And Google is your friend too.

Check out akilling.org. I think there's tutorials for both HL and Source there, but the tutorials will give you an idea of how to achieve different things no matter the engine.

ZombieLoffe: We'd both be quite pissed if we bought a game only to discover that the CD-key in the box already was in use by some moron who though it would be a good idea to steal the key rather than buying the game.

Can't really see the point of such a thing. It would be both inconvenient and time-consuming.

So, Jeff, what's this map you're working on? :)

Well, it's not odd that Afrikaans is similar to English since they have the same origin (indo-european), although I can't speak for what has influenced the language in modern times.

And welcome Jeff :)

I got to admit I like this interpretation of the song Dragostea din tei better.

Searching it up I also found another interesting interpretation that made me laugh a bit (especially the gnome part), although it's a flash video.

I suppose it won't be funny for everyone, but here in Norway that song was a summer hit two years ago - and they played it on radio A LOT (which was a bad thing)!

You got to go into the archives and search for strips related to 'Wintereenmas'. Even after checking into that, I'm still just as clueless as to what it actually is, though.

Yeah, this became a bit off-topic, so I'll comment a bit on 'The Urban Project'.

The models look good, and grey might fit the theme nicely, especially if this is a somewhat torn and shattered world. Just work hard on the atmosphere, so it doesn't become dull.

About the setting, it sounds great. I'm a huge fan of FFVII, and Midgard was a fantastic city. Combining that great setting from FF with Half-Life gameplay can become quite interesting.

It wouldn't hurt with a bit more information on the story and characters etc., though

Saco: I really don't blame you for your opinion, considering that people probably look at the matter in a completely different perspective in Turkey. Thus you are also unfluenced by those completely different values and norms.

I do find it sad that people are beaten up merely because of their nature, though. I respect your culture, but that kind of prejudice and violence is provoking.

My opinion is that homosexuality is not wrong at all. Even in the old Athens men often had close relationships to other men. And such things have repeated itself through history, both with acceptance and refusal.

That we are created as men and women, and have different sexual drives that fit with each other, doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be that way. Remember, there are no rules without exception (and such exceptions are just as right as what is "normal").

And how can you be so sure that God has meant this and that? Don't we have free will? Are we not individuals that are able to find our own way of life? Open up, think for yourself - detach from whatever cultural-based values you have, and try to look at the world from a different perspective.

Anyway, this is becoming a bit too off-topic. Someone should start a new topic about this in General Discussion. Or I might do it later on. It's quite interesting to discuss.

And I might get around to comment on what this thread is really about, too.

Got to agree on the "pink-issue". To be honest, I have a hard time understanding what pink has to do with homosexuality, and why both are used in a negative way.

There's nothing wrong with pink and there's nothing wrong with homosexuality. Grow up, people!

Well, one should be able to both speak and write ones first language properly, at least.

It's not that much work either. Writing and reading once in a while will certainly improve ones language skills, and it's entertaining and creative as well.

Learning another language can be a bit harder, though, and if it's not for you then that's okey. You don't have to pursue it. Still, in general, I think learning English should be compulsory (in non-English countries), considering that it's such an important and international language.

A few mistakes doesn't matter, of course.

Reminds me of the cylinder from the book Rendevouz with Rama, although Rama was flat on both the top and the bottom. I'm guessing it's some kind of vessel or ship. Submarine has already been mentioned, and that's my guess too.

Habboi: Norwegian is my first language, and thus English is my second language.

I've also had classes in German, but I lost interest after a while (not too odd, considering I was 14 years old and quite immature).

Now I've got classes in Spanish, and I'm thinking about learning Japanese in the future (if I find time for it). I've also got a book about Maltese in my bookshelf, bought during a vacation on Malta, but I'm unsure whether I'll actually pursue that :)

Anyone else that's interested in language here?

Although I've noticed that those who get the names wrong are from a non-English country it's really not that hard to get it right. A major name like Gordon Freeman is mentioned throughout the game and also written (in the start), if I'm not too wrong. In addition you really can't miss the name when browsing most Half-Life related sites.

Anyway, this thread isn't supposed to be overly serious. Still, all those mistypings makes me wonder a bit :)

(This isn't directed at anyone special, and is not meant to offend.)

I've been at this site for a short while, reading regularly in these forums, downloading maps and so on. During this period I've come to notice that a lot of people in general are having a hard time getting certain character names etc. right.

