Try here if you haven't already.

I've not had any experience with this sort of thing, but you might try to clarify your problem a little bit, for those here who do.

Explain exactly what you want to do, in context to your map, so it's the absolute easiest for us to understand.

Kasperg: Is there a basemap20.rad file for this, or did you just use the standard?

I don't use the standard anymore, and make a mapname.rad for each new map. If you did make a custom rad for this, it would be interesting, if not entirely relevant to see how you had the original lighting.

in Airsoft vs Paintball Post #177082
Airsoft is superior to paintball in every way, save that with Airsoft you have no definitive way to prove if someone's hit.

For that reason only, I think paintball is better.

Laser tag is maybe the best because it has arguably the most accurate way to register and log hits. The only downside to it is you can bounce shots off shiny surfaces, and block your sensors.

We used to have a great lazer tag arena near where I live--Q-Zar--, but it closed a long, long time ago :(

The same method should apply nicely to joining pipes.

NULL brushes will cast shadows, but if you put them "inside" the model, they will darken the lighting on the model--no idea why.

I've heard of people using multiple func_illusionaries set to nearly transparent, and putting them "inside" the tree to give a rough approximation of the shadow, but I've never tried it.

Best Series: TNG. The first few seasons were bad, but after that it pwned all.

Fav TNG episode: Too many good ones to choose...

Fav Character: Data

Best Alien Race: The Borg.

Never really watched the other series, but Sisko seemed like a good captain character from the episodes I did see, and DS9 had some hot female characters like Dax and the Bajoran chick :)

Shatner was always a charismatic actor, but I feel he did his best work in the moveis.

Fav Star Trek Movie: Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan

Fav Ship: I'm still partial to the older generation ships like the refitted Enterprise from movies I, II, and III. The USS Reliant was cool too, and who can forget the original Klingon Bird Of Prey :P

Galaxy Quest was a great movie based upon the original cast.

Nudging Part II

Not only have I found nudging--using the ARROW KEYS to move around brushes and verticies, described earlier in this thread--extremely useful the more I've used it, I've also found scaling the grid very complimentary to it.

If you want to move a brush/vertex across a large expanse, and the the grid is set to it's smallest size--1-unit--it will take quite a long time. Using the ] key to make the grid larger, will make the brush or vertex "hop" from the larger grid lines to another, making it much much faster.

Once you've moved the brush close to where you want it, use the [ key to scale the grid back down, to allow you to line things up perfectly.

I've found nudging and scaling in this way makes complex VM and much eaiser, because you can effortlessly move around CTRL-selected verticies--much like modelling. Also great for moving brushes or CTRL-selected groups of brushes.

That said, I do believe Most Religions are generally a good guideline for humans to follow. It's the zealots that really ruin religion, and make it intolerable to atheists such as myself.

Although I consider myself conservative on many issues, the Religious Right completely loses me. I can almost understand doing it for votes, but I can't abide the powers that be using Religion to control people.

I will agree that Many Americans, myself included, Take the Right to own guns very seriously, but I don't think you can take rights "too seriously".

Though I will grant you that many American citizens don't care about most important issues, and hence things stay the same. I suppose Americans are not the only ones guilty of this.

It is true that gun crime is higher in the U.S. than countries with stricter gun control.

However, I don't believe the answer is taking everyone's Rights away. Instead, make the laws for gun crime and subsequent enforcement/punishment of those laws far more serious than they are currently.

Also, most people don't give the ownership of guns the proper respect, hence 100% preventable tragedies like Columbine, and accidents like Cheney blasting his buddy, happen.

but I know mine are fine.
'Heard that before :P

The only other things I know to cause this error:

Some have claimed that switching to the new compile tools, or back to the old ones--I forget--will cause/fix this error, which is probably caused by extracting Zoner's to a different directory than the originals.

The second is if you change any portion of your directory structure where your compile tools live.

Both of these though are again more or less another way to sayyour configuration is fucked up ;)

Update: Bulletproof CS!

Gaze and be amazed by the size and sheer strength :P

edit: Beating a dead horse here, but I've made a rather important discovery.

The texture of the brush-based entity you're using is very important in terms of it's "bulletproofness".

For example, with a Crate texture, you only need 4 walls to stop the AWP, while with a glass texture, you need 11!

Updating map again to showcase effect.

Certainly not impossible, just highly impractical. How impractical you will only find out if you try it.

You could add a lap bar that held the player in and then moved along with the train, following the same path_tracks.

Start with the tracktrain examples in the Map Vault if you still want to continue. If nothing else it would be a great exercise to try it :)

Still works with no problems a year later, but I'm sure there's some nasty gunk left inside :P

For Steam, The wad files are locked in GCF files. You need GCFScape to extract them, and then place them in the proper directories, but this and much more are covered in the tutorial.

i managed to make a not to thick wall stop a AWP bullet.
I just tested your "trigger only func_wall" and made it 64 units thick and it doesn't stop rifle fire, let alone awp.

Please post an example or more details. I've just built a new test map this. I'm going to try lots of different things and add deagles and auto's to the fold.

