Wow, I didn't realize anybody cared about the Zune anymore. What a lame product that was.

I'm not sure Microsoft could compete this way. If Sony can't even barely hold it together with the PSP, I don't expect Microsoft could do much better by combining a failed iPod competitor with some fancy graphics.

Tito, I kind of agree with you, but how can Wal-Mart seriously hope to compete when all they've got is an automated games dispenser that doesn't work 80% of time? Just because they're offering a new service doesn't mean they're looking to outdo big vidya game retailers.
I went to EB to buy 'The Path of Neo' game. Second hand, it was $80, brand new was on special at 50% off for $70...can someone tell me how that works
As Keanu Reeves would say, whoa.

Sure I'm sure. It even has an ethernet port, but no modem. It was supposed to be some kind of network terminal in the late nineties, it only came with Windows NT on it originally. It's not that it's really old, it's just very low end because they fit it in a small form factor case.

Man, Windows 98 is a bitch for drivers. :P

Didn't EB games or some place stop carrying used games because game manufacturers were losing sales and nobody was buying anything new? I know it's been a real problem, because games are so ridiculously priced, most people are just buying used. I know I did.

Well, it's obsolete , but I don't think it's that old. It was only made probably in '98 to '00. And that Part Medics site, it says they charge a minimum of $150 for an order. :gak:

I'm probably just going to look for a cheap external USB drive. Until then, I can run everything off my laptop's drive over the network.

I know it's a long shot posting this here, but I'm trying to identify a very obscure connector on an old slimline HP PC that I'm trying to get running with a CD drive. Documentation for this model is extremely poor, and there's barely any references to it anywhere on the internet.

Here's the connector I'm talking about. It's the smaller one below the main IDE connector, simply marked "CD_ROM":
User posted image
Now, I'd just as well use an ordinary IDE CD drive for this, but as it turns out there's a single power connector inside the computer, and it goes directly from a plug on the motherboard to the hard drive it powers. Branching off of this apparently overloads the connector or something, because it won't power up if I have it connected to a CD drive and the hard drive. This mysterious CD connector must have a built-in power feed going to it, not like regular IDE cables.

So, uh... any ideas? I will be amazed if anyone figures this out.

There aren't many graphic cards that can run on a 230 W PSU
Sure there are. I install them in computers all the time. you don't have to get an ATI Geforce Ultra GTXXZZT100006709 GT ULTRA HD Special Edition to play Half-Life with OpenGL. That's why I said, basically just go and find the cheapest card you can find and it'll run HL1 and probably HL2 without a hitch, no big-ass PSU required. As long as you aren't running three hard disk drives and a bajillion expansion cards, you'll be fine.

How long can humans survive after they've passed out from lack of oxygen? They might say you have two hours to live, but isn't that kind of dependent on how you're spending that time? If everybody was asleep, the oxygen could last longer.

twhl's downfall
Why the hell do you keep bringing this up like it's an issue? TWHL is doing great as ever, stop being so dramatic.

Last time I searched around for a deathmatch game, there were plenty to choose from. There are all kinds of servers out there, maybe you just aren't picking the right ones. It's not TWHL's obligation to host a server all the time. If somebody's generous enough to run one, so be it, but to do anything except run a server from your desktop temporarily is quite an undertaking. You need either a lot of bandwidth and a dedicated machine, or money to pay for a server. If you're so concerned about it, why don't you dedicate your own money towards the cause?

I personally have plenty of computers I could use to host a server, and I even did so for a time, but my network would be choked with it running constantly.

Also I vote for a 7 star rating system, ten whole stars is just too much to handle. TWHL is dying because we have fewer stars than competing sites.

Another thing, you haven't by any chance made all the trim into one big func_wall have you? 'Cause I'm going to slap you with a large wet trout if you did.

You need to try and pinpoint the reason that these trim brushes in particular are so special. Try and reproduce the effect if you can. If you can't, then would the error still appear if you simply recreated every one of those trim brushes?

I've played these little time-wasting games before, but whenever I get finished I feel like I could have spent that time on something much more productive. Even re-playing an old real game is more fulfilling to me. I guess I'm lucky, I never get so incredibly bored that I have to resort to playing repetitive casual games.

Well Zeeba, It couldn't hurt for certain kinds of competitions, but if the focus is more on pure mapping than anything else it sure helps to even out the competition like I said. Plus it really forces mappers to use ingenuity with their textures instead of making a specific one for every minute detail.

We don't really know what the focus of the competition is yet though, so I can't really say...

I do like your "map a dream" idea though, although I don't really care either way since I won't be entering.

That previous post of yours was barely understandable, but I get the jist of your point.

That's not to say I agree with it. The purpose of limiting textures to vanilla Half-Life stuff is to level the playing field and accommodate people who are not endowed with two-dimensional artistic abilities. Contrary your apparent belief, good textures are NOT easy to develop for most people, and making good ones takes more effort than slapping together some cheap blended edges in Photoshop. In fact, your example of Rimrook's maps highlights the exact reason why custom textures should not be allowed - people with real texturing skills like Rimrook would have a vastly unfair advantage.

...and your 1337 5p34k isn't helping your argument much, to be honest.

I don't care who you are, if you've taken the time to develop a mod and then go release it on multiple mapping sites, you're obviously looking for a little bit more than personal artistic gratification. When you go to that much effort and release your mod to the public, you're doing it because you want your work to pay off, and you want people to enjoy playing it as much as you enjoyed making it. If you genuinely aren't trying to appeal to anyone's taste in mods, then there's not much point in releasing it - after all, nobody cares how much the author likes his work, people want to play stuff they enjoy.

Now, I don't want to sound all preachy and self-righteous here, but maybe that's the difference between you and a lot of other modders out there. Personally, I get more pleasure from seeing others enjoy my work than I get from just accomplishing personal goals. That's why I put stuff out there that I think other folks will like, because it makes me happy to see them enjoying the fruits of my labor.

The Dreamcast community was dead when I was searching for it four years ago, I don't think it's improved any. You can probably get PS2's for 50 bucks or less now, and way more support.

I don't know how many times the argument has come up... but it's pretty tiresome that at this point people are still afraid of using programs like Steam. Unless you're running a Pentium III, it's not a system hog. I have it running 24/7 on my 3+ year old machine, and I don't notice any difference at all. Your average antivirus software slows your PC down more than this. You're basically opting out of a huge resource from paranoia over an issue that doesn't exist. Valve isn't Big Brother.

Meh, whatever, I'm not going to waste any more time convincing people.

Yeah, I don't really map any more, I just come here for the community and to goof off. It's never been a really busy site, although before the TWHL3 revision it got pretty damn crowded at times. There were a lot more interesting members back then in my opinion. I also think there may be too many new members that came here at once. Used to be there were a few new members at a time, but to even it out there were a LOT of people that knew their shit about mapping... not so much any more. I don't see the same kind of awesome creativity any more either.

Another thing, I'm not sure if anyone's noticed how few and far between help threads are anymore. I remember I used to help everyone out because that's all there was to do here, and I'd diagnose problems in minutes. Now I can't be of much help anyway, but even if I wanted to there's not as much opportunity between "describe the person above you" and threads like this.

Oh, and #twhl3 is pathetic. Nothing ever happens there. The decision to abandon #twhl was one of the worst moves ever for this site as far as I'm concerned. It's dead every time I log on, and Nickelplate was like the only person who made #twhl interesting in the first place. Now he's on #failreactor, so I just go there like twice a month.
