Boredom + slow internets = time for another of my pointless community surveys!

DAE actually use a custom steam skin, or is everyone still using the bog standard steam skin?

I've been running the default skin since 2004... but I recently switched to the Steam Minimal UI v3.9 RC2 skin, and must say I am much preferring it to the standard bloat.

Anyone else got a skin they recommend?

Aww, Poor Scotch. With two entries he was a dead cert for a copy, then along comes Instant Mix and steals it away from him.

Atom, I already have you on steam, but I.M., you'll need to PM me your steam username.

Sorry Scotch, better luck next time.
If it makes you feel better you can blame the seed used in my PRNG. ;)

I've been sitting on two pre-release copies of AirMech (http://store.steampowered.com/app/206500/) for a little over a week now, with no idea what to do with them.

Now normaly my SnC buddies get first refusal on my spare games, but I doubt AirMech is the kinda thing they'd play.

So I'm offering them up for a free raffle to the community. (aren't I nice?)

Let me know if you wan't a copy and I'll put all the names in a digital hat and pick two winners at some point after tomorrow lunchtime (depending on when I'm next online).

in Adding Weapons to Goldsrc Post #309495
Adding new weapons in goldsrc is easy, as long as you don't do something derpy like compiling the cpp into the wrong DLL (...don't say anthing archie :P).

It's mainly just a case of copying the code for an existing weapon, changing the variables as appropriate, and recompiling the DLLs.

You'll need to get hold of the source code (go for spirit over vanilla imo) and a copy of visual c++. Visual c++ 2008 express is a free download, and there's a spirit download on moddb specifically for it.

C++ knowledge is recommended before you go messing with the source code, but not essential as it's mainly just copy-pasting.

When you get stuck into the source code, feel free to drop me a PM if you get stuck.

in Icons and such Post #309170
Goldsrc is limited to the 16x16px icon.
If you want the 32px icons you have to use source, sorry.

to change the menu interface colors requires taking a copy of ClientScheme.res and changing the RGB values for the relevant sections. Then I think you save it as "TrackerScheme.res" in your mod's resource dir.
Effectively, you're running a custom Steam theme within your mod.

It's been a while since i last did it, and I'm at work atm, but if your still stuck later I can have a look in more detail for you.

oh, and FYI. The icon on your start bar is the icon of the hl.exe executable, and can't be changed. Most people run the game fullscreen and wont see it anyway.

in your liblist.gam, add a key value pair of "icon" and it's relative path from your mod root.

It must be a 16x16px TGA.

Hope that helps.

in Slow Internets are slow Post #308162
Morning all,

Boredom setting in now as I wait for my 900k internet to finish updating my steam library before I can play anything. Can't even pull down the latest revisions of The Core and keep working on that... that's how crap my d/l speed is.

Openreach are (apparently) upgrading all the cabs here to fibre... but they seem to have missed mine. according to last years leaked rollout docs, my cab was due to be upgraded to offer FTTP if we paid extra for it. maybe that's the hold up.

Just wondering what the average net speed is amongst us lot (and yes archie, you're going to sway the averages so shh) and if anyone knows of a provider that seems to consistently offer faster connection than most.

Follow up film to the awesome Firefly... not as good as the series, but good nevertheless... apart from killing off main characters kinda shoots down any talk of a second season.

ok, so you're adding frag points on kill.

what's the context?
what are you trying to achieve?
what's the error you're getting?
Is it compiling but not doing what you want, or failing to compile?

Heh, already got a raspberry pi on backorder, not sure if it's suitable really.

Budget is cheap as possible, I've got plenty of parts kicking about, but all spare cases are brutish tower cases with massive fans (ex-gaming PCs) - not really small quiet and cute enough for the missus to accept sitting in the living room.

Penguin, you've sold me on XBMCbuntu - I love the desktop app, just never played with the OS version. I suppose a usb3 external drive would still be pretty nippy with I/O speeds.

I'm liking the ISK case, might have a hunt around see what parts I can salvage that would work with the mini-ATX boards (what board you using out of interest PB?)

You know what, just make your journal post and I'll flick through ;)

Right, advice time.

I'm looking to build a new media centre as cheaply as possible so I can stream my music and video around my house.
User posted image
I think it's a pretty fair bet I'm going to be running XBMCbuntu as the OS but hardware wise I'm open to advice.

Ideally I'd like a NAS server attached to a lightweight, silent machine for the conroller - but as I said, I am budget limited.
User posted image
I've been looking at the Acer Aspire Revo Nettop as a thin, silent centre instead (obviously changing the hard drive for a faster, bigger one) but I've never been a big fan of Acer's build quality.

The downside of this is that I'd still need an independant bluray/dvd player should I want to watch discs that I've not ripped to mp4

Anyone done anything similar and have any ideas?

TrueCrypt

Since I'm talking about high amounts of data, possibly leaving only a quarter of the flashdrive with free space, is this going to slow a lot the transfer speeds?
I use TrueCrypt on my flash drive, and I swear by it.

Effectively you have a TrueCrypt container on the drive, alongside a portable copy of the software which mounts the container as an additional drive on your pc.

It makes use of parallelization and pipelining, and so the I/O speed is negligibly different to that of an unencrypted drive.