Results soon.

edit: AWP, Scout Sniper, and Autos--all snipers apparently-- will penetrate any number of walls, regardless of thickness, and space between walls, at least as far as I have tested.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-14 01:32:36 UTC
in 1337 H4xX0r Post #174156
Just as long as your walls are double layered, that is two brushes, bullets won't go through.
Totally untrue. I tried that method, and varied it using multiple walls at various thicknesses and distances from the next wall.

I think in older versions of CS that method worked, because I've found tons of forums saying it works. Unfortunately, it doesn't :(

I tried about a dozen other methods listed in the link from the VERC Collective, but the AWP defeated them all.

edit: Most of the methods listed in that VERC Collective thread--but certainly not all--will stop regular assault rifle fire, and of course all submachine guns, and pistols. However, I didn't test the auto snipers nor Deagle and again, NONE of them stop the AWP.

Should also be noted that while the AWP always penetrates, it does less damage than normal--you can hit hosties multiple times without killing them.

in Building Your Prop Models Post #173929
I'm currently offering to build prop models--Half-Life, Milkshape--for anyone who wants them, so I can force myself to gain some experience with it.

I'm not so much disillusioned with mapping, as I always enjoy so much more building props for the maps.

One good way to let me know the exact proportions of what you want is to build the prop in hammer first, and then i'll use snapshots from the 2d views as the background in milkshape. After scaling, the proportions turn out to be perfect ;)

Eventually when I get Source installed again, I'll start up with XSI and do the same.

Please PM requests, and perhaps I will post screens of the finished product(s) in this thread.

I would like to believe I gave a crap about the way a maps looks as a mapper--and I do to an extent--, but 2 things here.

1. If you have time to look at the scenery, you are dead or you team is getting raped.

2. If the gameplay is good, and your being competitive, everything else is secondary.
yes, the general population of counterstrikers ARE stupid.
I've pretty much quit CS because nowadays it seems tough to find a server with maps I like, and where people aren't also blatantly aim/wall/speed hacking.
Quote:
I know people in CS1.6 who turn their brightness up all the way just to they can see people in the shadows.............

Most professional players do it, in pretty much every competitive game out there. Most professional players also run with 16-bit color, minimum detail, and very low resolution.

We've had these sort of threads before and I'm sure we'll have them again.

On many issues, I'm sure we will never agree, and that's ok, because at the end of the day, this is all a great exercise.

From time to time, tempers will flare and so will the subsequent flaming. Remember though, that your remarks/exchanges made in anger generally just widen the gap between us, and make it harder to come to any sort of good end.

I admire many people in this thread for if nothing else attempting to go against the majority popular opinion, and not just "curtseying" to the powers that be. It takes a measure of courage and possibly sacrificing friendships doing this, whilst many here are content to simply "follow the train". Bravo to you :)

Satchmo: My respect for you has increased 10-fold since the beginning of this thread. If you write an autobiography, it will be a huge success :)

This creation of yours has been so far and unpredictable roller coaster of adventure! Where will it take us next, nobody knows...

Ant/Seventh: Two people I respect greatly that have had more than your fair share of outright flaming in this thread, imo. First of all, your are mods, so you should take a more neutral position if these kinds of debates, or at the very least be a bit more subtle imo.

Let me tell you first-hand, that you're never going to convince any westerners of anything as long as you stick to your current method of pissing on, deriding, and otherwise pidgeonholing all americans into one lot.

I'm not saying you have to agree with everything I have to say, and you better believe I'm not going to agree with everything you say, but this sensless bickering is pointless.

Ant: One thing that you've said that I agree with 100% is that it's always harder, if not impossible to see yourself, your nation, your work with an unbiased point-of-view, or from the "ousisde". Please keep in mind though, this is a two-way street ;)

Seventh: You are for all intent and purpose the leader of this whole grand and beloved place we call TWHL. Would you not agree a little impartiality might be appropriate? I have the greatest respect for you and the amount of work you pour into this site. Your outright anger towards Americans is almost too much for me to bare sometimes, and it feels like you have a split personality of sorts. On that, I suppose we all do to some degree, plus good and bad days, and whatever, but I think a little less caustic attitude towards your brothers to the west, would be widely a good thing. <rowleybob has a good cry, lights some candels, and starts writing poetry>

ZombieLoffe: Although I don't agree with many of your interpretations, and conclusions, you have been one of the few calm voices of reason in this, and many other threads. You bring hard facts to the table when you're making/defending a point, and mostly always do an outsanding job at it. Your a rare type make it possible for any sort of rational dialogue to begin.

I'm personally guilty of my share of flaming and outrageous remarks in this thread, but I would say a majority of the time I'm very serious about my claims/response. I'm not trying to be undually crass or evil, nor do look at myself or my country as so.

Contrary to what some people think, I'm not trying to cause unnecessary strife and division in a thread that's already full of those, but most of the time I'm just trying to explain my point-of-view, honestly.

I suppose some posts that I regard as flaming are actually the same thing, but one thing's for certain: I think we all need to try harder to understand each other, and not be so quick to attack.

I mean, most of us have spent a lot of time here together at TWHL. I would regard most people here, and everyone listed above as friends--albeit Internet friends--, if not really good ones.

Our population is over 4 times bigger than the UK, and I have no idea what it is for Australia.

It's not that simple Zombie. My claim is that we're so much bigger, you can't compare them per 1000 people. The net population is a factor you're conveniently avoiding.
