agreed, maybe we can do this compo again sometime and base judging almost purely on gameplay and layout (or creative use of brushes in general).

agree with pb, i think this shouldn't have been made a visual compo, because being creative with gameplay and sizable layouts would have produced much nicer results..

edit: i should add that i am pleased by the number of entries/participants and quite honestly just really happy that we're having another competition again! this shit keeps the community alive.

I don't think Crysis 2 is a port really, it's just a game that has been designed across all three platforms with consoles in mind. I will admit though that Crytek have made a number of poor decisions regarding graphics options, mouse acceleration and all-round disregard for elitist PC faggots who demand DX11 because it's going to make everything ~amazing.

All I know know is I'm enjoying the shit out of it atm. Single player is fairly true to Crysis and Warhead, which is surprising given the dramatic change in environment. Online is just mindless fun, good to just jump in and enjoy for half an hour or so.

Something about the game is just really satisfying...

edit: for graphics options, take a look at this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1807934

for the love of god, all of these ideas will be full compos and will all happen eventually i'm sure. these two are taking precedence because they require absolute minimum preparation, just a set of rules that needs to be written up.

i also like the brush limit but maybe 20 is a bit too few for TWHL. the folks on mapcore are pretty serious level designers (most have proper jobs as developers), i'm thinking 25 or 30 would be better off.

any reason why these can't be proper competitions? surely all we need is someone to write out some rules. i don't know how the competition system works for TWHL but i honestly think there'll be a better turnout if it were a proper compo.

i don't think these perfectly good ideas should go to waste on a mini compo where winners aren't going to be properly recognised.

don't understand the point of mini compos, i'm fairly sure the process of addition of a proper compo is fairly easy once a brief is written up and a deadline given.

just so you guys can get a feel of what kind of submissions these competitions produce, here are those compos from mapcore i mentioned:

1024³ challenge
20 brush challenge

to push creativity even further, some level of gameplay was made mandatory. so you can't just make an empty room or something without losing serious points during judging.

some really clever and inspiring submissions tbh.

hasn't happened yet because it takes time to put a texture pack together.

a couple months back i was chatting with the aussie mods about potential compo ideas. we discussed the idea of short restriction-based competitions. pretty much all of our compos are really open ended and people always aim too high and end up submitting half assed and unfinished entries (or don't submit at all).

the texture pack compo is a clever one. it would be difficult to make a huge mod with a limited amount of textures whilst still keeping things interesting. this encourages smaller, finishable and hopefully more polished entries.

other competition ideas i raised were based on the little competitions going on at mapcore. not long ago there was a 20-brush based compo which produced some really interesting results. more recently there was a competition where entries were limited to a 1024³ unit playable area.

these restriction based compos make creating an entry fairly easy and can be done in as little as a couple hours. i mean how long does it take to make 20 brushes?

but by far the best part about these restrictions is that they promote and reward creativity. isn't that the whole idea of mapping?

I don't know about you guys, but I do almost 30 hours of uni a week and live over an hour away from campus. That's 5 days a week of average 6 hour days + 2 hours of travel a day. Then there's the work that needs to be done at home in order to pass. I sure as hell don't have a lot of spare time, and not many people are willing to hire a 20 year old who can only work weekends. I do have a job (albeit extremely casual and very much the textbook definition of seasonal income) but I do have a hard time justifying spending my very limited amount of disposable income on artificially overpriced games.

That being said, I do own 70+ games on Steam and 80% of the titles I've pirated in recented years I've gone on to buy on special on Steam (including Far Cry 2 unfortunately). The only ones I don't buy are those whose price has been jacked up 300% by publishers simply because of the country that I live in. I'm looking at you Activision and EA.

Recently pirated games which I will NOT be buying are COD blops ($90USD on Steam), FIFA 11 (own on console anyway), NFS Hot Pursuit (regionally priced and a shit game to boot, disappointed with Criterion).

Games that were originally pirated that I went on to buy include Borderlands, Dirt 2 (possibly my favourite racing game ever), Mirror's Edge, and Psychonauts (bought as soon as it was available in Australia).

idk, I think a lot of you older guys have forgotten just how hard it is to be a struggling student. I'm certainly not trying to condone piracy, but I can certainly understand why some (I stress SOME) people do it.

Trapt keeps reappearing because in each of your posts is some wry comment about why you're better than me and how I have such a huge problem with you.

I've had enough of your shit. Just post your mod on the map vault and leave me alone. Just be prepared that not everyone is going to love your mod, and don't cry (or at least have a bucket handy) when people voice their concerns.

I will not be returning to this thread. Please make less of a fuss when you return in another two years to post The Citizen 3.

So you're saying that you'll listen to criticisms from someone who did enjoy the mod but not from someone who didn't? I honestly don't know what point you're trying to make here.

Since you still think I'm jealous and bitter, let me put this out there for you:
I don't care for The Citizen.
I don't care for you.
Not enjoying your mod did not make me jealous that you released a mod.
You're not the only one who has released a mod.
I have no problem with you.
You have a problem with me.
I offered criticism.
You ignored it.
You claimed it was fine because others enjoyed it.
This is not how game design works.

I don't care if you didn't download Dystopia. Many didn't. Also many did. Many people didn't enjoy it. Many people did.

I downloaded The Citizen. I didn't enjoy it.

Hopefully these short sharp sentences will let this finally sink into your thick skull after two long years.

Oh yes, and I'm the arrogant one...
And please, quote one past hysterical response from me. You might find something, but so far all you do is hide behind the idea that I replied hysterically. I coul do the same and say all you ever did in your feedback was cry.
Oh yes, I must be arrogant because I claim I know what I'm talking about. Does almost 20 years of video gaming not qualify me as someone who knows what they're talking about? This has nothing to do with arrogance.

Also, I'm not going digging through ancient posts to find your responses. They're pretty well documented anyway.
Crap! I can make much more polished and better-lit maps than these guys, I understand Valve's gameflow ideas better than they do (Probably true) but somehow it's THEM who have released a mod that some (or quite a lot of, actually) of people are enjoying even with its flaws. If I can't reach them, I must make them fall somehow.
Not sure if this is directed at me or penguinboy (or anyone for that matter) but I couldn't help but laugh. I MUST MAKE THEM FALL BECAUSE I DIDN'T ENJOY THEIR MOD!!!!!!!! You're not the only one here who has contributed to a popular mod.

Get over over yourself.

Also, feel free to post TC2 in the map vault. I myself will not be playing or downloading it, especially after watching Hunter's review. I'm sure this suits us both.

not so much historic on its own, but it is an iconic area of an area in its current state due to perhaps one of the biggest historical events in recent history.

Wasn't sure whether to expect a music DVD or a documentary on Iceland when I first started watching it. Turns out it is both neither and both. Totally recommended to any Sigur R?s fans out there (though you've probably already seen it) and even to those who have never heard of them.
