It's all relative. I have a low-end machine right now, with 1.2 GHz and 512 MB and Radeon 9200. It can barely run Half-Life 2, but it chokes on FarCry. I wouldn't even consider running Doom3 on it (not that I would want to anyway).

Most likely, I'll be upgrading to a Pentium 4 with 3.0 GHz with 1 GB and ATI Radeon 9600 (128 MB) this summer. And hard drive space? It depends on what you do with your computer. I'll probably get 200 GB Seagate, since it only costs around US$70 nowadays.

It'll probably cost around $1,500 to put it all together, which is reasonable.

One of my coworkers has been trying to convince me to buy one of those elite Alienware machines. It would cost me over US$5,000, and I don't think I'll ever be willing to spend so much on a computer.

I'd say $1,500 tops for a new machine.

Yeah, life can deal you all the wrong cards sometimes, but you shouldn't take it out on others, especially those who have nothing to do with your problems.

And for your edification, "satchmo" is the official nickname for Louis Armstrong, the great Jazz trumpet player. Satchmo is short for "satchel mouth", a description given to him by close friends because the way he blows his trumpet/cornet. In fact, it appears on his personal stationary.

http://www.satchmo.net/bio/

I read Louis Armstrong's biography and I know almost everything about him. Needless to say, I am a jazz fan.

Kasperg, your English is very good. In fact, you're indistinguishable from a native speaker.

I learned Spanish because I live in California. I use it every day at work to communicate with my mostly Hispanic patients. I wish I could speak better and understand more. It's a beautiful language.

Unfortunately, most of the times I say things like "tiene vomito? tiene tos? hay sangre en su poopoo?"

It's not your English skill people are criticizing, it's your attitude. And here it goes again.

There are plenty of people at TWHL whose native language isn't English (myself included; please see http://twhl.co.za/forums.php?pgt=1&action=viewthread&id=6739&pg=1). Fortunately, they are nice people and they are mature enough to communicate their ideas without resorting to shouting obscenities. No one objects to a few misspelled words and grammar errors.

You gotta reign in your behavior and control yourself. You will not get any respect at TWHL or anywhere for acting like a rabid animal.

Personally, I believe the whole HL and HL2 experience is a virtual reality simulation for Gordon Freeman, who is a physicist but training to become an elite soldier.

GMan is a guide program inserted into the training program to guide Gordon's training. That's why the program can "break" and stop time. It's kinda like "The Matrix" and "Total Recall".

Every single character in both games are just simulated experience generated by a supercomputer. Through the whole time, Gordon is just strapped in his VR chair.

1. Your hardware is adequate, but Hammer won't run very fast.

2. Select prop_jeep from the entity list. Choose the buggy model from the entity property. It needs to be placed in a single player map. Multiplayer maps don't support the buggy without having some relatively annoying issues.

I've experienced similar problem too on my custom maps. I think I've figured out the pattern.

If I load up the map from the console and save the game, and I reload the game later, I almost always get the AI_Disabled message. But if I load up the map from the console each time (instead of loading them from a previously saved game), I almost never get this message. Occasionally, I'll get this problem over and over, but it'll resolve when I restart HL2.

I figure it's a path bug from Valve. I hope they're going to fix it soon. Because sometimes even after I enabled the AI, the info_node information still seem to be missing (because the Combines don't seem to know where to go).

in Bushes in Hammer 4.0 Post #79028
The question is vague. What does it mean for the brushes looking like crap? Are they just very rectangular and uninteresting (because you didn't spend a lot of time putting in the details)? Do they lack good texturing?

Inherently, there is no difference in making a brush for Hammer 4 compared to the previous versions. The process is identical. There are some new tricks you can do to make them better looking, like including a env_cubemap. There are also a few more tools for making basic geometry (the torus and sphere tools, for example).

Have you mapped for HL1 before? If you're experienced with that, you shouldn't have any trouble making the transition.

You clearly have a leak in your map. And from the compilation report, you've already made a pretty big map.

I highly discourage making a big map until you've got a small box map working. Start simple, and gradually build bigger and more complex maps once you've got more experience.

Once again, read the tutorial first.

in VIS Post #75894
Please read the tutorial first before asking questions. Carefully study this tutorial: http://cariad.co.za/twhl/tutorial.php?id=35

This is an excerpt from the tutorial:

Although this program doesn't have to be run to make your map work, and you may not even notice a difference when you do run it, it is crucial for final compiles. VIS calculates which polygons are visible from every point in the map, so that only polygons visible to the player are drawn at each point. If not run, every polygon will be visible from every point in the map, which can cause major performance loss in big maps, or on slow PCs.

But you still have to read through the whole thing to have it make sense.

This rule always apply: read the tutorial first before posting questions on the forum. I'll let it slide this time, but another member might not be so nice to you.

My original intention of the post was to prevent people from embarrasing themselves by posting un-original maps and then get flamed by a lynch mob. But I guess getting flammed and learn your mistakes that way isn't a bad idea afterall. Because, for some, that's what it takes for them to learn their lessons. Sometimes multiple maps need to be criticized before they realize that they need to spend a lot more time and planning on their maps before releasing them.

Hey, if being hit on the head with a slimy trout is what it takes for some to learn, so be it.

I think a lot of problems and "bugs" will clear up once the official SDk comes out. People seem to be experiencing all sorts of problems currently while making maps for HL2.

And unfortunately, because it's so new, very few have the answer to these questions.

I would imagine it's best to focus on building the basic architecture and texturing for now before the SDK is available. Otherwise, so much time would be wasted on basic problem-solving instead of spending time on creativity.
