TWHL XMAS Tournament 2014

What is this ?
Well as the name suggests its a tournament, a chance to kick back before the holidays and blow a few heads off :)

What game are we playing ?
Counter-Strike 1.6

But its 2014 and Global Offensive if already out, why not it?
Maybe next time, but until then dust off your copy of CS 1.6 and get a few rounds in before the tourney.

When ?
Saturday December 20th 20:00 GMT

Where ?
The tournament will be hosted on 46.235.226.63:27015 server is located in UK so even if you are from US the ping shouldn't be horrible.
Server is open to test out the maps.

Rules ?
This will not be your standard mr15 :D
The tournament is kill ticket based 1 kill = 1 ticket. So even if you just come in and kill a few guys you can still win a prize. More tickets means more chances to win.
Whilst in game please keep your name the same as in TWHL so that we know who is who.
While anyone can join you have to be a member of TWHL to be eligible to win prizes.
And just so its out there the server accepts STEAM clients only.

Prizes ?
1. 25$ of Steam credit (Donated by Captain Terror)
2. 20$ of Steam credit (Donated by rufee)

These prizes will be drawn randomly at the end, so there will be 2 winners.

Anything else ?
Map list:
de_pizza
de_newhorizon
cs_omega_assault
de_space
de_twhl2011
awp_2tabere_v2
de_dust_thunder
fy_17b_snow_village
de_minestorm
de_racetownz

You can download the maps here:
http://rufee.eu/twhl_xmas_maps2014.zip

The server has http downloads enabled so there shouldn't be any problems even if you don't get the map pack :)

Live statistics will be available at:
http://rufee.eu/twhl.php

Tournament will last for approx 5 hours

Basement rats goes away and gets replaced by Omega assault.
de_dust_thunder - stays, because i didn't find it unplayable, few stutters here and there.
fy_snow_village - stays, only winter themed map.
de_pizza - stays, unless you got better suggestions.

Need 1 more map quick :)

Thats also a bit of a blunder on my part by not giving time to test them out, just ran through to make sure it works.

Are you proposing a map list change ?

Nothing can help the Aussies, apart from optic lines to EU.
Anyhow looking for a VPS in Britain then.

I found a little problem with de_dust_thunder, updated the archive.

New server is up at 46.235.226.63:27015 in the UK.

I propose we start at 20:00 GMT, all good or do you US guys want a bit later ?

Its the submarine network, they forgot to include the ones on land.
Well we can host it in GBR and get away with one server if someone recommends me a good vps provider quick.

Zip and Http download in the server will be provided :)

The finalized list of maps:
  • de_pizza
  • dm_basement_rats
  • de_newhorizon
  • de_space
  • de_twhl2011
  • awp_2tabere_v2
  • de_dust_thunder
  • fy_17b_snow_village
  • de_minestorm
You can download them here http://rufee.eu/twhl_xmas_maps2014.zip

Format will be classic, 30min each map, ~5hrs the whole rotation.
Also what about the US players, i don't think 200ms is acceptable so the idea to host a US server remains, we can either run the tourney on both servers at once which makes the US start somewhere after noon or we can split and do 19th for EU 20th for US ?

Yeah this is ridiculous, the 24hr idea was to give everyone time to play you don't/shouldn't play for that long.

Anyway i am calling a vote for the setup

1. 8 maps (30min each) CSDM then another rotation with classic (total 8hrs)
2. 8 maps (30min each) CSDM only (total 4hr)
3. 8 maps (30min each) Classic (total 4hr)
4. 4 maps (30min each) CSDM and the other 4 maps Classic (total 4hr)

Just to be clear are we OK with 12hrs of CSDM and 12hrs of classic ? or should we scrap that idea and go with 2 map rotations with classic and CSDM after, totaling 8 hrs (more if more maps are submitted).

Since im still planing on hosting a US server we could do 19th of December EU and 20th US.

Feedback i demand it ! :)

I will update you on the rotation when i test out the maps in the server.
No its going to be csdm ffa for 12hrs and classic for the rest.

The test server is up: 82.135.236.6:27015 go test your ping, fast download is not yet configured though.

Current map rotation:
de_pizza
dm_basement_rats (only on CSDM part ?)
de_newhorizon
de_space
de_twhl2011
awp_2tabere_v2
de_dust_thunder

I nominate de_dragos

in How can I show/advertise my HL mods futu Post #322652
The way i always thought it works is - if you build it they will come.

Basically develop your mod alone and once you feel like you have something to show for post it on Moddb etc... If you see that people are getting interested post an Ad saying you're looking for team members, if you're lucky enough you will find yourself a modeller or mapper, other specialties are hard to find as i am led to believe and coders are virtually non-existant.

More people can be found in HL2/Source field.

Its Friday and Saturday (19-20th)

Its simple 1 kill = 1 ticket, more tickets more chances to win.
Maybe adding extra tickets for plants/defuses would be more fun.

I am thinking of making 3 prizes that will be randomed out after the tourney, so more chances to win something.

Working as a Systems Administrator for a company that makes cash register software/hardware and gas station control equipment among other things. Got this job from a friend leaving.

The first few months were brutal, before i got the hang of everything and where it all was, now its quite simple. Got my own small office that is in front of the kitchen so coffee is just 5 steps away :)

We can use the ticket system like before.
I can host a EU server and rent a VPS in US (recommendations ?)

To make sure everyone gets a chance to play and win we can run it for 24hrs or so.

I really want this to happen, since it didn't last year.

I had RAID's break at work for me. Hardware controllers tend to drop drives that don't have something major bad out of the array for some odd reason or maybe to prevent write-holes. Usually its no big deal, put a new drive in set rebuild on and thats it.
If god forbid the controller breaks then you are in shit.

Tet is right you can save a lot of headaches by just going the traditional route and do frequent backups. RAID is not perfect by a long stretch and i don't really recommend running it in a home environment. If you really want to then RAID 1, but nothing beyond that.

What i mean by JBOD is 2 or more physical drives that are logically one drive (spanned), this gives 0 failover just like in RAID 0, but with no benefits whatsoever unlike RAID 0.

If you mean just having 2 physical drives connected and not spanned, then its not JBOD.

Really JBOD ? Youre just asking for it.

Just go with an ssd and a singe hdd, you won't feel the difference and it might save you from the headaches if your RAID 0 or JBOD dies.
