in Your Gaming History? (Long Post) Post #235279
I started gaming when I was 4 years old. By the time I started school I was a pro at the first 20 or so levels of Lemmings on my Dad's Acorn computer.

After focusing on playing lemmings for almost a year I picked up Zool. A game which (even to this day) I never completed and probably never will. Then came starfighter 3000. This game was the first 3d Game i ever played and I fucking loved it! The feeling of freedom in its "massive environments" was overwhelming. I could blow up anything i wanted with my laser cannon. I could fly out into space and destroy an enemy mothership. I could take on enemy fighters at their own runway. I could (and did) play for hours on end without getting bored.

After a while I got my first console. The 16-BIT Sega Mega-Drive. The chunky game cartridges which stored hours and hours of gameplay were a new addiction. I played Sonic the Hedgehog solidly through the christmas holidays. Every weekend I would rent a new game from the video store in town.

Several years later I got a Playstation, and again was in awe at the graphics. I played Tomb Raider for a few weeks before I discovered Abe's Odysee which I played non-stop until I was done. Bang! Perfect timing. 1 week later Abe's Exodus was released and I slipped through another few months, gamepad in hand. Final Fantasy 7 was released and although I never purchased a copy of it myself I managed to play it from the beginning at least 10 times. I wasted several years on FF7 which is another game that I am yet to complete. Metal Gear Solid was another classic but lacked the replay value of most of my other games.

Eventually I got my own PC and Half-Life was released shortly after that. My dad had owned a PC for several years already but despite spending hours on Duke Nukem 3D and Transport Tycoon trying to make more money than a friend who lived down the street, i rarely used it. Quake came and went and I played it through and finished the lot on my dads PC.

Half-Life was the turning point. I played it and finished it 5 times and then moved to LAN gaming. Me, MNutz, my dad and my friend played Half-Life, Team fortress and sometimes Co-op played through Quake. I watched MNuTz make a few maps in Hammer and played against him on his EPIC circle map over the LAN for months on end. Then i read an article in PCGamer on developing simple maps including a brief section on scripting.

I got a PS2 and then lost my faith in consoles.

Mapping became my main hobby until I started college and finally got a net connection at home. I found TWHL on day one and since then I have worked on HL1 maps and mods like it's a religion.

I got a DS and once again lost my faith in consoles.

Now, I sit here in my own house, 2 weeks away from my 21st Birthday. I have been gaming for nearly 17 years.

Do I think I've wasted my life so far?

HELL NO!!!

in URBANEBULA'S NEW STORY. Post #235272
You know the drill, just read it and make a choice at the end.

HL2: Bitter Divergence.
Part 1

The high pitch ringing of the entryway airlock alarm cut through the deathly silence of the silos tunnel network. There was a slight pattering noise, quite a way off. The patter became a rumble and very slowly mounted up to a roar. It was the sound of the footsteps of a hundred rebels, running as fast as they could towards the entryway, the lights lining the tunnel shaking as they thundered by. They were all breathing rapidly with the weight of their gear pulling them down. The breath turned to mist in the icy atmosphere as the resistance gasped for air through congested red noses.

?Hurry!? shouted Staves from within the crowd, pushing the members in front as they steadied their pace. ?We can?t let the Merge into the facility!?

Inside the airlock, 20 Merge grunts, decked out in snow white camouflage, were packed in tight, like sardines in a can. The Merge was a variation of the metro cops, a sort of Combine SWAT team. They were at the stage above the ranks of the metro cops but still not among the Combine soldiers. They were still predominantly human, having emotions and the sensations of pleasure and pain. However they remained just beyond the point of no return. Slight biological modification meant that while they were capable of disobeying orders, they knew it was in their best interests to comply. The leader of the group had a green stripe running up the sides of his helmet and body armour. His gloved hand reached out and brushed the ice off of the keypad and punched in code. The console beeped and the door remained secure.

?Bravo report.? The radio crackled into life. ?Report your status, over.?
?This is Johansson reporting in.? The leader responded, still tinkering with the keypad on the wall. ?Entry point located and bypassed. I am attempting to bypass the second door.?
?Good. You?re right on schedule.?

On the opposite side of the door the rebels were setting up. They had overturned transport trolleys and stacked up wooden pallets in preparation a few days earlier, having defended against the Merge for 3 months already. A few of the members present were newcomers, still dressed in standard issue citizen jumpsuits. The veterans looked worse, with torn clothing and battle scars. Every so often a Merge grunt would fall with his armour intact and that would then be snatched up by a fighter in a second. Staves had a full set, none of which matched one another. On top of his faded and battered jumpsuit he had a black City 19 metro cop vest and his legs and arms were protected by combine pads of various origin, size and colour.

