You probably set it up wrong - Hammer can't find the location or file. Double-check all your configurations, so they match actual files - ie map directories and stuff.
If not, it might be because the path is dodgy or they're on different partitions. Hammer should always be on the same partition as Steam/Half-life.

FF is really anal about CSS. It has to be pretty much perfect or it wont display it right.Not really, Opera is worse in that sense. What's annoying is that IE displays incorrect CSS as if it's proper.
Urbanebula: align="center" is pretty much deprecated, use CSS for aligning instead.
1280x960 at 30 KB without any hugely noticeable loss in quality. Photoshop's Save for Web feature is decent.
Resizing desktop images is utterly stupid. Just use proper compression methods. Hell, saving pictures in Mspaint works quite well. Use Xat's image optimizer if you really feel like it, I won't stop you.
