I think SysV was commercial (it was certainly closed source), but I know that all of it's modern derivatives are certainly both closed source and commercial. BSD was, is and always will be open source and completely free.
I'm not bashing Vista to "look cool", I'm bashing Vista because it really IS going to make things harder for consumers and developers alike. Developing hardware and drivers that work with Vista will prove a bit more difficult for manafacturers, and as a result the products will cost more, which as a result will hurt consumers, and as a further result hurting the manafacturers as their sales drop when people cannot afford their hardware. This will leave the industry in a mess.
@Rowleybob: People have cloned Windows, with a small amount of success. Check out ReactOS. I know of a couple of other similar projects in the works that will be DX9 capable.
@Penguinboy: The Doom III engine doesn't utilize a single Direct X function, it uses OpenGL, hence why native MacOSX, BSD and Linux binaries exist (infact both the Quake III and Doom III engines were native to Unix in the first place and were ported to Windows, as far as I know anyway).
@Ant: Linux != Unix. Linux is a clone of Unix, incorporating features from both SysV Unix and BSD Unix. OSX is primarily based on a small Unix-like microkernel called Mach (the name has nothing to do with Mac, just a coincidence) and has alot of code taken from FreeBSD 5 too. Windows 95/98/ME (and even 3.1) are all really nothing more than libraries and shells for DOS (much like X11 and enviroments running under it are "shells" for Unix-like systems). However, Windows NT 3.5 (Windows 3.1 with an NT kernel)/NT 4 (Windows 95 with an NT kernel)/2000/XP/2003/Vista are all based on Windows NT.
Vista is disappointment. Back in it's early days when everyone referred to it as Longhorn, it really looked rather promising, with it's innovative WinFS and supposedly brand new architecture, but it just turned out to be yet another rehash of Windows NT with some DRM bolted on (infact, Vista is also known as Windows NT 5.3, XP and 2003 being 5.1 and 5.2 respectively).
Vista is a joke, anybody who pays money for it deserves to be drowned. The only reason anybody should CONSIDER getting it is for DX10, which somebody will probably crack and port to Win2K/WinXP anyway, totally defeating the purpose of Vista.
BTW you look like a heroin addict in your av, Habboi
Seriously the weather is fucked up. There were winds around 100mph or so here a couple of days ago that somehow managed to make the power flicker a few times. Lots of trees down around here too.. though I still think "climate change" is highly exaggerated. Abnormal weather events occur all the time all over the world. The world leaders are thinking, "we have no fucking idea why this is happening let's just create a random scapegoat and scare teh nubs". -_-
The room of the idiots that believe climate change bullshit:- [========= ]
The room of idiots that don't believe in climate change bullshit:- [= ]
Yeah this post makes no sense at all. Cows smell funny. Jimmi lives in a rotating rubber chicken O.O
If you wanna get a decent boost in speed, get a WinXP MCE SP2 CD, remove all of the MCE bullshit, and all of the useless processes/components either manually or with nLite, apply some registry tweaks (disabling paging of the kernel, etc), disable every service you aren't gonna use and set ones that you might end up using to manual, install bb4win, disable explorer and get a light-weight filemanager. I say XP MCE because Microsoft used quite aggressive compiler optimizations on it to get it running faster on lower-performance HTPC's. That's as fast as you'll get Windows going without programming your own replacement Windows-compatible libraries and using them with BSD.
It doesn't make THAT much difference. Bandwidth is a little higher, clocks are a little higher, and it runs at a MUCH lower voltage, but not that much of an increase in performance.
The world is fucked, but your timescale is way off. We won't be noticably affected by the aforementioned world fucking for multiple centuries, maybe more.
Athlete is an emo, a wanker. Makes perfect sense that he's an emo wanker too. Here, have a free razorblade, cut yourself and die. It'll do us all a favour :]
I prefer mapping for HL1 myself, I don't find Source intimidating, I just find it boring. Prop alignment just kills me, I should not have to align each and every prop by the unit, the whole process takes FOREVER, and even then in-game things look wrong. Mapping in Hammer 3.x is very straightforward, create brush to size, adjust size until happy, apply a suitable texture, repeat as neccessary. Source is technically superior in all aspects, but I just don't find it fun to map for. I like the fact I can push the engine to it's limit with HL1.
Oh btw Ant, I believe GoldSrc was originally based on Quake I and elements from Quake II were gradually incorporated near the end of development.
Agreed, 150fps doesn't sound right on the system he has mentioned, even at low resolution. I don't want to be one to boast, but I get 170fps+ average on the CSS stresstest with everything maxed out using 1600x1200. AMD + ATi ftw :]
Did the update(s) help any, Ant? I went from stuttering every few seconds to a smooth framerate, appears to be a bug with the process scheduler, however it's strange that it doesn't do it on SMP systems, only dualcore systems, very odd. But the update seems to improve the situation alot.
Global warming isn't necessarily our fault, things like this occur naturally. "Greenpeace", and other global warming activists need to remove their collective head from their collective anus.
I would've suggested that your dualcore CPU be the problem, I've got a dualcore AMD Opteron and without the dualcore hotfix from Microsoft, the dualcore drivers and optimizer from AMD, HL2/CS:S seemed to lag a ton every few seconds.
Jahzel works for the government and has been sent here as a decoy to trick us into believing conspiracy theories to coverup the truth that Tony Blair is actually an intergalactic hamster with a 1mm penis and George Bush is the missing evolutionary link.
Her face tightened up as the 12 inch, pneumatic dildo sank deeper and deeper into the helpless virgin's vaginal cavity until she couldn't take any more.
