in The revival of my old project: Persona N Post #275611
I don't even want to begin to delve into the problems created by a mod team leader whose primary focus is creating the storyline for the mod, but let me just say that it's not an environment I'd ever want to work under. You run into issues with feasibility of the work involved vs desired output from the writer who has his own vision, yet can only put that vision down on paper. It takes a mapper with experience to sort out problems like this, and if you've never tried working on any projects or even attempted to create a mod on your own before you probably can't understand this.

Reading through your plot summaries, I'd like to see you try to implement some of these things you mention in an effective way. For instance, following the sounds of voices through tunnels is a really great idea, but a technical nightmare depending on how you go about it. It's stuff like this, and the creation of plot elements which you yourself have no capability to produce that makes me think you're getting in a little over your head. Your style of writing bears a stark resemblance to my own back when I had little understanding of the process involved in translating my active imagination into playable maps.

Words are so much easier to create than maps, it's scary.

U.S. Marines who are on a mission to slaughter unarmed civilians and who mow down scientists with apparent glee. There wasn't a whole lot Valve didn't do to make sure you knew that these marines were basically soulless assholes.

in Swine Flu threat and conspirations Post #275192
Guys, I already had the swine flu and I'm fine. It lasted about a week, although the cough I developed in the later stages is still with me. It's quite annoying how prolonged it is.

If they're trying to reduce population, they sure are doing a shitty job of it. Actually, if my plan was to reduce the world's population, I'd fire whoever's ass was responsible for coming up with this ridiculous master plan.

Seriously, I'd like to see some statistics of how much of the world's population has been reduced after this is all over. If they wanted to kill people that bad, they could just randomly take down some stop signs or mess with some traffic lights or something.

in Vote Freeman Post #274023
I would have voted for Snake if he was the other option. He's a way better character than Gordon, mostly because Gordon doesn't have character. He's a means by which the developers sought to enhance the immersion and atmosphere of the game, by removing his perceived presence as much as possible so the player would feel more directly involved. he isn't supposed to have personality, and I almost think he doesn't count because his existence is kind of a moot point. If he was named Scott Avalanche and went to Caltech instead of MIT, nobody would care.

Also,

All Time Greatest Character: MARIO HURMMDUMMMM

in Need help with .bsp Post #273982
You've got some stuff mixed up. You can't just "run the map", as you put it, through Hammer until it's already compiled. You're getting confused because of the Run Map dialogue box, which compiles the map and launches it in game if you wish. They aren't two separate processes. Expert mode is accessed through this compile/run map dialogue box, there's a little button on there that says "Expert" and switches it expert mode, or "Normal" to switch back. You might already be in expert mode.

BSPs are created when you compile. The BSP is the product of the compile process, it is the map itself. If you've already played any of your maps, then you have already compiled them.

I'm thinking you should read all the beginner tutorials to understand how this process works, and clear up the confusion.

in ambient generic - increase volume in gam Post #273952
The answer is pretty simple, but you won't get the effect of the music getting louder right when the door opens. If you just use an ambient_generic with a small radius set right on the other side of the door, the result is basically the same. Then have a bunch of other ambient_generics sprinkled around to fill in the rest of the room. Doors don't block that much noise, it would be pretty realistic.

Honestly, I've thought about it, and I don't think there's any other way. You can't dynamically change the volume of an ambient_generic, and you can't synch them while they're turned off either.

AVG makes me feel safe, but I don't think it's really doing anything. It just alerts me if it detects a problem, it doesn't actually do anything about it, or say if it's serious, or even give a description of it. I don't use the scanner at all because it's never once come up with any results, even when Spybot finds multiple problems in 1/4 the time.

I guess I'm unprotected, har har har.

Well, you can add GMOD content obviously, we just don't have a little icon for it or whatever. I doubt there's enough GMOD maps here to warrant it. That's pretty much the deciding factor behind a game/mod having its own icon here.

And, no offense regarding your aspirations of being a mod here, but I really don't see you around that much. At all. Just occasionally. And there's other members who I can't believe aren't mods yet.

func_walling everything that doesn't seal the map from the void and isn't used to block visibility is a good idea because it significantly cuts down on your vis compile time.
Citing compile time as a reason for something like this in 2009 is ridiculous no matter how you look at it. Oh boy, another 30 seconds of your life wasted waiting to test play a map. Who's gonna miss it?

There's no right or wrong way to go about this, and god forbid some noobie come along and get the wrong ideas in threads like these. Yeah, obviously all your tiny details, cylinders touching walls, etc. should be func_walled, but beyond that it's really up to the mapper's judgment on a case-by-case basis. If you literally func_wall EVERYTHING except the base architecture, you're not going to run into any technical problems, but you are going to wind up with a really blandly lit map. Shadows are details too, and they add more atmosphere to Goldsrc maps than people give them credit for. Yeah, I'm talking about every little shadow here, because it all makes a difference.

I know Trapt's an extremely capable mapper, but goddamn some stuff like this makes me rage nonetheless.

in shadowy players? Post #273252
It happens when you're either standing over a skybox or on top of a null brush, or something that doesn't have light data. The engine references the texture underneath the player position to determine the brightness levels of models.

I'm not sure exactly why it's occurring in your case, because I've never personally dealt with it. Does your map have leaks, is it fullbright, or completely skyboxed in to cover up sloppy mapping? This might explain it.

Definitely need to teleport the player to a dark room, otherwise you'll have brief flashes of the map between scenes, which looks especially ridiculous when the screen is supposed to be black.
"func_wall_toggle" w1 is triggered (forces no movement throughout)
You can freeze the player with a flag in cutscenes anyway, so this is pointless.

Also, Two Lane Blacktop and Vanishing Point are really good if you have the patience to digest all the spiritual/philosophical mumbo-jumbo. Or maybe just want to look at the cars.
MAD MAX!
Hell yeah. But the second and third ones kinda blew chunks, comparatively. #2 was just further exploitation of the original's chase scenes, #3 was just... yeah. It reminded me of Army of Darkness with its complete lack of respect for the original material. The only saving grace was the chase scene at the end.

I personally liked Death Proof, but I know very few feel the same way about it. It's probably just my fascination with muscle cars that allows me to sit through the boring parts. But I thought the dialogue was Tarantinoey enough to get me through it without any yawns.

Probably the best movie I have seen in a very very long time was Moon, which I made a journal post about. Thinking back, it was absolutely incredible.

My all time favorite movie is still Apocalypse Now. I've seen the three hour twenty-two minute director's cut probably upwards of ten times, once on a 2 1/2 inch MP3 player screen, and it simply never gets old for me.
