I don't mind arena combat, as long as it's mixed with some neighbouring rooms and corridors. Just a big arena gets very boring, very fast.

About apex, I don't mind the textures themselves - IMO, one can make some pretty darn cool maps using Half-Life textures - but the way they're combined and lit is appalling. I mean, no offence, but it's just plain ugly, they way some textures are put together. On top of that, all surfaces in the map look flat and boring.

If it doesn't work, you're doing it wrong. Read those 2 tutorials again and do exactly what it says.
If there's something you don't understand, read TWHL's "In The Beginning" tutorials to learn the basics.

Just make a big block outside it and cover it all (including the outside of the sphere) with NULL. Engine won't render them.

How big is the picture in pixels?
If any side is longer than 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 pixels it will not work.

On a side note, what happened to divisible by 16? Can't we have 48, 96, 160, etc. anmore? :(

One unit = one pixel. But seeing as how source uses textures four times larger then their intended area (ie they're scaled down to 0.25), 1 unit = 4 pixels.

Say you want to make a 128x128 wall texture - it's 512x512 in photoshop.

Meh if 56k-ers want to have a theme they can just disable images. Good enough.

Oh, and CSS layouts don't really require more hacks, per se, than table ones. The three big browsers have a tendency to render table layouts differently too, not to mention it's horribly unsemantic.

Resizing it to 75%, and with paint on top of that, makes it all jaggedy.

Vista, pfft. I see no reason to get it at all, except DX10 - and I don't have a DX10 Graphics-card. I'll warez it when someone cracks all the DRM and releases a simple install.

The Pirate Bay is the best torrent tracker site around. Legal threats > all, it makes up for their lack of seeders.
But yeah, scrapetorrent's handy for checking through multiple sites.
