It's smarter actually. Constant turning your machine on/off stresses mostly all the components on your pc, namely your power supply. Constant Heating and cooling down is detrimental to your pc's well being. Constant warm is better.

in Is the next compo HL2? Post #77503
Ya, I really shouldn't have. And I was more complaining that I would have to buy another machine than dissappointed when it did not perform well on mine. Thought I made that clear in last post.

Anyways, my new machine should arrive early next week sometime...keeping my fingers crossed.

in Is the next compo HL2? Post #77283
Yes, I read the minimum requirements and knew it would probably run shitty anyway, but the need to try HL2 was overwhelming. Saying I hate HL2 was not correct, I'm merely lamenting that I have to spend 2K+ to buy a decent enough laptop to run it--i refuse to deal in desktops anymore. I'm looking at an HP with a GeForce FX Go5700. Should handle it, I hope.

nonags has plenty of free power tools with 0 ads. In addition to many of the good suggestions, i'd like to ad:

1. Get a good registry scrubber--regvac is the best i've seen, and it does many other things than just delete broken keys.

2. Procinfo from ALM is excellent for identifying processes.

3. Ad-Aware is superior to spybot, but not better than spy sweeper. However, you have to buy spy sweeper.

4. Startup Inspector is a neat, quick utility to identify and easily get rid of resident or junk living in the quicklaunch area.

5. If your machine was as messed up as you say it was, save your important files and format your hdd. It's a pain in the butt, but well worth the piece of mind.

I've seen this before. Here's what to:

1. Format and re-partition you're hd.
2. reinstall os.
3. reisnstal VHE.

It's the only way.

or...sorry, i've been consuming too much Red Bull. How 'bout just deleting that entity.

in Is the next compo HL2? Post #76941
HL1 forever!!!

I finally caved and bought it, but i wish i'd not.

I hate HL2 for some very good reasons:

1. Runs like crap on my computer with all settings at there lowest, and still takes like 5 minutes to load up and like 2 minutes between maps.

2. 4.5 megs WTF!!!!??!! I had to delete all kinds of porn to fit it on my machine.

3. You're restricted to playing the game with cd in-tray---shitty...

and...(flamers get ready)...

4. Nope, I won't even say it.

Kindly don't excessively stereotype ;)
Seventh, I think you would probably agree, that mappers such as yourself are the exception, not the rule. Most new mappers--myself included--behave exactly as 'Brad described them when starting out. Not necessarily spamming the vault, so much as continually asking the same bad questions, which they could easily find through the tutorial section or a google.

More than I could possibly list. Easier to say I like everything except country music.

Though, it's interesting that since the age of mp3's, I've found after downloading nearly every single song I ever liked and more,--over 10GB--I almost never listen to music anymore.

in HL2.. Who has it? Post #73662
I was holding it in my hand today, but I decided not to pick it up for 3 very good reasons:

1. Cost is $55 US -- kinda pricey right now for me
2. You have to log on to steam to play the SP game?! WTF!!!!
3. It prolly won't run on my computer anyway.

I suppose I'll be forced to buy it once everything on steam goes source, but for now, I can live without it. Screenshots look awsome though.

Uploadin' mines now. It's totally unfinished, but I think it's a good start. This is what the rooms look like where I work. Might finish this and use for compo 12, 'cause my original Idea is turning out to be tough to do in the time allotted.

Something very important! We forgot to mention about the outside area. Does it count for the room size or is it juist outside? This gives alot of oportunities...
Zoner's compile tools doesn't render the outside walls so they can be as big as you'd like 'em to be, right?

I don't think anyone disagrees that models are useful and important. If we agree to use them though, it changes the competiton. What we really need is to decide what we really want to get out of this compo.

Or, maybe it would be better that for each subcompo only one person makes the conditions. Just a thought.

in Sub-Compos Post #69970
Agrred. No Models whatsoever.

The room is so small anyway, none of us should have a problem with r_speeds. IMHO, the greatest advantage of using models, is they keep your w_polys down, which always seems to be a problem for me. Don't get me wrong, there are many other advantages and reasons for using them, but that, to me, is the most important.

in Mapping with a Notebook?!!?!?? Post #69451
I'm sure it does, but the video card is prolly mediocre at best. I mean, look at the size of videocards for desktops these days! They're freakin' huge compared to what they used to be. Hell they're basically system unto themselves. There is simply no room in most notebooks to put a powerful vid card.

in Sub-Compos Post #69441
PaLO, what do you mean by prop specs? Dimensions, w-polys, #textures?...not sure what you mean. Whatever y'all want to do for judging is fine with me. Regardless, I agree the easiest way to make them accessable--for judging or otherwise--is to throw them in the map vault under unfinished.

yeah, i had a similar idea, and barley after I got started, it wouldn't even compile anymore. Another thing I tried was taking a full size map and shrunk the whole thing down to 64?. It looked really cool in hammer, but you should've seen how many errors there were...

If you want to make your prop super-detailed, who cares. The compo description didn't say make a prop that would be suitable for a real game, it says to build the most interesting prop you can think of.

We could make the next compo an extension of this one that would set a polygon limit, include entites, and be more suitalbe for a real game.

I actually tried to make a super-deteailed prop like you and madrage are refering to. You'd be suprised how quickly you reach the max faces error. What do you think?

in Mapping with a Notebook?!!?!?? Post #69013
Not true, obviously none of you use notebooks. I have a sony vaio p4 2.66, 512 ddr. Thats all fine, but the mobility Radeon video card sux my ass. Even though it's 64mb, there is tons of stuff it simply won't run, mostly all new 3d games. It works fine for mapping though. But I guess a Pentium 2 400 mghz would work fine for hammer too.

I'm not saying there aren't notebooks out there that won't handle HL2 and Doom and such, but They are gonna be expensive.

No, but I use Impulse 101 and no clip in HLSP all the time. It does take the fun out of playing after a while, but it's nice to use say noclip if your tired of doing a stupid jumping sequence and falling to your death 50 times in a row.
