How would you set up a texture to emit 3 different colors/light continously... (ie. red, blue, green, red, blue green). Would I just be putting each color code after another, or am I triggering it somehow?

Okay, I'll try that right now, also I added the extra 1 pixel layer above the walls because people could jump up and sit ontop of it..

would changing them to clip brushs work?

@tetsu0: no the light is well spaced from any brush.

EDIT: So far its not working... :

Ok, I've tried both light_spot and environment with a pitch of -60 (I originally had -90, so it was always facing down) and I'm still not getting any shadow. I have no idea how to make a map full bright... I have no leaks, and here is my compile log:

I've almost done my map, and I have one final touch I'd like to add to it. I'm trying to get it so that my light creates shadow effects behind objects. During the construction of my map, I'm almost positive that it use to create shadow effects behind brushs, but now it just lights up the entire map. In odd corners, completely blocked by the light, the area is still bright. I'm using a light_spot, set to 'is sky'.

Any help please on how to do this would be appriciated.

Just a guess....

do you have a over-sized skybox?

I don't know how to put this but... having an oversized room(anykind of large area, yes including the skybox) without blocking the point of view (ie. halls, objects to fill the area), will cause a great increase in lag and compile times.

YAY! Fixed it.

I went in and manually copied all 550 objects :| . The first 3 tries didn't work but for some reason the 4th did??? Oh well... thank you all for your ideas/help. :)

I've gone through almost all of my brushs, and still I keep getting the problem. I doubt 1 brush could cause over 200 brushs outside world. My entire map is mostly made out of sqaures/rectangles.

My only guess is it has something to do with half of my map which was lost this morning (turned invisible or is hiding on me??)? First time I turned Hammer on this morning, it was jacked up, and when I loaded my map it was completely destroyed.

If anyone knows how to fix a problem like this, your help would be appriciated, thanks.

The problem is that all the objects listed, don't exist. When I go to 'Check for Problems' I get every single brush listed in the compile log(which is about 200). When I go-to problem, every single one is a brush that doesn't exist. So I Fix them all (delete) and compile. The problem however comes back right after. No matter how many times I delete, the non-existint brushs keep coming back, and Hammer is reading them as all brushs that are out-side world.

Any help? :

Nope, I've compiled it at least 100 times.

I don't know what happened, but everything was fine. I lost half of my map this morning (I have no idea why), and I just re-made all of it. All the objects I had to re-place were blocks, and I never had to do anything to them but simply just change some textures.

Just yesterday, I saved my map and shut down for the night. When I opened Hammer this morning, my Options/Set-Up was completely blank and when I finally finished setting it back up, I loaded my map, and only 1/2 of it was there (about 1/2).

So I spent an hour or so putting everything back together :cry: , and when I finally got it ready to compile, my log reads this:

The set up:

(Dripping water effect) Trigger_auto triggers a multi_manager, which then triggers an env_blood.
Then when someone presses a button (thus creating another effect), the button kills the multi_manager for the rest of the round (thus stopping the env_blood).

Now the problem is, I only want the manager to be killed for the rest of 'that' round, but come back the next, and then have the same effect (killed by a button). Is there anyway I can do this/how?
(do I need to kill a different entity/trigger and/or use a different set-up?)

Okay, now another question (which will probably turn out very simple, but still...). I'm setting it so that multi_manager will keep on running, until a button is pressed, thus killing the manager. Now the problem is... I only want the manager to be killed for the rest of that round, and to come back the next round. Is there anyway I can do this?

Hopefully this will be my last problem for today...

I'm trying to have a button, trigger a multi_manager which will set off a message (at 0.1), and a water rising (at 0.2).

Button - Target: Drown
Multi_manager - Name: Drown
- message 0.1
- backwash 0.2
Water - Name: backwash
Text - Name: message

Now whenever I press the button, the water rises, however the message doesn't go off... help would be appriciated, thanks.

Also, is there anyway my func_button can target/set-off 2 things... IMO it'd be a lot easier.

Yes, I know this topic has been brought up and explained, but all links on TWHL (that I've browsed through), are out-of-date and I still havn't been able to find a tutorial or any explaination exactly how to do this.

My map (a small box for now).... has a button, when pressed triggers a message, that then triggers (what I hope to be) rising water. (BTW do I need a multi_manager for this???)

Before the button is pressed, there is already small pool of water on the floor. When the water rises, does its size already have to be made, or can the small pool of water be streched to the top of the box?
Also I've tried using func_door/train/water, messed with their attributes/flags, used path_corners, but I've still been unable to get rising water.

Any help on how to do this would be appriciated. Thanks! :)

Yes, under multi manager all you have to do is (w/o smart edit) target the ambience(s) (key) and then give it a specific time (value).

This will only work though if you want them to be played at a specific time (I think)... if you want them to be triggered, the options above are the answer.

Are you triggering them by a button or just when they enter an area?

If its a button just use a func_button that targets the ambience. The button can have a reset time (if you want).

If its an area, create an invisible brush covering the entire area you want the player to be when the sound is played. Tie the brush to a trigger_multiple (targetting the ambience). The trigger multiple can be reset (if you want the sound to be played over again), with a time limit.

I'm assuming your usuing multiple sounds. Also, multi manager is an option. It gets confusing for me though so I just stick to the basic stuff.

