Nah, I disagree UPnP is for the shucks. A high security risk. Keep it on only when you need to, i.e. after you've bought a new piece of software, so it can configure itself.

Garg, you ignorant fuck. 2500 is no small number. All together the coalition has lost more than America lost in 9/11. Ugh, I just don't get why Bush would send soldiers to war. No man can be that heartless, right? I damn-well hope he did think there were WMD's in Iraq because society may be kind now, but in 50 years there won't be many to defend him and we will know everything.

in Bye bye, Bill Gates Post #185929
I use Linux quite regularly on my mini-pet 'puter and trust me, Linux is far from problem free :P

The truth is, MS have made the best desktop OS out there, it seems hard to believe they are best at something but it's true. They've got things like compatability, which consumers actually care about, right. Some would argue that Mac OSX is superior but they've failed on compatability, they broke everything and they're not showing signs of getting better. They have two versions of their OS on two different platforms ffs.

Okay, so Windows has a lot of bugs, but trust me, Vista will fix that. I'm sure some other flaw will crop up, but there simply is no better alternative that can handle everything it does. No-one wants to/can develop an OS to rival it. No matter how hard you try, OSX+ will always run on Mac hardware, that's what makes it successful in it's own little way but in the industry as a whole, makes it unsuccessful. And for Linux/Unix they're not ideal desktop OS's. They were simply not started for that purpose. Give it a few years, about four, and the whole desktop Linux bubble will collapse, they'll have realised that home consumer products are better off to be made by large multi-nationals with lots of R&D money.

Sorry Elon, my comments were a little harsh, I was just trying to shock you into action. :D

150 years ago, travel was for the extremely rich or governments, ie. armadas. I don't need to tell you how much has changed. The same will happen to space-travel. It will get cheaper and cheaper until we can do it individually. Around about that stage, we'll discover a new frontier and this cycle will continue until we kill our own sorry little asses OR god experiences down-time and doesn't create enough frontiers for us to piss with, k?

Why do you even bother to comment on a discussion thread started by Elon? He's still a nublet, unable to recognise that the real world is not black and white and not everyone is just plain evil/greedy or selfless/flawless.

Apart from the MPAA of course, they're EVIL.

I think more and more CPU cores will eradicate the need for a PPU. MS just need to alter parts of Windows to suppourt core dedication to a fuller extent. In the future you may even see 'cards' which are basically just memory units dedicated to one job, since buying yet another transistor would be pointless if you have a few spare un-used ones on your CPU.

Pure speculation of course, but it's highly likely.

The ironic thing is that even this beast isn't truly a DX10 card. :D
It can't be until MS finalize DX10 and then nVidia can re-assess their line. It will run it though, don't worry about that. Well, actually, only Vista will suppourt DX10, so we're all screwed.

And to whoever automatically assumed this was more powerful than the 360's GPU, smitten be thee. Don't ever even remotely compare PC's vs. consoles. Consoles have to deal with so much less, they can get away with being half as powerful and yet still deliver top-quality graphics.

I'd agree, I'm pretty impressed with this latest card and its price. Although, I do think nVidia are perhaps rushing too many cards into the market. If only they'd take more time on cost-reduction R&D then we'd all be happy.

Take one of those, a Conroe 2 and you have something worthy enough to give even the straightest of men a 'hard-on'.

Xyos, I fully understand that there are many, many smart Americans.
I'm not sure you understand what I am saying. I have never doubted there aren't smart people in America, but even if the smartest man/woman in the world does live in America, there are plenty of dumb people to counteract him/her.

Do you get me?

J3r3my, by calling you dumb, I was really refering to your beliefs in God. I do not understand why a person would believe such a thing and therefore I think you are naive for believing it. For me it's the equivalent of a man watching a magician perform magic and people believing it is magic. I would think they are dumb, and in the same respect I think you are dumb.

Why would you jump to the conclusion that God created everything just because you don't understand the universe yet? Humans still have much to learn, why don't you just wait? :D

You don't understand the concept of smart/dumb either.
I think nobody, absolutely nobody, can say their view of the Universe smart/dumb is not flawed.

We could do this all day, nobody has the correct opinion.

I'm gonna withdraw from arguing on this. It's not gonna get me anything but extra keypulses on WhatPulse.

EDIT: I don't think Einstein and Edison are totally dumb, I just think that their religious beliefs are dumb, I respect them highly for what they have given us.

