This isnt a mapping question but i figured that this woould be tyhe best place to thread it....

I have numerous bugs with HL2 and i was wondering if it was just me.

1. The flashlight doesnt work properly. Only models get lit.
2. I cant change any advanced graphics options or the game crashes.
3. This results in more crashes when my poor 64mb graphics controller 'canny handle it'

any help?

My mate had the exact same problems and he figured out that it was his crappy GFX card which was busted so he got a brand new one.

It's teh card -> 64mb for HL2 is bad.

(Do any 64mb cards even support dx7+?)

my geforce fx 5200 works just fine and supports dx.9

i have a 64mb Dell Graphics Controller built into the motherboard.
It supports 9..

I have a 128mb Athlon something or other graphics card but my DELL (OH FUCKING BRILLIANT DELL) only has PCI slots...

do you know if they still make modern cards for PCI?

I have the same as you, The controller only supports DX7 for HL2, what your problem may be is your memory, doubling your memory could be more worthwhile than buying a flash graphics card and also a lot cheaper but if you do want a graphics card they do plenty of PCI graphics cards although their mainly Nvidia cards, as theres not many ATI pci cards.

There's no point in buying a PCI graphics card. Buy a proper motherboard instead.

Check for compatibility with the rest of your system if you do replace it... learn from your mistakes ;).

In my opinion, I would not buy a new motherboard. AGP (acellerated graphics port) motherboards cost quite a bit more than a regular PCI board. There are also PCI Express graphics cards out there which are just as efficient as AGP. If you do decide to go for a new motherboard, don't go straight into it (like I did) as much consideration for aspects such as compatibility, power demands, processors etc.

I personally would (and will) go 64-bit at this point in time, probably with PCI-E too.

PCI Express cards do NOT work in a PCI slot. They are a completely different thing. PCI-E is pointless right now unless you want to use SLi since there is no consumer card availible which can take advantage of AGP 8x's bandwidth!

... or CrossFire, fool :P, or people who intend to be more future-proof.
