1. Can you save in the .MAP format? If not, use hlfix, if only to produce the .MAP and not for its other features;

2. Do you mean mod? Read the readme. All you need to do, if it's in the standard form, is extract it to, i.e., C:SierraHalf-Life. If not, then as I said, read the readme. That's where it gets its name;

3. You'll need to use Zoner's tools, and then, as Kasperg advised, read that tutorial.

Make sure the format's right, I think it should be 11,025kHz 8-bit mono. Compare them with the originals in the PAK.

22,050kHz will play, but lip-synching won't work. That's how I remember it, at least.

You might have trouble if you're trying to use an Atari gamepad or the Asteroids machine joystick, but any AT-or-newer one should be adaptable. Does your PC have none of the legacy ports?

There's a mod for HL that'll do proper two-foot shader shadows. It's available here. Works best on nVidia cards though.