I don't think all Americans are dumb, I'm just saying that the American public is quite dumb compared to other countries. This is not to say you are all dumb, it can still be a small majority.

J3r3my, you've just proven that he did 'invent' it. He certainly knew what his research was capable of. I never said that he liked the idea either, he just though, (at the time) that the benefits outweighed the disadvantages.
That was Ben Franklin.

You think youre smarter than any religious person and you cant even get your facts right. Hypocrite.
Okay, you got me there. It was just one fact, I'm not too bothered.

What I find interesting is that you believe knowledge determines how smart you are. Any dumb-fuck can carry around a dictionary, only someone literate can read it.

I do think I'm smarter than any religious person. Correct indeed.
I believe their view of the universe is flawed, however they believe fully in their view. Therefore I think they're dumb. It's hard to give you a good analogy for this, simply because it's mostly specific to religions. Maybe that's what is so hard about religious arguments. They are one of a kind, humans have never had much experience in this area so we divide into the the natural groups:

People who believe everything;
People who believe nothing;
People who want to believe what they like.

btw, J3r3my, I don't want this to turn into a slag-match between us. If at any point you feel incapable of writing a sentence that does not include an insult directed at me, then don't bother even writing. I want to debate with you, not make you look like a fool.

EDIT: I blame the Edison mistake on the film I watched last night :D 'National Treasure'. Great film.

All the crap people have said against my argument in the past two days
If you are wondering, yes, I do think both Thomas Edison and Einstein were dumb. Very dumb. Yeah, Einstein was an excellent mathematician, I don't dispute on that, but how does maths help you justify God? Maybe Einstein was driven to insanity because of his invention of the atomic bomb? the one greatest threat to the current world. In this he needed reasoning, he needed someone to justify it, tell him that he has not created something that could potentially lead to the end of the human civilisation or at least wipe out tens of millions of people with ease. Who better than 'God'?

As for Thomas Edison, he flew a kite in a thunder-storm, he pretty much summarises the American public right there.

What's more ironic is that the distributor for the Wii (in the UK), is named Koch :D

'Wii will be distributed by Koch'

It's pronounced cock, if you didn't realise.

J3r3my, I'm sorry but it's a fact that the American public is, in general, dumber than most other developed nations.
Im a Christian. Im conservative. Doest that make me dumb?
Yes, in my view it does, if you believe in God, you are automatically dumb in my point of view. It's as simple as that. I'm not going to go soft on Christianity and say it isn't dumb compared to something like Scientology just because it's mainstream.

You may think I am dumb for not believing in God, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it, but don't expect many people to agree with you, at least not here on TWHL.

Just out of interest, who banned you? I need to go have a 'word' with this great horrific person.

Just had an idea, since everyone's using last.fm nowadays couldn't we have an official Now Playing section which would show the latest songs played by users?

All the feeds from audioscrobbler are there, shouldn't be too hard.

in Valve with XBox 360 Post #177240
I personally think this is great news, think of being able to make a map for a game where everyone has the same extremely good hardware (for now anyway). You can add all the nice details in and not worry about it being too laggy for some players, if it works on yours, it works on everyones.

Regarding the Xbox version of HL2 being a flop, I think that is the reason why Valve are doing this. They want to prove that they can make console games, so far they only have a stronghold in the PC market.

To be fair to them, they released it just when the 360 came out, not a very good incentive to buy an Xbox game.

The posing got better after the first half, imo. It's good but there isn't anything gripping, maybe you should add something funny in? Right now it's just another wacky storyline.

Russia is a country still full of high-level corruption, people inside could easily overthrow the government if necessary, and plus, concentrate on the largest nation in the world, China, they don't need an excuse to get rough with America.

Anyway, did anyone read the news the other day on how the US won't be able to reach it's 2007 Nuclear De-Arming deadline? Why does no-one care about that and yet everyone is worried that some small country is enriching uranium? If they wanted, the Americans could launch a Nuclear Missile within an hour.

About the Iran, North Korea and why America won't invade the right person, issue:

I hope that Europeans have learnt from the mistakes of Iraq and won't rush in again. I'm not saying that Iran will crush the US by any means but the problem is that they have a leader who wants to. Saddam Hussein went into hiding as soon as the US started attacking, he knew it was over. There was no military to even slow down the US of A, however with Iran, they'll put everything in front of them.

Maybe my view is too extreme, but I think this may cause some kind of WWIII or at least a very serious dispute, countries like China and Russia will remain neutral for a while and then take the chance to pounce on America. With Iran, China and Russia in front of America, they could have a serious problem. Hopefully Europe will rush in and save the day, ideally pressuring the countries by restricting trade.

