and the satisfaction it gives me.

With exams over and a long summer ahead before Uni, I'm going to have a lot more time to play with, so i'm hoping to get Arena Room 2 or even a mini-mod out before the end.

I guess I'm just interested as to how much time everyone spends mapping and whether, like me, they are also guilty of this.

Try compiling with Full Vis, if that doesn't work, go to the co-ordinates with problems, apply func_walls those brushes. Otherwise it could be you have to many complex brushes in that area.

Also, you haven't got a box around you whole map have you? Because that causes a bot of MAX PATCHES errors

in Old Notebook HDD replacement Post #250068
Yeah, it should be a really easy job to replace, HDs are usually found in a seperate compartment to the rest of the main-board access on a laptop, like this. Under the plastic base, there's just a few screws and then you slid it out of the connector and lift.
User posted image
Make sure the new one uses the same interface, e.g. SATA, etc. If you know what you're looking for then thats fine, otherwise it should have it written on the top of the old one.

The only official Death-toll i've come across stated 22,980, so yeah those number sound about right. I don't know how they treat the missing but presumed dead cases, of which there are many more thousands.

What surprises me, at least in England that is, is the relatively low amount of attention it seems to be getting from the media, I remember the Tsunami - that Boxing Day nothing else was shown on television, yet here, half our members hadn't even heard of Burma!

Google is your friend!

When I want to make a map within specific guidelines, such as a swimming pool, my favourite port of call are Artist's impressions. Their so clean and focused, so if I can use one of them for ideas, I do.

Take a look at this one, I used a lot of ideas from it for my Pool Compo Map...

in Earth Hour 2008 Post #248159
I'm not sure about their statement that a dark screen uses the same amount of energy as a light screen - surely there must be some difference, otherwise why would laptops dim their screens in order to conserve battery life?

I think Blackle looks great, and in fact I preferred the look of Google over the last day to the original - I love the black. Especially after a gaming session or sitting in the dark for a while, I hate being confronted by a blearing white Google search - It kills my eyes!

Obviously Google was just making a point, and being the most used search engine it is guaranteed to generate A LOT of interest - but to be fair, its the equivalent of all the political snobs who drive Range Rovers and Jags on a daily basis that are buying Prius', just so it looks like they are doing their bit for the environment. But it the end, if it helps make a difference, i'm all for it.

I grant that rant was purely targeted at Google not at Earth Hour, but hopefully you see where I'm coming from!

Some of you may have noticed Google has turned the lights out to show support to Earth Hour 2008...

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour ? from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

Will you be turning your lights off?

Surely both, take Black Mesa Source as an example. Anyone who's played HL and sees BM:S will instantly recognise the scenes, yet they've been greatly improved. They keep the basis and build on it, so you'll have to be clever in order to achieve the right balance.

If you want to test something, without having to recompile everything, make a new map, and test things there, and when it works, copy and paste it into your real map. If you want to move something without fucking up the textures, use texture lock (the "tl" button, Shift+L or Tool>Texture lock).
...Or just set the compile boundary :)
