Texture lighting greiko... you need texture lighting severely.

Also experiment with making door frames between rooms. It helps to break up the map into different sections, and then you can have different ceiling heights and stuff too.

Why must I impose my opinion on people? Are you serious? That's all anybody else is doing in this thread... hell, on this site. Practically on any internet forum at all. You're imposing your opinion on me when you say nobody cares. I don't tell you to shut the fuck up then, so why do you? If you don't agree with what I'm saying, state otherwise, and state YOUR opinion, but don't tell anybody to be quiet because you're feeling inferior or something. That's your problem, not mine.

I don't think it should be allowed for people to only vote for one thing, and nothing else. If you think about it, it really offsets the vote with people doing that, because it neglects any maps that might be in, say, second place from getting any points at all! I think the point system would be fine if you were required to vote for five and no less than five, but as it is it seems a bit unfair to me.

People who like muscle cars are compensating.
Well then, let's just go ahead and say anyone who drives a fast vehicle (including bikes) is compensating then, eh? Seems fair enough to me.
I drive a BMW. It's a European car.
You drive a German car. The way I see it, there's enough distinction between the cars built in different parts of Europe that they should be classified as such. But that's just me...and most people...and most of the automotive community.

in scripted_sequences acting up Post #241486
This is driving me mad, so I just decided to make a thread about it, even though it's a rather small problem.

My scientist absolutely refuses to respond to any scripted_sequences that are outside of his view. Even if they're just around a tiny corner, 128 units away. At first I just thought, oh, it's quite a walk, maybe they aren't designed to move that far on their own...but then I put a different scripted_sequence at every frickin' corner, and he still can't walk the whole way to the place I want him to walk to. I have a sufficient network of nodes, maybe even too sufficient, with one placed about every 128 units. I have another map where Barney walks pretty far with nothing but a really rough node layout.

So, is this just a known problem with the AI of monsters, or is this abnormal in any way? Placing a bunch of scripted_sequences doesn't work so well, because the subject will pause every time they hit one. I guess I've never even needed for my monsters to walk this far before, so I've never encountered anything like it.

Also, in the example, I was assuming a situation where you couldn't do anything BUT add or subtract. To make my point clearer. I was talking about VB compared to C++ though, not mapping.

It has to do with engine power in the sense that it can deliver a near optimal air-fuel ratio, and with this the engine will perform better. And as I said before, it also delivers faster response times that couldn't be achieved with carburetion. I don't know what you consider engine power to be, but it's just one thing in a long chain of devices that contribute to it. To say it has nothing to do with it is ridiculous.

The only advantage of Fuel injected versus Carburetor is a cold start, and it's harder to run an electronic System thru a carb.
No... no that's not the only advantage. It's a far more precise fuel delivery system than a carburetor, meaning the engine runs more efficiently, more reliably, has far better throttle response, and can reach its full potential with the correct air-fuel ratio. It can also be quickly tuned and adjusted with a laptop. But that's not to say it would double the power of any car.

Also, American cars simply can't turn well, period. Even I admit that. All our sports cars use dated suspension systems, and have trouble maneuvering.

I think Hunter only said that because the author isn't well known in America, and I guess he is in other parts of the world. I don't think there was an underlying message that we're all stupid or something. And, actually, everybody who hadn't heard of him (except Penguinboy) WAS American. ;)

Looks okay from what I can see so far, which honestly isn't much. That concrete trim thing is a little strange if you ask me, and your ceiling texture sucks...I mean, it's a wall texture.

I can't really judge whether the area is too boxy though. I just can't see enough to determine that. The boards certainly need to be rotated or skewed, though.

Keep in mind I can't see the first image you posted. I have a few problems with viewing Imageshack stuff.

well, I know that 256x304 didn't work, but I'll try 256x512.

Edit: Wow. That worked. Which doesn't explain why it wouldn't accept 256x304, which should be valid, but... Thank you so much, ChickenFist! You've saved me, for now.

Now all I should have to do is reset some coordinates in Half-Life's existing hud.txt and it should work!

It may be possible for the engine to handle them, much like it's possible for the engine to handle larger textures than 256x256... but neither Sprite Explorer nor Sprite Wizard would allow me to create anything larger. They both turned back errors.

in Need larger game title image! Post #241171
Thanks for explaining how the coordinates work. The thing is, I know how the edit the current title, which is located in 640hud4/640hud5, but I need to make it recognize two other sprites for the lower portion, and it doesn't seem to want to.
So, to get a bigger starting title image - make the biggest one you can and edit the coordinates to match it.
It's ALREADY the biggest it can be - 256x256. That's why I have to look into this other method that they used in Opposing Force.

I'm thinking that the game is directed to look at certain lines inside hud.txt, and whatever those lines say will be what is displayed, but it has no reason to recognize any additional lines in hud.txt. I don't know where the lines for it to use would be specified. I'm worried that it might be buried in the code somewhere, because I'd personally have no way of changing that stuff myself. I just wouldn't have the knowledge.

But then again, I might be totally wrong about how that all works. It's really just an educated guess, based on my past experiences with these things. All I know is, copying these additional lines...

title_half 640 640hud4 0 226 256 30
title_life 640 640hud5 0 226 220 30
title_opposing 640 640hudof05 0 0 256 32
title_force 640 640hudof06 0 0 256 32

...from the hud.txt used for Opposing Force, and pasting them over those you showed from Half-Life's hud.txt will not work to make 640hudof5 and 640hudof6 be displayed with the title.

Hahahahahahahah... wow... "double the power output"...

Not only are we talking about frivolous things like GPS and seat warmers when we said electronic gadgets, but your point about EFI doubling the output of engines is just way off mark. I mean, we obviously wouldn't be where we are today in terms of efficiency and reliability if we still used carbureted engines, but you know what'll happen if you hook up an oldish Chevy engine with electronic fuel injection? Well, not much, actually. It produces around the same horsepower and torque as the carbureted one will. Slightly more in some cases, but not much. It's engineering that does it, not strapping a bunch of computers onto the engine. And as I said before, that Jaguar the Mustang went against was carbureted anyway, so your point is moot.

I'm just gonna keep this up because I like arguing about cars.

It's a bad idea to make little details like pipes (where you don't see the interior) out of arches, though. It creates way more brushes than is necessary for such a thing. It also solves some clipping problems with curves if the curve is one whole brush instead of multiple ones.
