I still have my old computer sitting on my desk. It's a P4 + GeForce 6200/256MB. Its motherboard is old enough not to support SATA2, but it runs Half Life in OpenGL mode just fine (HL DirectX mode sucks badly however, and I never quite understood why)

Question: What's the second check box for? Doesn't it use the cameras you set in the map file?

While I'm at it, what does the third one do? What is is that you call the "viewport splitter"? Do you mean the dimensions of the four individual views?

The only personal objection I have is that everything is too steep, maybe you should have downscaled the world vertically so that coasts looked a bit more natural and the seas weren't so deep. I saw Archie drown three times trying to retrieve stuff he dropped in the water.

Then again, I'm making use of these steep cliffs everywhere.

[edit] should we invite this guy to the server? :P

It always bothered me that you can change the GUI colours in the Adobe suite. It serves no purpose other than making it look non-standard and clash with the OS standard.

I'd much rather see work put into actually useful improvements.

I'm guessing a map spanning 79228162514264337593543950335x79228162514264337593543950335x79228162514264337593543950335 would most likely fit Half Life from beginning to end without a map change several times over.

It would still hit the entity limit pretty fast, though.

I finally pretended I didn't have any homework and visited the server. Spawn looks real nice. I took a bit of the free food, thanks to whoever put it there. I explored a bit but I had very little so for now I'm staying at the Zeratus Lodge (who's Zeratus?)

I'll soon set off to settle the Kingdom of Discoland. While on my way there, I came across what turned out to be Rim's land. I hope you don't mind if I took some of your manufactured stone to make some tools, Rim. I re-generated it to what it was when I got there.

I noticed that there's an escaped villager next to the water at the base of the... observatory?

I like the looks of everything. I hope to encounter some of you sometime soon. Urby showed up while I was there, but I don't know how long he stayed because I looked at the chat to see "Urby joined the game" followed by "Urby left the game". It must have been while I was looking away from the game.

Check again :) Hammer 3 doesn't do any shift+nudge cloning, and Hammer 4 makes lots of copies if you hold it down. It should probably be an option anyway.
Ow, sorry. I was pretty sure I remembered doing that, but now that you say this, it might have been using something else... probably Corel Draw. I didn't check because I don't have Hammer on this computer.

But yeah, it would probably be the desired behaviour if it made one copy only and moved that copy until you released all the keys. Surely nobody wants a million copies of the same object separated 1 unit each.

YES! YES! I GOT THE GRID AT LAST

Unlike before, it took a few seconds to "load" the new (empty) map. I figure it's something related to the grid. I don't care as longs as it works, it's a small performance detail.

Bugs:
I've noticed "Apply texture to all faces" is now in the texture application window as a modifier of the apply texture button. There's one detail though, and it's that it didn't apply a texture with right click AT ALL until I changed the list box to something else and back (set the left click action to "select" and then back to "lift and select" before right click worked).
Shift+nudging with arrow keys. In Hammer, it would duplicate the object once and then move the copy around until you release all the keys. Here, the object is duplicated for every unit it moves, for as long as you're holding them; you get a gazillion copies and it ends up looking like an extrusion.
3D view mouse look: If the texture application window happens to overlap it by just a bit, and you press Z and move the view in that direction, when the (invisible) cursor goes over that window control it is released from the 3D view and you have to press Z again. I know, just put the window far enough from the 3D view, but it's there.
Small suggestions:
On new map, remember the last configuration used and pre-select it. And an "OK" button for it might be handy as an alternative to double click.
On the texture application window, perhaps making the scale/shift/rotation controls move by a larger amount if right clicking the up/down buttons. Moving the scale setting by 0.25 or 0.5, shift by 8 or 16, and rotation by 5/10 degrees. Or make it configurable, I don't know. Just thought it could be useful.
Questions:
I can't say it bothers me because I've always used the default layout, but I've noticed that the viewport type selection is not there (you know, where you select 3D textured, 3D flat, 3D wireframe, etc.) Was this intentionally dropped or is it just not done yet?
Does/will this run on linux? Because that would be killer.
non development-specific question: I'm too lazy to turn on my old computer and find it there; where is the HL1 FGD in a Steam installation? Because I can't find it.

I like how you can select the source for the textures displayed in the texture browser.

There was something odd but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I realised: Decals are shown coloured! I LIKE THIS.

Can't wait to see the grid. It gets pretty hard to get a reference otherwise.

You reminded me of my very first world. I kept going out to explore and getting lost so I had to set up new bases. After a long time, I managed to find all my other bases and connected them by underground rail.

The world I did delete was in creative mode and I was building awesome stuff. Then I flew too far away and couldn't find my way back.

I got through to the new map, at last. Love the clip tool on steroids. But there is something that, just like in hammer, I don't quite get. Using the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out zooms in/out by strange amounts. It's not just 1.0/1.25/1.5/2.0 or 1.0/0.75/0.5/0.25/0.1, instead the progression is 1.0/1.20/1.44/1.73/2.07 and 1.00/0.83/0.69/0.58/0.48 and so on. What is the logic behind this progression? Because I can't make any sense out of it.

Like Rim, I can't see the grid. I double checked it was turned on in the Map menu, but it's still not there. Neither 2D grid nor 3D grid.

Seems I can't see the Cordon either.

Visual detail: Selection handles aren't always an X. Sometimes they seem to be a pixel or two short, the asymmetry really hurts my OCD.

Yeah it's really handy. Especially because you can have placemarks to guide you back if you fly away in creative mode.

I totally did not delete a world once because I got hopelessly lost.

Unlike your design, this one prevents the block you're breaking from falling back into the lava.

You can extend the pit some... 12 blocks? (the max. number of blocks a piston can push) and produce 12 at once.

Nope, still crashing on File > New.

Suggestions:
  • Make the Options window start at the centre of the screen (it's just a flag in VS). It ends up out of the screen if you're on a low resolution.
  • Add scrollbar to "Full error message" in crash window, I want to read it even if I don't understand it (and it's technically not a "full" error message if only the first 4 lines of it are shown :P )

That would make more sense if we could invent the wheel to attach wagons to the horses. But horses alone are kind of an off-road vehicle.

A friend of mine made a server-side plugin that could turn grass into dirt if you walked on them enough. You could configure how much "enough" was. I could ask her if she still keeps it updated.

No hurries, I'm not actually making any maps right now. I'm looking forward to, though.

Aren't the handles optional in Hammer? You could have the option of turning them on or off.

I think that it's also optional to be allowed to select brushes by their edges instead of their centre handles only.
