in Buying a computer... Post #166286
Hi, I'm a Maya user myself (the guy that Seventh-Monkey referred to), so let me see if I can help out.

Firstly, if you're gonna be running any 3D package you'll need at least a Gig of RAM, off the bat. 512 won't cut it. Heck, a gig barely cuts it (that's what I use, and rendering is unstable to say the least, and it's also slower due to the lack of RAM). RAM is extremely important for doing 3D graphics, more so to some extent than your 3D card.

I'd recommend getting as much ram as you can afford. 2 Gig is good, 4 Gig is ideal.

Something that is often misunderstood by people who run 3D applications is where the graphics card is used. It's not really used for the rendering (unless you purchase a specialist 3D card aimed at Maya/Max users) all that much, but is infact used for displaying the viewports within the application. You need a decent graphics card in order to keep your feedback in the viewports at optimum. The less powerful your card, the quicker your viewports can become bogged down. There's nothing more frustrating than having to wait five minutes to rotate your viewport because your card can't cope with the poly count. It slows you right up, which is bad for productivity. I use a Radeon 9800XT and, for what I do, it copes fairly well. However, I'd recommend getting perhaps the 2nd latest generation of card (due to the fact that the prices are always a lot cheaper than the latest iteration of cards, and the performance difference isn't too great). I've heard a lot of speculation that nVidia cards are better for 3D than ATI. Whilst I use an ATI card without problems, it could well be true that an nVidia card would offer me even more performance. It's something I need to look into because I'm going to be building a new 3D workstation rig this summer, as high spec as I can afford, ready for when I go to university to take a 3D-Animation degree.

However, rendering is another key issue with 3D. Noone in 3D likes rendering, it's always the downside, an uphill battle between quality/detail and render times. When rendering, 2 elements are vital. RAM (as previously stated) and your CPU. It is infact the CPU that will be the main factor that effects render times. It's the CPU that's the raw power producing those frames. A dual core CPU (or dual CPUs) are ideal for 3D. Maya will eat up all that extra power with pleasure (though I think you might need to config maya to use all available processors at render time, because I'm not sure if it sees dual cores as seperate processors or not). The amount of RAM you have basically effects how much data you can have in your scene when you go to render out. If you have too many polys, for example, and you don't have enough RAM then Maya will probably crash on you part way through the render. Which is never good. And, if you are lacking RAM, then you'll end up having to use virtual RAM, which will cause a major slow down with rendering.

Yes, your graphics card will have some play in rendering. I'm not sure exactly how much, but definately some. I think that Maya will draw on the processing power of the card for rendering, but the main use of the card, like I say, is for the real time viewport display.

To recap:
512Mb of ram WILL NOT CUT IT!
1 Gig of ram BARELY cuts it.
2 Gig is good. 4 Gig is better :)

Graphics cards aren't as important as you might think. Put money towards the RAM and CPU before the graphics card.

The CPU is important. Dual core or Dual CPUs are a definate bonus.

You might want to head over to www.3dbuzz.com and have a search through the threads there. It's a 3D focused community, of which I've been a member for a good few years (lookout for 'stevetwist', that's me ;)). There are always threads of this nature popping up, and there are a lot of people who know their stuff.

Hope this helps out. If it does then you should thank Seventh for contacting me ;)

in Modded XBox-PC-Router-SLOW FTP transfer. Post #39264
THANKS MAN! Don't you think I tried there! lol

Also, XBox's are cool. When moded. I never have to buy a game again so :P - oh, and halo looks much sweeter than it does on PC.

And yeah - sorry you didn't understand, forgot that TWHL is full of, hmm, HalfLife noobs (nah, you guys are alright - thanks for replying anyhow).

Turns out - prob for my slow sending to box was I needed a different FTP app on my PC. Now all I need is a different FTP server (Xbox side) to speed up the recieving from box.

As this post is totally useless, mods you can delete it.

BTW seventh, if you look on techguy, and many other forums, you will see identical posts to this one. I posted where ever I could, I was that confused. As it turns out, I never expected so many replies! lol (I've had about 25 so far - all but this site being useful ones! lol).

in Modded XBox-PC-Router-SLOW FTP transfer. Post #39152
Hi, firstly let me describe my setup:

I have a modded Xbox running EvoX dashboard, which hosts the XBox as an FTP server. I have set up the settings so that the XBox knows that it's IP is 192.168.0.3 (as told by the router), and that it knows the gateway is 192.168.0.1 (the actual router) and that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

I have a NetgearDG814 router. It's set up so that the XBox is assigned the IP 192.168.0.3, and the PC is assigned the IP 192.168.0.2. It has a built in hardware firewall (but only on the outgoing ADSL line), and I have ensured that the ports for FTP are open.

I have a PC running WindowsXP. It's network settings for the LAN are set to recieve all IPs automatically (as the router tells the PC the IPs).

