Or do you mean how do you make it into a .bsp that you can play?

That what you mean?

Which lights?

I like the EXIT sign, but the fire extinguisher light is a bit over the top, I thought the lighting was quite nice tbh, don't just say redo the lights tho, what do you think he should change?!

There are no models in HalfLife...

None that are worth a shit in the bushes for anyway...

What was your reasoning for not having models?

And which models do you think we should be allowed to use?

(not being argumentative, just want it all to be clear seeing as we're making up the rules as we go along :P )

I guess trapt is the judge of our second comp. What do you think, new judge each compo, only one judge for each? Could be interesting..

:( lol

Well, I can agree with 1500 (2000 was my attempt to compromise, gald you agree it's rather high - not that bad though, considering it's just an SP room)

But the models, argh, I really LOve to use models, so I'm never gonna agree with this, but yes, models have no place in a Hammer Mappign Comp, as we haven't made them, and they show none of our work, but what if we made the models our selves?

I just had an idea for the next comp, everyone gets a certain model/prefab, and we have to make a scene around/based on it, see what our imaginations can do.

Change of heart, 2000 w poly, 8000 e poly, it 'll interesting if we can go nuts, but there has to be a limit on what is created, and how much sh*t we cram into it... or we may spend too much time on it and forget about teh Real World compo :P
Just so the entries can be judged on their sticking to teh rules.

As for the models, I think we should be allowed to use whatever we want, and the rooms have to have some kind of purpose, not just static nonsense. Whether it be a computer room, or a torture chamber, something must be happening or can be triggered etc..

The rest is undefined and up to teh discretion of the mapper.

All Agreed?

What are you implying?
I'm implying alot of teh reg's have a lack of unbiasedness (man I spent ages trying to think of the right word for that, but all the weed has taken it's toll...)

1. Right
2. Good
3. No Talking, we're allowed models :D
4. Good
5. I say a poly limit must be applied, other wise the maps may get out of control, 1500 w poly limit, 7000 e poly, sound good? I mena, those are BIG lol

Well, for a start textured lighting is something you should look into.

The light maps are more complex, to give a more 'realistic' feel, you don't have to make them as complex as they can be, but if you add in all the points for light bounce, distance etc (most used to be controlled in teh compiler, but they have made alot of it edit-able in hammer now).

It's all there to make teh maps look better, and to compete with Unreal's light mapping, which let's face it, blows HL1 out the water..

Bullsh*t! (lol) You can have about 1500 w_poly and 6000 e poly before it gets unplayable and laggy, on a half decent PC, I have GF2 and Athlon1800 and my PC sucks, yet I'll be able to run that fine.

So go nuts, no-one said it had to be a perfect example of balnced mapping, as we can choose whetehr we want to do it all through a camera, or the player.

You think his is bad.... wait till you see mine =/

Like 7th suggested, try a new way of leak finding, finish teh map then worry about why it wasn't loading, I never use teh pointfile to find a leak anyway, much easier to use the Block or to fly around the outside in hammer and look for leaks.

in what will u map when hl2 comes out? Post #69704
1) Hostile Intent: Phoenix Rising mapping. MultiPlayer 4 eva..

2) A map where this big monkey comes out of the sky, and then this bomb goes off, and 3 million grunts fall from the sky, and a space ship flies down to earth, but you get to watch a small 50 minute feature film about the aliens, and then, but, yeah but no but yeah but no but, this gun comes out of your bum and you pick it up and it melts in your hands because it is a "Heat Log" and can only operate under 25 degrees celtigrade so you have to fly to teh north pole in teh spaceship and kill all teh aliens by smearing the Log in their faces and crying and moaning about how everyone cool is dead.

3) I will make a map that helps people to grow up, it will be called: A Computer Destroying Virus.

If we can have Andy or SlayerA do it that's be great, I say mods should judge if they have the time, until some reliable and honest mappers can take the time to judge.

Thanks for doing this one 7th.

Let's have another, I rushed that PC so badly it isn't even funny.
I had a little CD tray that opened when you tweaked the keyboard, and a little reefer with smoke floating up, but I got errors here and there and not having the time to fix them I just deleted shizzle and compiled it.

I'd like to check out the winning and 2nd place entries to see what beat my wonderful homage to internet pr0n. =)

And seeing as tehre were only three entires, I lost kinda bad, huh :P

What's the next compo, perhaps another useful 'fab that peeps could use, what about a large room, decorated and fully functioning with lights, and detail, teh location is your choice, the theme is your choice, any textures, but must be wad included.
The size limit is 400 units by 320 (that's 25 x 20 in the 16 unit grid size)

Sound good?

Perhaps we should even have to include our entries for this compo somewhere in this new one :D

lemme know your thoughts, if it's all good and we get replies by 9pm the compo will be due in next wednesday 9pm gmt! :P

Anyway.. I can't understand why you would ever need to use Software mode unless your PC had some kinda problem, or well.. for testing but hey, most players will use a high resolution anyway and in 99% of cases are gonna have OpenGL, just on principal..

So test in OGL or get ya PC fixed =P

in Problem Compiling Maps for steam Post #69613
Are you using Batch Compiler ? Not just compiling straight from hammer?

Try compiling with Batch and manually moving the compiled .bsp into your
Steam/Steam Apps/Your@Email(/account...)/counter strike/cstrike/maps folder.

Check the (<--) tutorials for info on Compiling with Batch etc.

in Mapping with a Notebook?!!?!?? Post #69510
Have you been listening to him?

He said that there are notebooks/laptops (which ain't the same thing btw) that will run newer FPS games, but they will cost alot of money.

I saw a ruggedised laptop for ?6,980, and it wasn't even a p4, now make up your mind as to whether it's worth it to be able to map anywhere, if I'm out I'll probably be with friends, and more than likely I'll be drunk/stoned/incapacitated and mapping will be out of the question.

I find mapping to be a very relaxing hobby that I tend to spend doing alone simply because it's one of the most boring things to watch, even if you have two people working on a map, it's still boring as smeg.

And if I had more than 3 grand to spend, I'd buy a motorcycle....
