the first one, and to make them transparent, open in photoshop and delete the black, save as transparent gif. another option is to get ifranview, a freeware image program, save it as gif, and choose 'select transparent colour', and pick black.

all i have is CPU/GPU, and the one that came with my case. never overheats.
my old PC went 3 years without any case fans, and it hovered around a comfortable 50 degrees C.

anyway madcow, check if your GPU card is plugged in properly, power is connected right if it uses power, and all that stuff.

in hammer, press ALT+P
select each different problem and 'fix all of this type'
close and repeat until it shows 'no errors found' when you press ALT+P.
then, as said before, get ZHLT and point your config to use those exe's instead of qrad,qbsp, etc.
THEN, if you still have errors, post your new log here.