Okay, just one last question.... does the new half-lifex3.fgd (or whatever its called), work for Counter-Strike 1.6 too? Because I can't seem to find a .fgd file specifically for CS with the game_ entities.

I found the problem, for some reason I forgot to name the env_message. Also the env_message has a sound tab where you can upload the sound you want. But now the problem is, when I enter the box, it plays the sound, however the message doesn't appear?

EDIT: Oh I see, env_message only uploads the file. game_text eh? Do I download it off the internet? I don't have it on my hammer????? (3.5 w/ ZHLT).

Oh not only that, but I don't have any of the game_ entities in my list. I have to go, will be on tomorrow, thanks in advanced.

Okay, I'm trying to trigger a message to appear on screen, when a player walks through the center of the map (over a bridge). I have the area covered in a trigger_multiple. I have the target set to 'message1' which is a env_message entity, and includes a sentence under 'message'. (also added a little sound for fun). Now however, when I test the map, and walk through the trigger, nothing happens. Any help on how to fix this would be appriciated, thanks :)

Just had the same problem, all I did was restart Hammer 3 times and its working fine now... I also noticed that when you click on an object (thats highlighted already), it'll move the object where you click.

Nooo, its lagging still. I'm getting 4 fps. I enclosed everything, and its still not working. Anyone know how to fix this?

Can anyone else please help, this makes absolutly no sense...

EDIT: OH MY LORD I GOT IT!!!!!! ......... found out it was a leak in the left river brush... :D

Ok, I just updated it, and also moved it to Problem Maps, the textures came from cz_druglab from Deleted Scenes (also included).

Edit: Oh wait 1 minute...

Edit 2: I can't include the cz_druglab.wad, you should have them if you have CZ:Deleted Scenes. The file is too big.

Oh is the brush just called 'null'? Sorry, first time having to do something like this.

BTW, the map is already uploaded in completed maps (i thought i had it completed a while back) I found out I had some lag problems so I'm kind of fixing up some stuff in it, so its kinda sloppy right now.

Well its not just a blue texture, its a forest texture of trees and the top of it is blue to to give the trees their actual shape so their not just square. (its all one texture) And above that is the clip texture which is the invisible enclosure. BTW do I need this or will 'sky' block off player movement for me?

I tried that, I have a box shaped map, with the top open. About 3/4ths up the walls of the map, the texture is {blue, and is invisible. So I took the sky brush and completely surround the walls and top (making sure they were touching the walls), and removed the bottom of the sky box (no point because un-seeable). I loaded the map and had EXTREME lag. So I read the tutorial about saying to move texture 1 pixel off, to stop the VIS (or whatever) from choping the texture into several pieces thus increasing r_speeds. So instead I moved the sky box walls, 1 pixel off of my map walls and put a 1 pixel wide little close off at the bottom, making sure it was enclosed, and having all but 1 pixel touching the walls. Once again I got extreme lag. My original set up had the sky box way out, and included a bottom. The lag was very low (still had some from things like touching brushs, no func_walls, etc.). Wouldn't bringing the sky box in closer reduce r_speeds, instead of increasing them?

In other words, I'm having less lag while having my sky box 150-200+ pixels off of my map walls, and including a bottom. Then I am bringing it super close and enclosing it off my walls.

Alright, reading the r_speeds tutorial, I'm currently trying to remove the bottom of my sky box (un-seeable because of floor) and making the edges and top 1 pixel off of the clip texture + walls. Before I had a box (sky) around my entire map about 120 pixel away from everything. Wouldn't making the sky farther away create more lag then closer???

Also another quick question... I thought sky boxes couldn't be used as invisible walls (like the clip texture). Is this true?

No I read the tutorial and got most of it, I just didnt know if music needed to be triggered or not. :P

And now a new problem

I want the music to loop, and I have the flag box "Is NOT Looped" unchecked. I run the map and the music doesn't loop. So then I check the box and run the map, trying to see if maybe it was an error or something and checking it will make it loop, and It doesn't even play.??? :furious: :confused:

Edit: Console error reads (when I check "Is NOT Looped"): WARNING! aim_riverbank/forest/aim_riverbank_forest01.wav is causing runtime sample conversion!

Any help would be EXTREMLY appriciated.

Thank you, I was wondering if that was the problem because it wouldn't play on start up. I found out that the sound file was .wmp (or whatever the Windows Media Player file is), instead of .wav, so it wasn't locating the file, hehe.

Just a few questions about using ambient_generic.

I'm using a jungle music/background type of thing for my map. I have it set up right (based on the tutorial), but I'm a little confused about the trigger part.

My map: http://twhl.co.za/mapvault_map.php?id=4588, is open, and I want the music to start as soon as they enter the map (start by itself?). I'm also having it loop so it doesn't need to be triggered again.

Do I need to trigger this? If yes:...

I'm sorry I didnt explain. I mean if you are using a custom sky texture, can someone else (who might not have the textures), see them in game. 1. Yes or No. and 2. If they don't, is there anyway to add them to your compiling, like textures/wads so they dont have to go out and download them?

Just a few questions...

How do you include a custom model into a map, if theres a variety of ways (such as include textures), if you wouldn't mind please explain them all. I'm hoping including a model can save me here (I've been spending hours trying to make trees/etc :confused: and it just hasnt worked). I'm an average mapper, but this is my first time using a model, any help on how to do this would be very apreciated.