All network cards in the PC, Xbox and router are 10/100Mbit cards. All cables are 10/100Mbit. Windows XP is recognising the network as a 100Mbit network.

Here's the problem:

As the xbox hosts itself as an FTP, I can connect to it from my PC. I just use an FTP app (I use FlashFXP in this instance), and tell it to connect to the IP 192.168.0.3 (the XBox), and set the user name and password to those that I have chosen in the FTP settings on the XBox.

I can connect, I can see all the partitions on the XBox HDD, I can transfer files back and fourth. However, I'm getting transfer rates of 70k/s sending to the XBox, and 20k/s recieving from the XBox. This is far slower than I should be getting with a 100Mbit LAN. (All HardDrives, to my knowledge, are 7200RPM).

So, I decided that I couldn't stand these slow speeds any longer, and attempted a direct link setup (no router, just cable from PC network card to XBox network card). I changed the settings on my PC and Xbox, but couldn't get a connection between them. A little down heartened I decided to set my settings back to exactly what they were before, and put the router back into the network.

I was amazed! My transfer rates had increased to 6Mb/s!! And yet, my settings were identical, I couldn't believe it!
However, it was short lived, as soon as both machines, and the router were all turned off, and I switched them on the next day, my transfer rate had dropped back to 70k/s and 20k/s.

This leads me to believe, seeming as I didn't fiddle with any of the settings on the router, that it might be a setting in WindowsXP or on my XBox causing this slowness, and that, it wasn't updated until after I rebooted.

I'm really stuck with this - I need faster transfer rates as I'm sending Gigs of data back and fourth, and so it takes hours instead of minutes.

Can anyone please help me understand why I am getting slow transfer rates, or help me fix the problem????

Thanks.

in compo, im restless for a compo Post #30278
I will definately enter - reason I didn't enter this time was due to those things called exams - and how they're kinda more important than Half-Life (or am I wrong about that? lol).

I'm also working with Seventh at the moment on a series of video tutorials (I'm doing tutorials for Conitec's 3dGameStudio and he's doing them for Hammer) - don't expect anything too soon - but there's a little teaser for you.

Now to leave you in suspense.............

Guys - this is nice an all - but wasn't the point of the post - thanks kol for the sensible (not) answer - which deserves the phrase "No sh** sher...", so anyone know when the next compo's gonna be? and what subject? Cos I'd really like to enter - oh, and BTW, I think Andy's more incharge that 7th - cos 7th didn't know that you guys even thought he was - he is a moderator though - lol.

Hi all, shameful to say I missed out on the latest contest - that'll teach me for not visiting TWHL enough (crappy school revision - crappy GCSEs).

So my question is, probably to atom, what and when is the next planned contest? Cos I'd love to enter the next one - I might even enter this one - but I gotta submit it today! lol - oh yeah '0' days to do a compo - would be a laugh - even if totally outrageous! ROCK ON!

in Trapped Compo - I won but no trophy is i Post #287
Yo dude! (Seventh_Monkey), you change your name on IRC like the moon changes shape (I know the moon doesn't really change shape, it's all the effect of the shadow of the earth blocking the light of the sun on the moon!), so what if my spelling is abomalitical! (Probably spelt that wrong! LOL) and I change it from time to time.

From now on I will spell it as Trophy, and not Trophey or Throphy or even Throphey! LOL - If I did say Thro### that was a typo so, cut it out dude!

May I just say, that seeming as you have the trophy in your cabinet (it was a joint effort by the way) I can uderstand you not wanting me to get it!LOL

I hope you all know I was just kidding (above about being mad) I am not really mad (I'm extremely mad - lol), no no, seriously I just wanted to be acknowledged for my work!

See you around Seventh!

Yeah, I did like your map vassy, but ummm, I did use god mode second time over to get to the end - I am a bit of a cheater - LOL.

Still no sign of a trophey - well I'll be damned!!!

Atom, if your reading this, please understand that I would only like the trophey so that I can say - look - I won this compo! It doesn't have to be all technically linked does it??

Anyway - thanks All

Goodluck Vassy with mappin, if you carry on at your age you will be awesome in a couple of years (my age)!!!

Hi, this message is mainly for atom.

Hi Atom, as you know me and Seventh_Monkey entered the trapped map compo as a joint entry, and well, won!!

I am very pleased that you included both our names on the winners page, but (and I hope not to sound picky) Seventh_Monkey has the tropy in his trophy cabinet (under his user) and I don't.

I was wondering if it were possible for both of us to have that trophy, so people can see that I won if they look at my stats!

Thanks, hope you can help,

HELP! I want to make a NPC walk through a series of scripted sequences (down a hall, round a corner, down another hall) but when he reaches one scripted sequence he stops for a second, then carrys on.
I want it to be fluent, move through one, to another.
I'm using trigger_once to activate the next scripted sequence
I'm trying to use it for a cutscene
