The game is only rendered by clients. Otherwise, servers would need good GPUs.

"Everything rendered at once for multiplayer" is a myth that refuses to fade away. Multiplayer is rendered just like single-player - whatever the engine deems "visible" is rendered.

Use those hint brushes.

That was the stupidest response ever. You claim that Half-Life is now "infiltrated by Steam" so Srry offered you a solution: Steam-less WON-based Half-Life.

lol, hard drive failures. All of my hard drives work fine:

500MB (Power Mac 7200/75)
4GB (iPod mini)
10GB (IBM Aptiva)
120GB (Current HP)
250GB (MyBook)

I've dropped each one at least a few times, turned off the computer while writing a big file, etc. That doesn't make me careless though, I make backups.

Luke:

The media loves to harp on (incredibly rare) suicidal cults. Besides the fact that it's a death and gloom type of story, there's a "satanic"/ drugs/ mind control connection to reinforce cult stereotypes. There's a very obvious slant againist non-mainstream religions in mainstream news.

Lowering the resolution will really help cut down memory usage, but windowed mode will cause more problems.

Can't Half-Life 2 be run in DirectX 6 mode? http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/DirectX_Versions

It's ridiculous how hardware and software sales drive each other. Nvidia and AMD could have so many more users if they brought the price of a good GPU to $200, not this $550 (new dell laptop) crap. I guess it's like Segways: pwny experience for the few who can afford to waste money. For the rest of us who have bills to pay or just common sense, lag.

Oh well, Bioshock, UT3, Crysis, Halo 1+2+3, here I come.

World Crafter: Yeah, I think VALVe pulled that "give the CD keys to your friends" excuse out of their ass. That's what guest passes are for, we don't need to waste $30 doing that. I could of course, download a copy from the other digital distribution platform, and give the purchased to my friends.

[GtB]Blitzkrieg: I'd sell you my (used) retail copy of Episode One for $5, but Steam does not alllow this.

Hmmm let's compare:

PC Gaming

+ Is a Windows capable computer: web browsing, typing, able to use mods, able to make mods, VoIP, IM
  • Is a Windows capable computer: system maintenance, performance is wild, crashes, drivers problems, glitches, bugs, Steam, etc. One needs to sit down at desk, connect to plasma (burn-in!) TV, or deal with slow laptop GPU/ short battery life.
+ Exclusive PC games
  • Exclusive console games (Halo 2 counts here, that Vista port is nothing worth playing)
+ Mouse is excellent for FPS games
  • EXPENSIVE!!! (If you want a good experience. Budget machines that cost more than a Xbox 360 means 800x600, low settings, and lag - not my idea of a good time).
  • Free online play
+ Games are capable of the best graphics if you have a very fast machine two years after a new console generation is released. A Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB of DDR2-800, and a 8600GT trounces the Xbox 360 in performance now (1280x720, 4xAA, etc)

Xbox 360

+ Runs only games, that means very few technical difficulties and all your computing
+ Simple
  • Loading times are like that of a low-end PC
  • Pay to play online
  • $60 dollar games that get their price lowered slower than PC games
  • Controllers. Hate them or love them, I still think $1500 is worth the lack of a mouse controls and letter keys. I heard UT3 will support them though.
+ Your machine is guaranteed to last 5 years, none of this "Shader Model 3 support was not detected" crap.
+ Price. $350 and some accessories are still a whole lot cheaper than a comparable computer plus the cost of upgrades. In order to be able to play the latest games enjoyably for 5 years, it's about $1500 up front, and then maybe two $200 upgrades down the line. Computers use more power as well.
+ Exclusive console games
  • Exclusive PC games
I have a 720p/1080i capable HDTV. The expenses of being a PC gamer are completely out of control, mainly due to this graphics over gameplay rat race (Doom 3 anyone?)

Penguinboy is a Valve shill. My reason is principal (what the heck does looping sound crashes have to do with anything?)

I'll wait until Episode Two + Team Fortress 2 + Portal is offered at retail. I'm not bowing into their pressure. I could understand their move if it provided me with a benefit as well, but it's just trying to squeeze more money out of their customers.

On a similar note, iTunes knows it's selling a crippled product, so it provides a reduced price.

Kasberg, those games are from 2003. This is a new wave of games with much steeper system requirements. PC gaming is really expensive.

I'm considering one of those Xbox 360s. They've got HDMI ports and all the newest FPS games for just $350. While the games are $60, and joysticks don't allow for super fast aiming, it's still a heck of a lot cheaper than getting a cutting edge computer.

Up to date? Valve won over quite a lot of customers when they made DX6, DX7, DX8, and DX8.1 modes for Half-Life 2. It did take more effort to create these fallback modes, but more people could play, and thus, pay.

Luke: It was a pretty good machine back then, it wasn't some shitty budget box with only 4MB of RAM.

Even web browsing and word processing is something with skyrocketing system requirements. Windows Vista, Norton/ McAfee, Office 2007 and really fucking bloated websites (IGN, Myspace, Youtube, etc) need a rather formidable machine.

My Mac from 1995 is still a functional machine, but this rat race has made it a piece of junk.

It better be.

DoD:S had a huge hype build-up, over 40,000 people played it, and then everyone realized it was a waste of $20. The sadest part is the DoD:S official forums are less an exchange of ideas, more of a circle jerk.

EDIT: Xfire says it's German. This is going to lag badly if I can connect.
