I don't know NineTnine, if they even have recording facilities (which I'm not sure about) they don't just want random people waltzing in and using their equipment like that. Anyway, like I said, I spent a bunch of money on this real nice microphone ($200+), and it sounds great. I'm just getting a lot of background noise from partying neighbors and stuff right now. My recordings sound perfectly acceptable. If only I wasn't working in an upstairs bedroom sandwiched next to college students, it'd sound even better.

However I have had to start all over now, making everything in 8 bit mono 11050 hz just to be sure it meets Valve specs. It turns out just as fuzzy as the original voices. :)

Oh, and I'm in 10th grade BTW.

Yeah, I don't really know how to record in 8 bit using Goldwave. The way they seem to have it set up, it's only an 8 bit file after you've already saved it. You can't really seem to record in 8 bit.

Edit: Okay, apparently Adobe Audition allows you to record in 8 bit... that's what I just read.

Edit: It now appears that recording in 8 bit is not in fact limited by software, but by hardware. My hardware, as well as most other hardware is just too new to support anything lower than 16 bit recording.

I can now record pretty good in 8 bit with Windows Sound Recorder. I'll just use that.

Yeah, that's a real fantastic idea NineTnine. Hire out a sound studio. No problem at all there. What with Jeff's bottomless pit of a bank account, I'm sure he can just toss a cool ten thousand into hiring out a studio for his personal hobbies and all. Shit, everybody does that.

Well Jeff, I got those two lines all done for you, but if you want lipsyncing to work on your models I believe they're gonna have to be 8 bit. And won't you know it, when I convert them to 8 bit mono they sound like absolute shit. Totally unusable. It sounds like a 747 is taking off in the background and a hairdryer is being blown into the mic at the same time.

I've run into the same problem before.

By the way, I notice everyone else is putting in a bunch of radio-like voice effects and stuff... am I supposed to be doing that too?

I think the first game I ever played was either Ocarina of Time or Sled Storm on the PS1, both at different friend's houses. Now I've ended up owning both.

Sled Storm really was an awesome game, but unfortunately the snowmobile racing genre never really seemed to catch on. It had pretty nice graphics considering its platform, and in fact I'd rank the visuals up there with Spyro for its well-executed approach to detail on a large scale.

The only songs I get nostalgic for were on the Game Boy Color like in Pokemon and Zelda, because for a long time that's all I had. Pokemon Silver was the first game I ever owned, and lemme tell you, for my eight year old mind that was just about the most immersive and realistic thing I could fathom. Frickin' MASSIVE world, it seemed.

It literally bounces the light more times off a surface. You know how in real life light bounces off everything, right? Well, same here. With too much bounce though, stuff starts to look really bad, almost to the point of being fullbright. It's smoother, but there's less contrast. I think 10 is too much for most maps. I almost always leave it at default, though I have made use of it for light error correction.

I still have my 200+ dollar unused voice recording equipment hooked up (shit is SO cash), so give me a line or two and I'll give it a shot. No guarantees though, as I might decide I still sound shit.

To get my truck out of the garage and in driveable, or at least running, condition. I don't think I'm going to have any problems considering I actually want to do it. The reason people fail at resolutions so much is because they have little motivation, or no clear goal. Choose something you're actually happy to do all the time, and you're on your way to INSTANT SUCCESS!

Visgroups don't do anything in-game. The cordon tool lets you designate a little section of your map to compile in, and I believe it blocks off any leaks as well.

That's funny, I've used the cordon tool many times before without any problems. Glad I never had my map destroyed.

You might want to try finding the RMX backup and renaming it as RMF, it might still be intact.

Wuuuuuuuu....t? Why would you want people to wadinclude their textures? Wouldn't you need the RMF and the WAD anyway? Seems like you could just combine all the custom WADs when you're ready to do a final compile. Also, seems like it'd be a bit hard to standardize texture lighting, since I assume that's what most people are going to be using. Everybody would need to include their own lights.rad file and hope there aren't any conflicts with other maps. Multiple skyboxes could also be an issue, if anyone uses them.

I like the whole idea though, just trying to help avoid any potential pitfalls.

in The Standard "Zombie Eating" S Post #260816
Okay, I just tried this, and really it's not as hard as you think at all. You don't need to set the animation for him to stand up, the game will play the animation automatically when you damage the zombie.

These are all the custom settings for my scripted_sequence:

Name: eatersofthedead
Target Monster: zombie
Idle Animation: eatbody
Move to Position: Instantaneous (could be anything for you)
Flags: Repeatable

And for the zombie:

Name: Zombie
Flags: None

That's it. Unless the animation you chose for the zombie to stand up is somehow different than the default animation, this way I did it works great. The setup takes a total of three entities including the zombie, the scripted_sequence, and the trigger_auto to trigger the sequence when the map starts. and I can't even remember if scripted_sequences need to be triggered if they're unnamed.

In any case, gameplay should supersede graphics, so I'd at least make a rough creation of your proposed layout with brushes before spending hours on your displacements.

Mind you, I'm a Goldsource mapper, but the the same applies no matter what engine you're working with. Form always follows function, unless of course the function is the form... :\

in sky Post #260705
If you made a big box around your map like that, wouldn't you have to set the view distance incredibly far in hammer, which would kill your 3D view framerate?

Anyway, you can't just put the box anywhere. You'd have to be certain that the box is centered on your camera position in Hammer, because it's not moving with you like in-game. You'll just have to keep on repositioning it.

Oh, and last time I made a skybox I used Skypaint to configure it correctly. It's really weird though, because no matter how hard I tried, I could always see the seems where the images met up. I guess all the images have to be fisheyed or something.

My 24" LCD looks better than any CRT I've used
Yeah, my Trinitron is only refreshing because it's got a different feel to it. It's not as crisp as my LCD, but I feel like it's got deeper, clearer colors.

....It's also starting to get a vague flicker, but that's what you get for five bucks at a thrift store.

As for presents, I already posted this in my journal, but it was mostly random little tools (not much happening in the land of computers for me). My dad got me this nice power sander that I had told him I needed for my truck, but decided against later. I took that back, got a nifty little testing guage, and pocketed twenty something. My mom said I could order a new mouse and she'd pay for it within reason.

I kinda don't care about christmas at all anymore, think it's kinda silly.

"Get used to it" might have been the wrong thing to say. All I meant was, guns or no guns, we're already being controlled by our government, but you'd have to be stupid to charge into the White House guns blazing or some shit. You just can't solve problems that way anymore, which kind of defeats the purpose of the second amendment in the first place.

Not that I'm against gun ownership, I've already said I think certain people can deal with them just fine. I just think defending gun ownership by suggesting that we can protect our constitution with them is a ridiculously outdated idea.

in Kid kills parents over Halo 3 Post #260597
Also, gun ownership is a guaranteed right no less protected than freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the right to vote. Also, we are granted the right to overthrow our government should it violate those rights, and replace it with a new one that will protect them. Without the right to bear arms, we are at the mercy of our government when it should be the other way around.
Blitz, come on, be realistic here. There's pretty much no way the citizens of the United States could ever hope to overthrow our government if the need arose. And it certainly wouldn't be with GUNS of all things, it would have to be with politics. The idea that you could somehow defend your rights with a gun in this day and age is absurdity. A situation in which this would occur is even more unlikely, since any political change in the direction of this country is so long and drawn out these days it's nearly undetectable. You can't change it with a weapon. There's no evil enemy to overthrow anymore.

America already is at the mercy of its government. Get used to it.