Those are also ironically the two things that are holding back China, corruption and it's way-too-massive population. It's helped it in some arenas like sport but in normal life it has just added to the corruption and poverty. At least that's my view, it's not an exact science.

I'm surprised by the insensetivity of some people, I was asked earlier today if I want to be set-up, maybe it's just me who's a slow mover but I'm not gonna date someone-else the day after a pretty serious relationship.

PS, don't date devout christian women.

It'll be a wierd transition for us, the world will be much more orientally influenced, however, I think for China to fully takeover they must let their own citizens embrace American culture more freely, otherwise we'll have another massive war with the victor emerging as the world ruler.

That's moving a bit off topic though.

My girlfriend broke up with me a few hours ago, I feel severely depressed inside, I'm just trying to occupy myself with other things.

sigh

I also thought as if we were getting on pretty well. We weren't that bad.

It was all down to a 'trust' argument we had a few days ago, she said that changed her perspective.

Xyos, you're full of bullshit and it's unfortunate that VOX is feeling patriotic today and is listening to some of your opinions. Face it, the US is a big bloated super-power too arrogant to admit that it no longer has the power that it used to. The US has never been smart, it's survived solely on quantity not quality.
Our country supplies many 3rd world countries with food, clothes, shoes etc. so they can survive. Do any of your countries spend billions of dollars doing that?
Actually proportionally, the US gives very little compared to the massive wealth it has gained from bullying those poor countries.

Xyos, let me guess you are a.... born again Christian?

Now, I've heard of of patriotism before but what you've just done can only be described in my opinion, as
Bush-administration cock-sucking.

I would go through and tell you why each of your points are total BS but Loffe's already done an excellent job.

Is it just me who has been noticing an extreme increase in total idiots lately? We really shouldn't be having this argument, it's plain obvious.

in Half-Life 2 on a Mac? Post #172874
Errr.... hate to ruin all your dreams but the latest Core-Duo iMacs running Windows, run HL2 perfectly. Macs are technically ahead one-generation in processor capabilities. Since, most companies like Dell are sticking to the old P4's.

What people don't get is that Mac's are PC's when running Windows.
Now people could say "OS X is useless for gaming" and that would be a different argument. Apple's a hardware company, hence the reason that they can't code their own kernel.

Yus, get a SIM-Card reader. Most of them don't even need a computer, you'll be able to read all the data off of there.

Think about the moral issues involved in this though.

in HD-DVD Vs. Bluray Post #169380
m0p, most new cards don't even suppourt HDCP so I don't think right now is the best time for this argument.
anyone heard about holographic storage?
Indeed, the rare thing about those is that the actual "disks" are very cheap. They cost around 50P for 300GB ones. However, the reader/drive costs upwards of ?2,000.

The supposed 3TB is not a reality yet but it's entirely possible. I think it may be the storage of the future but those drive prices really need to be pushed down.

I have to say one more thing about HDCP; it is entirely down to your computers OS on whether it is enforced or not. Currently Windows Vista, (that necessary evil that we will all be using) suppourts HDCP but it will not be made immediately compulsory. That doesn't mean that MS can't flick a switch one day and make it compulsory for all video.

EDIT: BTW, I didn't mean to use "BS" in an elitist way. I just use it for things I think of as false.

in HD-DVD Vs. Bluray Post #169293
And to make things worse your comp has to be HDCP compliant. That means:
-Your disk drive will have to be HDCP compliant
-Your motherboard will have to be HDCP compliant
-Your graphics card will have to be HDCP compliant
-Your operating system will have to be HDCP compliant
 • Even your monitor will have to be HDCP compliant
I'm sorry to say that most of what you said is BS, HDCP is a form of DRM acting only on digital video signals. Yes GPU's will have to suppourt it but there is no restriction on a GPU through HDCP. It's only needed because it's a lower level DRM (higher if you prefer). Your motherboard and disk drive will not need to be HDCP compliant. They aren't invloved with HDCP in any way. Furthermore, you're safe if you use VGA. DVI and HDMI are the two planned uses of HDCP.

Personally I'm fine with HDCP, the HD-DVD and Bluray forums have stepped out and said that they understand HDCP will lose a lot of customers and will only enforce it in the most important areas.
blu-ray only has one layer
Again, BS. Bluray is also planning to implement 3 layers.