?Twenty in the airlock!? shouted Peterson, as he hammered away at the security console, jumping from camera to camera, searching the perimeter. ?Holy shit!? he cried ?We?ve got about fifty more outside and two drop ships inbound.?
?Ok people,? Staves climbed up onto a stack of crates and spoke with a tone only he could pull off, motivating each and every rebel in the room. ?This is the big one. You will listen to your squad leaders, Quinn and Becker. They will listen to me. I?m right here with you, and I will see to it that every single one of you will perform to your utmost capabilities. Now let?s kick some ass!?

Make a choice. Vote A B or C.
D doesn't really count.

A) W00t! Another masterpiece from Urbeh, write more! (I write, you read)
B) See above and add "Yeah, and make it a multiple choice one!" (I write, you read and make a choice.)
C) WTF is this shit!? (I don't write)
D) Mmmm...chicken (I go and eat chicken, then I come back and wait for a proper answer.)

Ok, here goes
Using Wadfile: mischammerresourceszhltwadsde_frost
bite.wad
 • Warning: Larger than expected texture (629812 bytes): 'CREDITS'
Sounds to me like you have a texture which is larger than 512 x 512 pixels. This is the limit that the HL engine can handle.
Warning: ::FindTexture() texture NULL not found!
Are you sure you included zhlt.wad in your wadpath list?
Warning: ::LoadLump() texture NULL not found!
Texture usage is at 6.05 mb (of 7.94 mb MAX)
15.02 seconds elapsed
Make sure that you have zhlt.wad included in the 'textures' tab in the 'options' screen if you have used it before in the map and then removed it. As for the NULL texture issue, you may have used the a texture from a wad file and then removed the wad from the textures list, meaning that you may still have a face or 2 using a texture which isn't actually there.
2 - Warning: Leaf portals saw into leaf
Problem at portal between leaves 973 and 974:
(2340.000 -1363.000 66.000)
(2348.963 -1363.000 66.000)
(2358.470 -1363.070 67.017)
(2357.453 -1370.740 179.000)
(2335.000 -1370.740 179.000)
(2335.000 -1368.000 138.999)
This one is pretty simple. You have a solid brush going into (sawing into) anther solid brush. Find it and sort it out. Make sure you haven't copied a wall and left it inside the original. (It happens)

If you can't get a clear idea of where this is from the coordinates it has given you, keep an eye open for 'flickering' textures. If you have 2 brushes which are exactly the same size inside one another but with different textures on each, the two textures will flicker in and out of each other when you move the 3d view. The same thing happens if you select a brush in the 3d view and see the original texture flickering through the red mask that selected objects have over them.

huff...wheeze

Hope that helps.

The blood sprite is actually white to begin with. The aliens and humans have the colour of their blood in their code.

Basically, changing the colour of sprites requires coding.

And they are for emo kid
Except limmericks. They are for Irish kid. :D

I am mouse named keith,
I circumcise men with my teeth,
Don't do it for leisure,
Or sexual pleasure,
But just for the cheese underneath.

There was a young girl from Peru
Who had nothing better to do
So she sat on the stairs
Counted her pubic hairs
Nine thousand three hundred and two.

There was a young fellow called Lancelot
Who's neighbors looked on him askance a lot
For when he would pass
A pretty young lass
The front of his pants would advance a lot.

Have you heard the sad tale of young Lockett?
He was blown off his feet by a rocket
The force of the blast
Blew his balls up his ass
And his penis was found in his pocket.

Hai Guise. Just to let you know that I am still working on concepts and stuff on my end and I hope to get mapping again by the end of October at the latest.

I am not giving up on this mod because there are a lot of cool ideas coming into the mix.

The website will be up and running at the start of November too (preferably featuring new media) so If you are officially a member of Demonic Puppy Games I'm going to need a Bio for the Team page if you haven't sent one via PM already.

Now all thats left is to hope I can dual boot this new PC with XP and Vista because if I loose hammer this mod is dead!

in ValvE Employment Post #234677
Of course I wouldn't mind applying for a job with ValvE. I would however, only do it if I met the requirements they were after. I could probably get a customer service or administration job because unfortunatly thats the only field I have "Commercial experience" in.

Rather than applying for jobs with existing games companies the only real way to get the experience they want is to start your own damn company, release some commercial games (meaning you need licensing and permission) and wait for them to buy you out IF THEY SEE FIT.

Of course, that requires a hell of a lot of patience, time and a fuck load of cash for licensing to even get noticed.

Notice how most game developers are in they're late twentys - early thirties. Thats because they've been out getting things done. You can't even pass a course in GAMES DEVELOPMENT and walk into an established company demanding a job at age 19 / 20.

They would say: "No problem, you can either fetch our mail and coffee for ?10 a week or you can GET THE FUCK OUT!"

In a nutshell: You could be a one man development team capable of crafting realistic worlds, coding top notch AI and creating masterpieces in Photoshop but no company will care unless you have been selling it for a few years already.

Indeed. You could have just kept going with your other thread and added this info there but never mind. I must say the mapping does look quite good. Its hard to pull off decent looking outdoor areas in Gldsrc so you've impressed me there. One thing I will say is make sure you get some custom skins on those models.
