Holy shit a wild Madcow appears! How you been man?

Long time no see! My engineering studies and work took over most of my spare time for the past 7 years. It's good to see that there are still some familiar faces around here.

Moo! I tried a Vive once, but that was with a program for visualising linguistics research data at uni. Was pretty cool and felt decently natural, though a bit pixely but that might have been the software's fault. Couldn't complain about the responsiveness

That sounds pretty cool! I've never tried any VR myself. I'm impressed to hear that it felt natural and responsive in any way.

Seeing the Half-Life: Alyx trailer made me a bit teary eyed out of sheer nostalgia. I've hardly even considered buying into VR, but if anything could change my mind then this is it. I've been looking for a reason to get back into mapping and this community, so this seems like a nice opportunity. But the price for a Valve Index is steep. Has anybody here tried an Oculus Rift s? If so, what did you think?

Fighting nano-suited soldiers in the original Crysis was pretty damned cool, if you can call that a mini-bossfight. However it doesn't beat many of the already mentioned bosses.
I'll never forget the moment you first encounter a mini-boss (the "Tank Commander") in Quake 2. That was scary as fuck.

It's sad to see so many old and respectable members of TWHL such as yourself to go. I quit coming here for the mapping 3 years ago, I just came here to talk to you guys. Unfortunately few of those whom I enjoyed to talk to are still here. Some remain but it's far from the crowd that it used to be.

I won't say that I will leave, I'll probably be hiding in the shadows hoping for better days, but I'm afraid my thoughts are the same as Urby's and Hunter's. This genuinely makes me sad. I've been on TWHL since I was 12, eight years ago, and I've always looked up to the people running it. Atom, 7th, Ant, Pengy. You guys have done a good job, and I'd hate to see TWHL go. But for now, as I said, I will withdraw until better times. Thanks for everything!

Edit: Oh, and if you don't mind Blitz, I'd also love to join in with the fun

Been playing The Walking Dead recently.
It's really as good as they say. The gameplay itself isn't that exciting but the story and how it changes depending on your decisions is amazing. The game forces you to make tough decisions fast, as hesitating usually seems to be pretty devastating. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good story.

It's very depressing, or at least it has been for me so far. I made a few pretty dumb decisions.

It was shit. Only Chaos Theory & Double Agent were marginally enjoyable.

Poor choice of words from my side. I didn't mean THE original, as in the first Splinter Cell which indeed wasn't that good. Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory however were pretty damn good. Played some Double Agent on Xbox, it was fine, but not as good as CT, in my opinion.

Splinter Cell: Conviction
Bought it on the steam sale. It's terrible. The controls are shit, the gameplay is shit and it's terribly unoptimised.

What happened to the original Splinter Cell gameplay that was actually challenging? Now you can literally walk right in front of people in broad daylight and they won't give a single fuck. And there are no real shadows to hide in, so instead they made everybody nearsighted and colorblind except Sam who can see just as fine in the dark as he can during the day.

I never played double agent, but Chaos Theory is one of the best games I've ever played. This however is absolute shit, hardly worth the 2.5 bucks.

I don't see how that's the same thing Striker. I mean, you say that it breaks down once it tries to understand it. I say that it can't break down because there is not enough data on it.
A real example of when science actually breaks down would be when you mix relativity with quantum physics. Or at least it used to, I'm not really read up on string theory. But that's another topic.

I believe science is a lot about the chase, and I also believe that we will never hear the end of it. There will always be a chase, and the knowledge we gather gives us the ability to do great things, like going to the moon! I'm fine with you thinking that the world is dull without spirituality, but for me all I need is the beauty of science, and the universe. It surprises me enough every day to want me to keep staying alive.

Pengy said most of the things I thought. This psedoscience is pure nonsense.

The amount of "thumbs up" on the video is frightening. As soon as they mentioned Masaru Emoto's experiments I googled it, just to find any documentary of it. but I found nothing of scientific value. A simple google search was enough to find out that the experiments were invalid.

People need to learn to be more criticising. People seem to accept anything they hear.

But science breaks down when it tries to understand HOW we do maths in our head,

Science doesn't break down, it just hasn't covered it yet. We only quite recently started understanding how the mind works, and we are making good progress. And also, just because science can't explain it (for now or never) then that doesn't mean that you can fill in the blanks with whatever you want.

I like how we contradicted each other on pretty much all points.

Can't see how you think the source entity system is harder. To me it seems to be much more straight forward. Especially when managing multiple outputs. Screw multi_managers, the source input/output system makes everything so much simpler.

Also, making architecture in Source is exactly the same as in GoldSrc. Shitty arch is shitty whether it's in goldsrc or source.

Half-life 2 came out shortly after I started mapping, so basically I started mapping for both engines at the same time. Having learned them side by side I find source much easier to map for since it has a much easier way of creating and managing entities. Also source allowed me to hide my shit-architecture behind fancy props, something Half-life didn't offer.

Creating geometry, and the other basic stuff is exactly the same as it was in the old hammer. So if you know how to map for GoldSrc, then you can definitely map for Source.

However creating mods for Half-life is much simpler than creating mods for Half-life 2. In half-life you merely created a folder and copied some dlls. In source you've got a much bigger mess on your hands. Creating custom material (such as textures, or choreographed scenes) is more complicated. But don't let that scare you off, there are good tutorials on the internet on how to create mods for Half-life 2.

In other words, mapping is easier in source, but modding is somewhat harder.

Just finished Mass Effect 3 (don't worry, no spoilers). Holy shit. I made so many poor choices. Makes me want to replay everything from scratch just to fix everything.

One thing that pissed me off was the damned Banshees. It was an interesting enemy, but too damned overpowered. It was a sufficient challenge to face off one single Banshee in hardcore mode, but two at the same time plus a bunch of other enemies shooting at you while you try to dodge those things? Come on, it was bloody impossible. I had to temporary drop the difficulty from hardcore to narrative just to get rid of them.

Also, I liked the ending, even though it didn't contain as much as I wanted it to. I haven't tried the extended ending yet, but I will, soon.

Took a break from DayZ and bought Mass Effect 3.
I played the other two and I loved them, mostly for the story, the gameplay was average. I feel the same about this game.
I hear the ending sucks but at least the ride has been fun so far

I'm playing it at hard, I don't have any problems.
Sure it's a bit hard sometimes when 5 grunts rushes you (as Satchmo pointed out) but I can live with that. I think the gameplay is pretty damn good.

I play it a lot. I usually play with a friend, who plays as a sniper, while I take care of the CQC with my M4A3

Out of curiosity, does anyone ever use the Mp5?
(I'm disregarding from the grenade launcher here, which obviously is very useful)

I almost never used it in the original, and I find I barely use it in Black Mesa either. I've always felt that it wastes to much ammo in comparison to its accuracy. I'd rather pick my enemies off slowly and accurately from a distance with the glock.
I do sometimes use the Mp5 in "panic situations" where loads of spraying in a short amount of time is called for. For example, when a barnacle grabs me.

My reaction exactly when I heard it the first time. I almost fell off my stool. It's from their album Nude, which is mostly instrumental, but really good music for just listening and enjoying. They've got another album which in my opinion is even better called Stationary Traveller. It's amazing.
