hear the howls and see the fast zombies jumping from roof to roof against you - pretty nervwrecking.
For some reason, even though the gunship or the strider is probably a lot more dangerous than a fastzombie, those fleshed-out things scared me more than any other enemies. Perhaps it's because they just look crazy, and they jump all over the place. They also swarm in hordes, and that makes them very hard to shoot.

But I liked Unreal II more than NOLF 2. NOLF 2 just felt very repetitive after a while, and I gave up after running around in those Russian bunkers for so long.

Yeah, if you really suck, the high school actually kicks you out.

But I mean, those people will not show up in class for more than two months at a stretch, and they fail all of their courses.

What else can you do with them?

I agree with Kasperg on Unreal II. The night-time level in the alient forest was amazing, especially with the sound effects. The level where you had to protect your ship from invading female warriors (a meadow-looking place with huge boulders) was wonderful too.

However, Ravenholm and the underbelly of the steel bridge in Half-Life 2 were also groundbreaking.

in High School Drop-outs Post #160327
I was reading a newspaper article on the high drop-out rates in the United States for high school students.

It's really pathetic. Nearly half of the high school students drop out from school, and most will never attain an equivalent degree. Almost all of them end up in dead-end, menial jobs. And statistics show that they will die nine years earlier than high school graduates.

They are also more likely to commit crimes and end up on government financial support. They lead miserable lives in general.

And what's difficult for me to relate is that they have such profound apathy toward learning. Most high school students have no desire to achieve anything, and they have no pride in their accomplishment.

I cannot fathom their mentality. For me, being anything less than the best simply wasn't an option. It's like releasing a full-bright map--it's just not acceptable.

Anyway, I have a grim view of the future if the world is going to be populated by these underachievers. I hope everyone at TWHL will never go down that road, because it's dark and cold.

No, not path_corner or info_node.

You have to generate a navigational mesh. Source hostages use the mesh, just like the bots.

Just type "bot_add" from the console, and wait a long time for the mesh to be automatically generated.

You can generally bulid the exact same one yourself with half the cost...and you don't have to settle for some component you don't like or want.

You pay for the convenience.

Here is an interesting link from Turtle Rock Studio on how they developed the map for de_inferno. It's very educational for any mapper, in my opinion.

I couldn't decide whether this is the right forum for this post, but it's not a mapping question, and it's not about any custom map in particular. So I posted it here.

The screens do take forever to load, but patience pays off at the end for the fascinating development timeline.

Most likely, you have heard of Jonathan "Fatal1ty" before.

He's the legendary gamer who won more than $300,000 a year from CPL championships. He's the best of the best. You'll never want to fight him in a deathmatch.

However, he's gone mainstream now. His story was featured on "60 Minutes", a CBS news show in the United States. There's a snippet in the show about a seven-year-old deathmatcher who won more than $2,000 in prize money, dueling against adults. I thought that was most amazing.

You can watch the show segment online.

In "Opposing Force", I used my crowbar to smash a shitload of crates, trying to find anything useful in them. I just held down the primary fire button and kept going...

...until I smashed a crate that contains a rocket launcher, and because I was still holding down the fire button, I launched a rocket at my ankle.

It wasn't pretty, but I laughed out loud. I bet that was a trap the mapper intentionally placed in there.

I bet you only textured a single surface of the ceiling brush with the "tools/toolsskybox" texture.

Light_environment is useless if you did not texture the whole brush with the skybox texture.

in looking for HL solo missions... Post #158204
Have you seen my old HL1SP maps yet? I wouldn't say that my maps are as good as the HL1 official ones, but at least they are fun.

Escape from Black Mesa takes about twenty minutes to beat.

Museum Lockdown lasts about fifteen minutes.

And lastly, Two Towers is a very small and short map. It was created only for demonstration purposes. But you can still play it.

They are all very challenging. So be prepared.

And Minimicus is one of the most creative single-player custom maps I've played.

Captain P's Playtest has very good architecture, and it simply looks beautiful.

True gamers (particularly FPS gamers) would never settle for the console experience. The control is simply inadequate.

Consoles are designed for casual gamers who don't know the difference between a AGP and PCIe. Consoles are easy to set up, and pretty much mindless to install. Those are the advantages.

But in the process, you sacrifice graphics, ease of control, and mod-ability.

Typos and misspelled words always bother me, but I know I am an obsessive-compulsive freak who gets annoyed at every little things.

However, I try not to impose my compulsion on others. People have different standards, and we're talking about a gaming forum here. I don't take things too seriously when it comes to gaming.

As long as I can understand what they're trying to say, I just let it go. In fact, sometimes I even quote bad grammar and typos in my posts. I figure the writer should have the ownership of the post I am quoting, so I resist the temptation to modify them.

And 1337 speak is another matter. You're suppose to type certain words the "wrong" way when you're typing 1337. For example: "That was teh pwn!"

I think I am the only one who types complete sentences with proper punctuation and capitalization in the middle of a firefight in CS:S. Maybe that's why I die so often.

HL will not die until its uncompatable, and even then some die-hard mod-makers'll still use it
And even after that, there will be software emulators so the engine can still run on far more advanced (but incompatible) machines.

I posted my first map at TWHL more than a year ago. It was made of two rooms with two pillars in each. There were about six headcrabs and a zombie, plus a Gargantua in there. I must have played that map myself over fifty times. I thought it was just the most clever map ever. The player had to lob grenades over a pushable barrier in order to kill the Gargantua.

I was so proud of it...until I saw what other people were mapping.

I deleted it from the vault a long time ago. But man, those were the days.

It was the best feeling though--getting your first map compiled and running. And getting RAD to compile for the first time was very awesome too (for some reason, the initial compilation setting for Worldcraft set RAD to "off").

And "Escape from Black Mesa" was the first reasonable map I released. I was still figuring out how to use Worldcraft at the time. I completed that map before ever playing HL1.

I think there is a way to include custom models in .BSP. I've seen other people do it in their HL2DM maps. But I don't know how it's done.

Framerates is irrelevant, because it's not really for gameplay anyway. You can always use a bunch of hint brushes and areaportals to optimize it, of course. And the props can be optimized by changing their viewing distance and by using occluders.
