This debate is now becoming 'what constitutes a life', which a bloody internet forum is not going to solve.

Dont mess with time, thats a no brainer.

You can still have an opinion on something even if it has not affected you directly, you could have found it an interesting topic and researched it. Thats like saying a soldier is more knowledgeable about the conflict in iraq because he is there, thats just one perspective and one based on their experiences.

The age old debate, this forum is the final battlefield. Discuss. If you dare.

I say its a biscuit, just because its called a cake doesnt meant it is one. It doesnt coming in individual wrapping and is the same size as a typical biscuit, it also has the low density of biscuit.

my point was that calling place names in the UK stupid is a fallacy because you get the same nonsense (quite literally the same names) in america too!

I saw more similar names than 'new' out west I agree, if you want to know my route and have a space minute or 5 hours, heres the log

I like completely opinionated debates, they dont accomplish anything.

So anyway, in my opinion, abortions for some, miniature american flags for others!

If you heard of a woman who got an abortion because the doctor told her the child would be retarded when it was born, surely you'd see something wrong with that, yeah?
We clearly aren't going to come to much common ground on such a fundamental topic about life and freedoms, but I would obviously agree that if it is done for reasons of the childs livelihood it requires very VERY careful thought, there is little to no excuse for an abortion if the parents dont think they can cope with a child with mental defficiences. However, if the child were to encounter medical difficulties and would not live to see its first month it is an argument against this.
Then why is it not wrong in other cases? Rape victims can opt for adoption, get some welfare money or something while they are pregnant to help them with it.
Imagine getting raped by a man, you dont win your case in court, you are heartbroken. You then find out you are forced to have that mans child for gods sake!

On Abortions: I think that as soon as it has its own DNA, it is a new organism.
Thats a good point, as it takes a little while for the eggs to be fertilised the woman who gets raped has a little while to take the pill/seek advice before its murder.
Condoms and pulling out and all that are fine IMO, but my church is against even that for some reason. unsure - :
I thought the vatican was in a massive uproar at the moment because the nazi (lolz) pope is trying to get that ban reversed

I can understand your point that the feotus/cells/whatever will most likely eventually become a life, something I think is the most precious and important thing in the world not to be taken lightly. But again I also believe in personal freedoms as being a standpoint of a persons life and removing a womans ability to control her own body upto a certain extent seriously erodes those personal freedoms. There are so many mitigating circumstances from rape to endangerment of the woman that its somethign that should never be banned, if its used as more than just a last resort then it starts to get a little iffy, but i'm not a woman so I can't appreciate it obviously.

No one thinks war is a good thing so, you can pretty much assume that war is bad.
bush, zing

there is such a thing as a 'just' war, albiet I dont think democracyfying a country is a just reason, it all depends on how you define war though. Engaging the axis in the world wars was obviously necessary and the outcome of it was positive compared to what could have happened otherwise.

I dont get your logic here, a fission plant produces a HUGE amount of energy so the fact its only 1% efficient means fuck all surely? Nuclear is considerably 'cleaner' than any co2 producing plant, the main byproduct is incredibly dangerous but it wont cause global warming. You can state fusion as 'the future' but without a stable way of producing a reaction its more sensible to think of what we can do now.

Please dont mention that film when talking about the environment, that was one of the worst crimes against cinemetography, even pearl harbour has nothing on that 'film'.

christ for the misinformed madcow, a nuclear powerplant does not explode in a 'nuclear explosion' like someome dropped an h-bomb in the middle of Prypiat, what happened was a fubarred test caused all the control rods (what regulate the reactors, er, reaction) to become stuck and inoperable, so the reaction increased exponentially till the reactor blew its top off in a steam explosion, this released the radioactive contaminents into the air as a massive jet of steam and the wind carried them over most of europe. Pryapit was not evacuated before it happened as the events leading to the explosion were within a few minutes iirc, the men were taken out the town and used to cleanup the mess, leading to horrendous radiation injuries/fatalities. Everyone else was evacuated by the KGB and the town was left desolate.

Nuclear plants are considerably safer than they were back then and I see them as the only real way of providing energy for future generations, you couldn't cover the UK in enough wind farms to compete with the kind of energy nuclear plants can provide. France gets most of its energy from nuclear fission and it hasnt blown up in a while. The main drawback is, as mentioned, nuclear waste, its nasty stuff and the only real way to deal with it is to bury it underground and forget about it, designing the grave they are put in to last for some 100,000 years.

that isnt natural selection, natural selection is due to elements of a species being more compatible with their environment because of random but beneficial genetic mutation

stop using terms like 'debt to society' and 'survival of the fittest' when they dont literally mean that, surely if a prisoner is rehabilitated and thrown into the deepend with no money, no home, no nothing (omg define nothing!1) they are just as likely to re-offend than before?
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-04 10:34:02 UTC
in Dunce Americans Post #178376
surely the point of giving prisoners a wage is to a) allow them to be able to support themselves when 'rehabilitated' and b) to encourage them to do said work without having to resort to 'forcing' them
