in new mapping software? Post #306455
We're accustomed to compiling, but better construction tools would be fantastic. Better snaps like to edge, vertex, midpoint, face, etc. besides just the grid. The ability to select two faces and extrude a brush that connects them together. Almost more like modeling tools but for level design.

Neither............

It was the tastes of the person that is characterized in the scene. I was oblivious to the silhouette indie fad.

If I really work on it, I could replace the black graphics with actual stuff. I just thought black felt like ink on parchment paper.

in SMJ question... Post #305943
As many of you know, I'm developing on Super Matt Jordan and I've hit a really bad indecision.

It's kinda important because it deals with the player's health.

As it stands, the player has lives (health actually) and starts with 40. He can lose any amount of health from 1 to probably no higher than 5. The player also whores coins gathered from the many things he does. Coins are in unlimited supply to the player as enemies will drop them. The player can buy life from the town's shop.

Its a weird hybrid setup because its in between being Mario-style lives, acting more like "Hits" and actual RPG stat style HP. As it is right now anyway.

Also, there is no maximum. With enough money, the player can buy 999999999 lives.

Lives can be bought like so:
10 lives for 100 coins.
20 lives for 175 coins
30 lives for 250 coins.

Things to consider is the style of the game. It is a platformer-shooter (aka Run & Gun). The player gets hit a lot. The difficulty is kinda high by default because of the features. It's not remotely an RPG game so there are no experience points or leveling. There are many pickups already in the game and I like hiding them. I DO have 1 spot left on the Continue Game screen do display the number of life pickups since I've centralized the save point.

So the questions that remain:
1] Should there be a maximum for the lives?
2] Should the maximum be increased by pickups?
3] How high should the maximum go with all pickups obtained?
4] How susceptible to grinding for lives are you?
5] Would you grind for lives often?
6] If the system was set to a full HP system, How do you think the system should change?

Also, I value this community's say on stuff. You guys play a lot more games than I do and there might be something I'm missing.

If you have any question or suggestions, let me know.

in Node size 64 ... increasing wpolys? Post #305942
I've noticed that too and I can't explain it. I use nodesize 128, and it seems to me to do justice. I don't think it cuts up the map, and I can't explain why it is higher in some cases. This is my understanding of nodes and node sizes.
User posted image
I may be wrong though.

keep in mind that the default chop size is set to 240. i haven't actually tried 240 as a node size, and I wonder if it matches up if it would actually provide better or more accurate results. The chop is also scalable with texture scales. Which is why a large wall can be 12 wpoly and not 2 like anything smaller than 240, but the same wall with a scaled up texture can be 2. You can make enormous rooms if you scale the textures up. (See Alpestrine, or CP Sancefar) Changing the chop size crashes almost everytime so never change it, its an engine thing.

Stencyl.

It's fairly new and has a horse-fuck ton of glitches. Its ridiculously powerful for what it does. It outputs a flash file that is powered by the Flixel engine and supports iOs platforms and smart phones with touch capabilities. Its fun to dork around in. The visual script editing is candy to me and Grim and I have shared some fun late-night coding frustrations together. There is a version that can be purchased that up to date with the glitch fixes. So far I haven't found anything game-stopping, just feature stopping which with some clever scripting, I fixed manually.

You don't have to do 8bit stuff, I just chose to because I love 8bit. It supports any resolution.

Wubsite.

Edit: crashed my desktop computer. Fuck it, not sharing the love.

Anyway, I did manage to play it some. The direction changing is bothersome since i want to believe that i am always facing one direction. also, i also believed that each step sound of the player was stepping one tile and I couldn't figure out if that was true, or how big something was or how far I've gone.

in Valve Employee Handbook Post #305670
Wow. Valve sounds like a very large group of talented grown-up kids who just decided to coordinate enough to make games. I bet those two words get thrown around a lot, that "what if" that comes before random golden ideas.

They seem like they have an environment for maximum creative output. I bet there's a ton less pressure and stress working there.
They need to handle to characters really carefully following the closing scene
I'm almost done reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Everything in those books is extremely brutal on the characters and personally some of the most critical plot, character, and world development I've ever come to know. If valve pulls some serious King-level genius, they have nothing to worry about. The way Portal 2 was written left that twinge in the base of your mind from going through something extraordinarily circumstantial when you finished the game, or even when certain things were discovered about the people, place, or plot involved. The jenonsaisque was definitely there. (or something that makes your mind say "whoa" on a deep subconscious level)

As far as working at valve, I think I'd have to discipline myself to work in an environment like that. I'd need at least a go-to guy in case I get stumped. The idea of no real superiors is an odd concept coming from the traditions my career was raised.

The textures aren't off, the lighting is very low.

the console command for it is:

gl_wirefram #
1: Show wires on surfaces.
2: Show wires on all surfaces including occluded ones.

It only works using OpenGL renderer. Otherwise use r_drawflat 1 and r_draworder 1.

You could have the button reset after 5 seconds or so, but after the first push, switch off it's master which would basically lock it. As the round restarts, the master of the button gets turned on again. Are there triggers for round_start type stuff in cs1.6 fgd?

in Going crazy with hint brushes Post #303697
use any batch compiler, either Nem's or the Compilator, and change the VIS nodesize to 256 or 128. This will result in more frequent checks for opimizing than the default 1024 setting and will result in lower poly counts. The price is obviously a longer compile time. This works better than any hint or skip brush set up.

A Vis Node is an area that when the player enters it, it quickly loads and unloads what is visible from that area. A large area means that everything visible from that area must be loaded even if it isn't exactly visible by the player. A smaller area is more precise in this. Any loading/unloading performance issues is a non-existant problem on modern computers.

You will still have to null or bevel unseen edges, and make all of the expected optimizations yourself, but you won't have to worry about hand-placing hint brushes.

This could happen anywhere. Its not like we have the physical presence on the internet to tell ages. The first thing we do is class people by age (then gender oddly enough) then justify any human interactions. You don't have any of those tells on the internet and thus conflicts arise.

However, internet makes people grow up fast. Just go look up |||||||||||||||||||||.

Many times I've run out of clipnodes before running out of anything else. Some people around here may notice my habit of clip-brush cropping and extensive use of non-solid brush entities. I wish there was a brush that made everything inside of it non-solid so it can cover scenic parts of the map and not waste perfectly good collision hulls or brush-entities to at least recreate the effect.

Nifty experiment. I'm an avid fan of bevel since someone exampled what it did, don't plan on changing that.

in How did you start mapping? Post #302936
~What made you start mapping in the first place?
Found Worldcraft on my HL CD when I got it a long time ago in early 2004. After a few months messing around going from only the included help files, I randomly searched the internet and found TWHL.

~What was your first map?
Gyradell, a derelict overground nature versus structures type theme. Originally the textures were randomly generated from the Corel Photopaint Texture Generator. Still a useful tool, though I don't use it anymore.

~Where did you get inspiration for your first map?
I lived in a historic town and plants grew on everything anyway. Always admired the tenacity of nature.

~To who did you show it & how did they react?
I showed my maps to a friend, who in turn would play through the single 1-map HLSP scenarios. I also managed to make CS maps shortly after learning to map and brought them to a LAN Cafe at the local mall where a dozen people jammed out on them. Some were better than others, most were small, unrefined, and experimental. I made 9 maps in a week and we played them all.

~Your advace to future mappers/current mappers?
It can only get harder from here. Never forget to have fun.
