Its still nice to see really good loking models for 1.6. Especially for those who's computer can't handle the Source engine (dont start on crap like "well if they can't handle Source how can they handle the models?" bceause most of the models are around 2600 to 3100 polygons. So blah.

But this also means. Woot! A WAVE OF CUSTOM CS MODELS WITH SOURCE ARMS!!!
Posted 19 years ago2005-06-13 03:39:26 UTC Post #114043
True, but we're getting into the day where anyone's computer can handle Source at some setting, and if they can't, it's time for a (probably cheap) upgrade.

Um, i dont want to kill your idea wc dude, but afaik the hl engine polygon support on one model os 2048. So i dont think they got 3100.

and what about online playing? 4 players and cs would crash deu to having a to high e_poly.
Posted 19 years ago2005-06-13 04:20:12 UTC Post #114052
I bet they're lower poly for w_ models and p_ models, and v_ models aren't drawn for everyone, only a client.

I'm sick of poeple saying crap like this, the HL1 engine can take any polygon count as long as the person's computer can keep up. These models are very high in polygons and so are most other custom skins. And there were no w_ or p_ models included.

Im pretty sure this info is correct, since i got it from wolf(verc forums), and he is already modding the hl engine for quiet a while. He knows quiet a lot about modeling so im pretty sure the info is correct. I wonder how they did it.

OK well I have no idea why anyone would think that Half Life will mess up if you are using a model that has more than 2048 polygons, but I had Milkshape for the 30 free days and hacked 3 models, a shotgun, a crowbar, and a 9mmAR. The shotgun and 9mmAR were bother well over 3000 polygons, but if you don't believe me:
http://www.svencoop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27791
And if thats not enough proof
http://www.banana.nu/?section=viewitem.skins.skin.main.352
There's a model with over 10,000 polygons.
Also, almost all CZ models are over 2048. I know you are a modeller so I know that you must know a lot about the Half Life engine, but it just doesn't make sense why anyone would think that HL would crash or something if the model's polycount is over 2048, no offense, but it just doesn't add up.
Posted 19 years ago2005-06-13 15:58:24 UTC Post #114197
It makes sence that the hl engine has limits, as you know a texture limit as a multiple of 16.
Posted 19 years ago2005-06-13 16:02:27 UTC Post #114200
Yeah, WCD, that's nonsense. The HL engine is based on the Quake engine. It has limits, and 2048 is a pretty reasonable-sounding value for such a limit, being 2^11.

Yes, and engines usually crash when you go over their limits.

Why don't any of you believe me when I say that you can use models over 2048 polygons!

I believe WCD!
I have had vast amounts of stuff coming up on screen...My computer can handle LOADS!

I own gun models which are crazily high!
That CS gun is over and yet it still runs :/

So I agree that there is a limit yes, otherwise you could have ultimate graphics and detail. My point being the limit isn't THAT low so :)

Here is wolf:
the limit is a bit tricky as it depends on the vertex edge number more then the actual poly number, some of the limits can also be broken by altering the studiomdl.exe so braking the limit might be very posible in the end.
There we got it, makes sence to me.
