We need more phsycological movies - no monsters, no aliens, no special effects, just films that make you think about what the hell could be happening behind that door.... never show your audience what's scary - because it just wont be scary. Imagination, directors! You're supposed to be renowned for it
Agreed.

The scariest film I ever watched (maybe it was because I was younger) was 'The Woman in Black'. It's not on TV very often, and I havent come across it much in the stores, but if you do see it, maybe you'll know what I mean

Ah, don't worry about that city map, It was mainly just an experiment to see if it was possible to use my textures for the city, I dont think I'll do more to the map, I will basically do another -- better ;)

Yeah, I dont think there is one so-called horror film that is even slightly scary or not aimed at a teenage audience... At leats not since the 70's, at least the horror films were funny, if not scary.

Modern films always over-use computer effects, and it just makes the monsters look like, well, shit.

Oh, one more thing, I must credit AnImE PiMp for the extremely wrecked-looking supermarket. I had to use the prefab because it was so useful for what I needed. All I did was change some of the structure, and use my own textures.

Anyway, I have been mapping part of the city lately. Here are the screens so far: (At the moment the sky is set to the hl city theme, but I'll change that soon.)

Various parts of the different shops/buildings are destroyed due to previous looting and chaos. The lights are not active because there isnt any power in the city, apart from the Underground systems controlled by the Upper Hand. I am currently working on a way to block the roads, probably as I mentioned before by using jacknifed lorrys or burning tires etc. I will also place in those barrels with flames everywhere (the only source of light/heat for the contestants)

As for the weaponry of the Upper Hand, definately much better arsonal, because they are far from primitive/basic. It could be that they once managed to kidnap and use the technological minds of scientists from outside the city, and therefore able to produce various high-tech stuff etc. They could be doing their own zombie experiments, etc.

Well, I downloaded Rabid Monkey's texture pack, so I'll be looking at that shortly. Listen, I'm going away on thursday till round about tuesday, maybe even wednesday -- don't quite know yet ;)

And, tomorrow, I am getting broadband, my god when does dial-up end!!!!!!! :badass: Bare in mind that I'll be able to do a lot more then, so I can send you all my texture pack and any maps that you might want. I have some unfinished maps, like for instance a large subway, and a train exit type of thing, which I think you might find useful.

Yeah trapt is right about the city, there are lots of ruined shops/shopping centres that people had looted in the past. There can also be big trucks smashed about the place, as though the had jacknifed and toppled over or into a shop. If there are supermarkets, every shelf is practically empty -- with the odd exception of a few old boxes.

I dont think there should be the 'gunshop' cliche either. Most zombie flicks and games always have a handy gunshop, that would be too easy.
Instead, maybe the shotgun and handgun can be obtained from the carcass of a dead policeman (if the weapons haven't already been taken by others).. I'll probably be discussing these ideas with my cousin over the next few days, he will almost definately have some good ideas as he has loads of zombie/horror/stoner films to watch!

And pepper, I have two weapon design concepts I drew a while back. One of them is this sort of rifle with a long barrel, ak-47 type of clip, and just a handle.. The other is a kind of high-tech looking machine gun... Don't know how useful they are to you, but I just thought I'd mention it...

Well, the map I made (the one that has green light) is an undergound area -- the places that the Upper Hand live and control. You have to be stealthy in the game down there because they can be potentially dangerous. There isn't that many (if any) zombies in those areas of the city because the Upper Hand have cleared and secured most of the underground.

As for the HL2 or 1 arguemnet, I have mixed feelings. (I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure ;) ) Part of me goes with pepper, you cant really have total freedom - just the illusion. But another part of me stays in awe of hl2's power. In the city, there aint just a few zombies - there are hundreds. There are too many to just eliminate yourself. That's whats meant to add to the difficulty of survivng. In hl1, I have a bad feeling about its ability to handle this. Too many models for it to handle.

But anyway, garg -- a good tip:

Making cities is hard because the roads you would need have to blocked in some way. Look at the training level in Max Payne. There is a road area and a subway entrance. You don't just walk down the road to get out, you have to enter the subway. Use anything, big trucks that have jack-knifed during the chaos before the zombie outbreak, Vehicle pile-ups, barriers (millitary), fencing, etc.

in Prickly Pimple Post #42257
My topic is nothing new. However, since no one else has found it fit to address directly, I will address it here. I would like to start by discussing Prickly_Pimple's long-term goals, mainly because they scare me.

The thing I'm the most frightened about is that Prickly_Pimple's janissaries can conceive of nothing but illaudable defenses of his cantankerous warnings. Do I blame society for this? No, I blame Prickly_Pimple. His victims have been speaking out for years. Unfortunately, their voices have long been silenced by the roar and thunder of Prickly_Pimple's goons, who loudly proclaim that the kids on the playground are happy to surrender to the school bully. Regardless of those vindictive proclamations, the truth is that our national media is controlled by feral exhibitionists. That's why you probably haven't heard that Prickly_Pimple's agents provocateurs are unified under a common goal. That goal is to up the ante considerably.

For proof of this ongoing tragedy, one has only to realize that when a mistake is made, the smart thing to do is to admit it and reverse course. That takes real courage. The way that Prickly_Pimple stubbornly refuses to own up to his mistakes serves only to convince me that his idiotic claim that women are spare parts in the social repertoire - mere optional extras - is just that, an idiotic claim.

Too many emotions to count raced through my mind when I first realized that he wants to extirpate the very things I unquestionably cherish. You know what groups have historically wanted to do the same thing? Fascists and Nazis. I have no problem with the manifestly obvious statement that Prickly_Pimple exhibits an overweening sense of entitlement and a predilection for depreciating others.

I have no problem with the idea that according to the dictionary, "Prickly_Pimple-ism" is "any of a set of effusions that reduce human beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine". And I have no problem with the special privileges occasionally granted to what I call superstitious, resentful devotees of conspiracy theories.

What I do have a problem with are Prickly_Pimple's disloyal diatribes. And for those mumpish lugs who want to hide behind the argument that his lapdogs are not temperamental turncoats, but rather, truculent gasbags, my question is simply this: What's the difference? A final note: Prickly_Pimple is utterly - and I mean utterly - disrespectful.

Well fair enough. But aslong as you are absolutely sure this will work well in HL1. I suppose by doing it this way you get to test out the idea, and if it goes well the mod can always be upgraded -- I think.
