What if the competition provided a base minimod, so that when all the entries get gathered together, they all go into one mod folder for easy grouping?

And can we get an official word specifically on custom code, because I feel like that is sort of a different level of custom content that doesn't tend to fit with these sorts of competitions.

I just can't hold my interest in Minecraft for long. History has demonstrated this many times, and this was no different. I had fun, but... yeah. I don't think I have any more in me for now.

I read one of their recent update blog things, and it seems like they've got plenty of balance and feature updates in the pipeline.
Oh, I forgot Astroneer in that list, too.

That's right, the beta's one was that, wasn't it? I forget, what's the mechanism behind that? Was it a simple vote for winner, count the votes deal?

Either way, that'd be the way to go, I imagine.

I don't actually like the sprite entities that much, on the whole. I'd prefer a texture of sorts for the blocks, but I don't know if the editor can do that at all.

... Can the editor do that at all? Pebs, can Sledge do that?
Jessie JessieTrans Rights <3
As Urby said, it's in the mod Spirit of Half-Life. In that it's just another attribute on a given entity. It's a fairly basic function, and doesn't work particularly well with anything more than the most simple movement.

That's more or less how mine is set up. I've got:
  • Favourites: What I'm currently playing (or what I leave there optimistically in the vain hope that it will will me to play more of it, like NieR)
  • Backlog: What I want to play at some point in the future but am not currently playing due to lack of present interest or early access titles, etc.
  • Completed: Games that I feel I've gotten as much out of them as I'm going to, and am not likely to play again
  • Gldsrc/Source: A clustering of all those games so I don't have to hunt for them mid-stream every time
  • Gldsrc/Source Mods: As above, but custom mods
  • Local Multiplayer: All the games that I know have local multiplayer for when they are required
  • Meh: Games that I have no interest in, betas, or games that are rendered redundant by another game (Eg. Skyrim by the special edition)
  • Games: Everything else

How about having the text entry box in the shoutbox expand when you're typing a longer shout into it (text-message-style)? I don't know how easy that is to implement on a webpage. But left- or right-arrowing through the message is not always practical, especially on mobile.

I mean, the gun thing is (and has been for a long time) damn near farcical. The sheer fetishization of a thing so dangerous, kept afloat by a religious dedication to a piece of paper written up centuries ago (as though it would remain perfectly relevant and meaningful after all the changes in technology and civilization we've been through and will continue to go through). And any attempt to change the status quo gets steamrolled by an organization that is rolling in money because of them, that bankrolls the politicians and does its damnedest to convince everyone that they need these things that they are being occasionally slaughtered with.

But masculinity? Yes, that's certainly part. It's exactly why toxic masculinity is a phrase. Toxic because it isn't just harmful to people who aren't male, but harmful to males as well. Obviously individual circumstances vary, not everyone goes nuts with a gun, etcetera. But it's why the suicide rates of males are so much higher than females. It's why mass shootings are overwhelmingly done by males. The male experience is driven by the idea that no matter what happens, you must be manly. Repress emotions, no crying, be strong, be cool, don't be a girl, and enforce it all on the people beneath you. Not everyone can handle this (nor should they have to), and society's disapproval of that only exacerbates any issues a person might already have. It's all driven by the sentiment that femininity is bad and should be rejected. And that hurts everyone.

Been sinking my teeth into Monster Hunter World. I got into the Monster Hunter series several games ago, so I'm no stranger to their tendencies towards somewhat arcane, obscure or opaque systems. And as much as I enjoyed those games despite that (and I enjoyed them a whole lot), the ways in which World strips down just about every system from those games down to their core and rebuilt them into more sensible, enjoyable forms... World is really good. If the series has repelled you in the past, World seems like a really good opportunity to give it another try. And if you haven't tried them at all before, now is a good time!

I don't know why my name is the example for the filename format, but I look forward to all entries being attributed to me.

Presumably the main differences between this and the last compo are that it must be single player, and that it should be a unique area (that fits the Black Mesa aesthetic) rather than a reimaginin of an existing one.

I'm just going to keep putting random site ideas here.

What about a way to tag people in forum posts and journals, Twitter-style? Maybe create a one-off notification on the thread when someone tags you. Format could be simply "@Jessie", or perhaps some other format more in line with the rest of the WikiCode, like "[user:3643]". Not sure how easy it would be to prevent re-notifications via editing and other quirks.

The crossbow is usually cheap, and I suppose its fine as long as its recognized as such. I might go for it occasionally, but it's not the sort of thing I enjoy using too much in HLDM. Same goes for the other particularly powerful weapons, like the egon and the gauss (at least, when its being used offensively).

You mean "smash"

Of course, the other aspect of this is that, assuming we're still talking sticking as close to vanilla as possible, is that it still would be deathmatch at its core. I don't know how much coding it would require if you wanted to disable or restrict friendly fire, respawning, respawning ammo, etc.

I think specifically level changes are a problem. I believe most entities function normally (though most monsters require “mp_allowmonsters” to be set to “1”), however level changes (at least, how they’re set up in the base game) do not function. There could be more, for all I know.

Given your track record of abandoning projects, you might find it difficult to find dedicated assistance without more concept material. Sketches, outline of the story/gameplay beats, etc.

Apart from giving people a better idea of what you want to create, it would also help give people confidence that you're actually going to stick with the project.
