In texture application mode, select a face and press "create displacement". It divides the face into triangles and you move them around.

Easy, but there's a bit of a learning curve.

They don't seal the world so you gotta put nodraws behind them (sources version of null)

Hey all

I've seen some shouts that people have been missing streams - you haven't been missing anything.

I'm moving across the country this coming sunday and i've been preparing for that for the past few weeks.

The streams will pick up once again when I have my life in order at my new destination.

Thanks all for your patience and interest.

Select all the vertices and scale the y axis to 0. So press S, Y, type "0", press enter.
Could also be the X axis too. Not sure.

Holding ctrl while moving things snaps to specific increments but it doesn't follow the grid exactly.

You can also set the location in global space.

Hey guys. I'm in Florida at a friends place setting up the rest of my life down here. I have learned last week that my laptop is not properly equipped to stream reliably.

My schedule will be messed up for a few days but i'll be back streaming in a few days.

Thanks for your patience and interest

Well if you think about modern industry and engineering, it's way simpler to reuse pre fabbed standardized units. Like the ISS. Of course the interiors are going to be different but the outside structure is going to be standardized shapes probably with different paint schemes

Well I pay close to $120 USD per month for the fastest internet annnd well I get that. So it's frustrating when stuff doesn't work :(

Anyway all is not lost, we made some progress in the last stream.

Got some of the console modeled up.

Also did a quick mock up of some of additional station areas.
The modular design i have works quite nicely - it takes very little effort to connect sections together

Hey all! As some or many of you may know, I've been streaming on Twitch.Tv for a few weeks (Tuesdays and Sundays) and I've been making some progress on my map every week.

--- My Channel ---

You can also check out some past streams there.

I think i'll just create a thread here to outline the progress of this map. This thread will serve as a WIP screenshot dump, stream update center and I would also love to hear any comments and suggestions about the map, it's design / layout etc..

So! First post will outline what happened in today's stream (May 7th, 2017)

There were some technical difficulties today because i was working with my laptop - AKA sound didn't work for about 20 minutes and then HL2 took over the stream for some reason and I didn't catch it.. HOWEVER progress was made and I'm overall happy with today's results.

1) I outlined the storyline and got some of the main storyline events written and also listed some assets i need to create to finish the map.
User posted image
2) I sketched out the communication terminal asset that will be used throughout the map. I don't want to just use the combine one because well, this is a Black Mesa installation - however the idea is borrowed from combine technology
User posted image
3) Did a block layout of the station and its sections in hammer to get an idea for the scale and flow of the level. I also added in the airlock locations.
User posted image
4) Created building blocks of connecting hallways, station sections, joints and windows. Shown here is every one of those connected together:
User posted image
5) Compiled and ran it!

UV mapping is an art. Takes an hour or so to grasp the basics but then it's a lot of trial and error. Have you tried googling for UV unwrap humanoid or biped? There might be examples that will give you a good starting point regardless of the tools you're using

I haven't had issues exporting Blender models for Goldsource. I'm assuming DP and GS are pretty similar in that regard. Select your edges, Shift-E > Mark Seams. Select all faces, press U > Unwrap.

I liked vista when it first launched. Though It did have some crazy compatibility issues, I remember mapping on it just fine.

Let me ask you something though, you have the half life SDK but do you want to make just maps or start changing code?

If you want to map, all you need is the game, map editor, and a pak explorer

in Im gonna make a map of my school Post #334705
Alright, please don't do that.

I've made a map of my high school. It was a CS map and we had to rescue hostages from the courtyard. Terrorists took the school over and the CTs had to enter and clear it out. It wasn't made with any plans to actually shoot the place up. It was a map that I could share with my friends and have fun on.

I made it because i knew that place inside out and if I wanted to shoot the place up (which I didn't) I wouldn't need a CS or HL map for practice.

That map taught me two things 1) that I love mapping and creating and it's a fun challenge. 2) TWHL.co.za (old website) is the place to go for a warm welcoming community that offers constructive criticism and helps you improve your mapping.

Also, thanks to this website, I was noticed by a publisher and got paid to write a book on the source sdk. I'm published because one day my friends volunteered me to make a map of my HS and I stuck around to improve my skills. That's probably the best case scenario for making a school map in a FPS but this was 13 years ago and a lot has changed. Games have become more mainstream and the media overreacts and causes panic if they catch a whiff of anything that can become a school terror event.

I hate the idea that school breeds sheep to not think. There's a lot of things I think some schools are doing wrong (basing curriculum around standardized tests) however I'm a better person because of the education I have received.

Your life is what you make it. What do you want to do with it?

Measure a map in walking time. Take dust2 for example, you can walk for maybe 10s before you encounter an enemy. Fy_iceworld, thats more like 1s.

If you want fast paced, smaller open maps are good. Slower paced with more sniping, larger. Experiment!

Thanks Dr. Orange. I've used propper in the past and i'm not too keen on the results. I've been getting quite good with Blender recently, so really it's just figuring out the compilation for source.

I need to get the gameplay and storyline down first before i focus on those details though.

This will be a one-off map so i'm not going to do anything crazy.

Hell, knowing my past, i probably won't even finish this thing haha.

@ Windaws, that's good practice for sure. Screenies look great!

Victor, i love that generator room!

I was testing out my space map and I got the env_sun and light_environment angles perfect. Also, I can't make the ship out of a physbox because they don't light dynamically and it ruins the effect of space flight.. I tested my flight thrusters with a car physics model and well...
User posted image
It's pretty hilarious seeing that thing fly around. However, now that I know for a fact the models respond well to lighting changes and such, I need to use a model for my ship.

Now I need to figure out a design for the ship and get a model going. For now though, this car will work just fine for my proof of concept.

Does anyone have a cool sciency space shuttle design they like?

Working on laying the groundwork for an idea i had.
Without giving too much away, the silvery shape to the right is a 'ship' and the gray boxes are phys_thrusters to allow the ship to steer, and env_smokestacks simulate the fuel leaving the ship thrusters.

Simple steering was accomplished using the 4 black buttons that are arranged as a D-pad.

So even though there's gravity in that box, the ship acts as though there is none, and floats around 'weightlessly'.