Personally I find this very disturbing, and therefore I think it would be fitting to give a small crash course of how to type a Half-Life character name right:

The main character's name is GORDON FREEMAN.

Not gordan or gorden, and not freemen or fremen (which is a term from the great novel Dune). And if you're going to write a name, remember CAPITAL letters in the start of both first name and surname, like this: Gordon Freeman.

I hope this settles the matter once and for all, as I've been crying myself into sleep lately because of this horrendous misuse of both the English language and Half-Life terminology (and how hard can it actually be to get this right?).

If anyone else has other common Half-Life typing errors that should be corrected, please educate the world in this thread. After all, the outcome would be horrible if everyone went about and used wrong computer game terminology. And we can't have any of that.

in Playing mods in HL Post #156865
I guess this should be simple, but I can't figure it out:

When playing mods for the original Half-Life, back in the good old days, it wasn't worse than putting the mod folder into C:SierraHalflife and activating it in custom games.

However, when using Steam I really can't figure it out. It seems that the mods need to be configured rightly to become listed in the Games list. Thus, putting the mod folder in the C:SteamSteamAppsuser@jalla.com.. etc. folder won't work.

Any tips? Or do have to run HL as I used to earlier?

in Goodbye. Post #156561
This isn't about creating levels or mods. This is about expectations and motives, and what eventually is the force that moves the self within us. And you've just discovered the complexity of this drive.

The problem with being an individual in a world with a population of six billions is the feeling of inferiority that might appear at times. It might all seem very meaningless, since there isn't any set purpose, nor reason for a life. Nothing is as destructive as discovering that ones life seems pointless.

But that's something we've got to confront and handle. It's a matter of redefining one's expectations and understanding the possibilities and limits of oneself. We can't all be world champions in every aspect of life.

So, first off, handle your expectations. Lower them. It's obvious that you've got ambitions, and I don't doubt that you might have what it takes to fulfill them. Still, you can't take more than one step at a time.

Then, change your motives. When you write that you want to become a known worldwide for accomplishment or creation, it's a huge undertaking driven by a egosentric force in which you as a individual want to bring attention to yourself. You've got to remember that this can be done in many ways, maybe even ways that you weren't aware of yourself.

Just being a part of your community means a lot and feeds that egosentric drive. To be a friend doesn't take a lot of work or skill, but merely initiative and contact - and it will do the same for you as worldwide recognition.

To be a part of something and to primarly be on the transmitting end instead of the recieving end will be far more rewarding that any kind of world recognition. You should feel happy with yourself because of what you do for others - not what you do for yourself. The recognition you're looking for will materialize within yourself - thus look for it in yourself and not in others.

So you've got to ask yourself: What makes you happy?
  • To maintain an interest at a level in which it meets your expectations.
  • Being a part of a community or a social network; contact is a keyword.
  • To be on the transmitting end and not the recieving.
Well, that's the outline of my theory, anyway. I haven't got the time or energy to actually explain the complexities of life. And what I've written above will of course vary a lot from person to person - it doesn't even fit me, but I try (let's be realistic, there's nothing such as perfect harmony, peace etc.). There are many variables to consider, and it's hard to get control of all of them, but there's something far more rewarding out there than worldwide recognition.

You should also check out Abraham Maslow. His theories on human needs might clear up some things for you when you try to go somewhere with your life.

Good luck with life. It all has a reason and purpose, but it's up to you to find both :)

I see this too in all maps I play, including the original maps and maps made by others (i.e. it appears in MINERVA: Metastasis).

Maybe it has something to do with the graphical configuration? My computer isn't top notch, so I'm playing it with a medium/low configuration.

in Starship Troopers Post #156539
It's a nice idea. The hectic battles of the movie can work out pretty good in a game (Although it is somewhat illogical that the soliders run into the hordes of enemies without any supporting artillery or bombardement. I guess the exoskeleton from the original book would have fixed that. Too bad that it wasn't included in the movie).

And Starship Troopers is a memorable movie, quite entertaining, although not all good. I think a game was released recently, too, but it was bad according to the reviews - and I don't think I'll look further into that.

Good luck with the work :)

Anyone else experiencing problems with the 3D view? I'm only getting wireframe, and even that isn't working too well.

I've removed "-beta sdk" from the Steam shortcut and I've refreshed the SDK contents. I've also checked the gameinfo.txt files, and everything looks like it should.
