My cousins quake2 clan tag was [RUF] back in the day when i was around 5 years old. Never though about it until ruf3st came to mind, obviously influenced by the tag and i still use it from time to time. Years later I dropped the "3st" and added some e's later on, so it became rufee. A new "version" drops some extra letters and we get r f e

quake|roach
quake - hl is built upon a quake engine hence quake here.
roach - is his way of saying that you are kind of addicted to it, same as a roach would never leave a constant food supply.

So you want to make hacks huh ?
Try sniffing net packets, but i don't think that will get you anywhere the client probably doesn't store all the players info in memory. If you dont prefer realtime data then you can try looking into a demo, though the problem is that non-hltv demos are 1 player's perspective.

Why don't you just send logs from the server to your program for analyzing ? Its very simple and you can get a basic script going in half an hour :) its how most web based stats trackers work (hlstatsx, psychostats etc...)

others says its junk you know?
Its not junk, you just have to lower your standards (still dont get it why is standard spelled with a "d" instead of "t"), if a person has never played cs/hl then they wont get it anyway. The gs engine is probably the best way to train new mappers just because of how easy to start with it is. If you want to develop for it - develop, but what I can say is that with that much coding put in it they would have probably made a better engine themselves rather than wasting time putting work into this one, if all you need is a step up from gs just use source, why bother putting something in the middle ?

Im just rambling right now anyway, short version: want better graphics and that old feel of quake legacy go source, its a bit steeper learning curve due to people expecting gold from everything. Else just stay with gs and lets face it you're old then.

The wheel

Probably one of the most meaningful inventions of man kind, the rubber variant of it is the most popular one being utilized in cars, bicycles, you name it. The best use for a wheel is that it lets you ride your bicycle and crash into stuff at high speed.

If SSD's didn't have that annoying "die after x number of writes" i would have one. When i think about it an ssd with what i would use it for would die in 5-6 years, if you're lucky a HDD will last forever.

Id love to have an SSD but i don't have spare cash for that :(

About the blender maya topic: 3ds/maya are a billion times better than what you get for free, although most of that is features that if you are not a advanced modeller wont use anyway. I think Blender is sh*t, launched it, played with it, then never used it again, but that's just my opinion. For me its really down to the feel of the interface and how close it is to hammer, 3ds looks ok, but to get what you want you have to use a strange menu to apply a modification to an object. Softimage (XSI if youre old) fits my needs perfectly, an easy to work with interface, not overloaded with useless features. Never tried Maya though, wonder how that goes. Anyway i don't do much modelling. Just thoughts about some of the options.

Gameplay is absurd: i never turned off always run, grunts are OVERPOWERED, guns are inaccurate except for the 357 :). I am frustrated from replaying ambushes until i don't die. Practically everything apart from the design (levels, textures, sounds...) sucks.

Undo some steps back, it should not hang for no reason. Maybe you put in some complex geometry and it needs time to finish rendering.

The compiler needs to know where the .wad's are, the .map file tells them. If your hammer is misconfigured wrong paths will be written to the .map and hence the purple/black squares. You can just strip the paths to the .wad and just copy them to where hlbsp... resides, or fix your hammer.

Ok so im messing with opengl with no luck (not a great coder), anyway i cant help but notice that it doesnt give me much control on what i would like to do, the "scene" feels like its the opposite of a normal map - world moves around you not you around... So how does HL's renderer work, how can it use opengl or d3d or software w/o being forced to one or the other ?
Im really frustrated about this. Oh and yeah you are free to discus any rendering thing here.

I have a gtx525m and im not complaining. Go for more CPU power, 2 cores suck (threads dont make a huge difference).

Asus all the way here. Had the same dilemma when i bought mine should i get better graphics or a better cpu or wait till ivy-bridge comes out.
You could get a cheaper one if you dont plan on only gaming, any of those can run BF3 no prob.
Dont be tempted by SSD upgrades or upgrades in general, 99% of the time this will never happen.
17" is a lot, think about that if you are going to carry it around a lot, i dont even consider 17" to be a laptop because its huge.

The mistake i made was that i dont really need a laptop now im broke.
And yes go for more CPU power.
