... isn't really very useful for a complete beginner, in my opinion. I much preferred having a book.

I highly personally recommend this book. It would probably be a good idea to get a book on basic database concepts, too, or even an SQL-specific one (SQL being the de facto database handling language for online databases).

There's really no point. Just say "I'll buy a PC when I have x quid" and then shop around when you get there. You aim for a PC like that now, it'll've fallen in price and relative power by the time you get there.

Don't get a Dell, they've fallen hugely recently.

Are those meant to be just pound signs? Just nine hundred quid?

Get some small PC shop to assemble it for you if you don't want to yourself (although there're hundreds of guides on the 'net to building it ? plus you only learn by experience).

I'd also recommend that you go for an Athlon64 over a 32-bit Intel, plus don't skimp, well, anything. Maybe drives. Not on the power supply, though!

Make sure you get a decent sound card too.

I'm not at all sure there's any point at all in working on specs now, though. For in eight, nine months' time? Everything'll've changed. Just save up a certain amount of money and buy the best PC you can at the time.

Yeah, the VM tool is pretty superior. The only thing that the clipping tool's really useful for at all is breaking brushes in half along a line, and even that is easy to crate invalid brushes with.

What happens if you try to put stuff in? Are you saying that you can't see anything in the buyzone? If that's it, just move the camera into the block and you'll be able to see the stuff inside; you also might want to see the Visgroups tutorial.

Well, for that, all you need to do is turn any old brush into a func_wall, rendermode 'texture', render amount 0. That'll give you a totally solid invisible brush.
