That's not a good generalization El cap-i-tan.
My next door neighbors were foster parents. They took care of 3 kids on and off because they couldn't birth their own and didn't want to adopt. They were some of the nicest peeps i knew.

You don't need artist renderings. Even plain sketches would count.
Screenies, map layouts, plotlines, storyboards, basic stuff first. Then develop it.

Yeah i've went into the studio a lot. The lowest price i had was $300 for a hellova long time. I don't remember exactly what the hours were, but we got 2 songs recorded, mixed and mastered.

No, but they will work. Just wait until it's all done ;)

The top deck cannons are smaller thank the below deck cannons. Just for scaling reasons. That might change later, I don't know.

I'll have to take a look at some func_tank's to see what my options are. Because i've had a brainstorm about the cannons a while ago. Just a few things i would like to try. :)

I essentially turned about 40 brushes inside out, and now i'm getting brush out of world. :( Gotta go fix em now.

Just fixed em. :)
Turns out it was only about 6 pieces of rope. All i did was flip the end vertices around and viola!

Sidenote, turns out the crew photos i've been basing the ship off of are incomplete. In the movie the ship has 3 sails on the main mast. The actual photos only have one. I'm gonna have to put in a lot more work than i thought.

It's getting there rim :)

I have to go back and watch the Pirates of the Caribbean movies for some more reference material. I want this to be as realistic as possible. The outside is complete, now i need to make the below deck storage area. It won't be too detailed as i fear i'm nearing half-life's limits. But i'll see how far i can push it.

Notice the green player spawn. (To the rear [stern] of the ship) The ship's damn huge, and I don't think i'm even half done yet. I still have to make the brig and cargo area, plus i have to do the other tiers of the masts. The front mast is complete however.

Well what happens a lot is modders want to get all the custom content finished THEN map, and when people do that, the mod dies quick. In order for people to even pay attention to it you're going to need media releases and screenshots and updates etc etc.

If you can get a steady flow of actual maps, even just areas that connect to other areas, your mod will last a lot longer. Maybe even to completion.

For instance. If you want your story to progress from the city to the sewers to the outdoors. Make a simple city map (SIMPLE!! 4 buildings at max) add the entrance to the sewers, make the sewer map, then make the outdoor map.

Once you have the skeleton, you can flesh it out. Rebuild as necessary.

Eh. I got so good at starcraft it got boring. That's what clans do for you.
You join a clan when you're good enough, then you train against the Elite. And you become elite yourself. I went from noob to almost pro in about 1.5 years.

But then it just got to the point where i would just mess with people i was playing against online.

I'd go kill off all their workers, go back to my base, keep an patrol around the map and their area, then just sent in all 150 units. :)

Well it sounds like an awesome idea.

+ You caught my interest
++ You already have a decent website up.
+/- Like a lot of people have already said. It's a LOT of work.
Each level can take upward of 25 hours to complete, not including scripting and events. Modeling and animating is a pain. But hey, if you're looking for people to help out, i'll give it a shot.

My recommendations: Map out the whole game first, then go back and add in all the custom models, and change the levels to fit.

I know most people here are probably anti-Apple but Safari is a good browser like Opera and Firefox and really, people do use it.
Idk if it's just my iphone, but when i use safari to view the site the header is all borked up.

the "The whole half life" picture (displayed top left) is lower, and sitting on top of the search box. And when you hit the click to login button, half the password box and login button are chopped off by the pic.

What if you teleport the old barney out and a new barney in his place RIGHT after the AI_scripted runs?
(or even before, so the death animation doesn't play)
Might look funny, but if you can get the player to be distracted for a second or 2 it could be a seamless transition.

I wouldn't worry about it too much considering there's a pretty simple work- around.

If you know someone who can edit the FGD you can just change the entity names.

I'll have to learn how to animate! I was just going to make them out of brushes, and i haven't decided if i want to make the sails rolled up, or down.

But i do plan on doing the ropes.

Yeah. I'm definitly getting rid of those textures. I just need a really old wood texture of some sort. And the black pearl is black, so idk how black textures are going to be. Whatever. I'll figure something out.

Anyway. I finished the front railings, and added the front mast. But I'm at School ALL DAY today, so i won't be able to work on it until later.

It's 10:30am and i'll be here until 9:00pm, then i have a 45 minute drive home. So no updates until right around midnight or so. (Eastern Time)

well for lighting, i've heard that using spotlights for direct lighting and placing a pointlight in front of the spot for ambiance works quite well.
Throw a sprite in there and you have a life-like light source.

Make sure the pointlight is really dim compared to the spotlight.

And.... a real-time editor will be possible when half life graduates from the binary space partition. (BSP)

This is my Current project. It's a replica of the Black Pearl from the P.O.T.C. movies. I'm using the original half life textures for now. Just until i can acquire or make some of my own. There is still a lot more work to be done. For instance, i need to complete the masts, sails, ropes, cannons, brig, office area, cargo hold, keel, and the railings for the bow section.

In it's current state, that's about 4 or so hours of work.
