I cant say i have a alltime favorite, i play all sorts of games, i got a rather expensive flightsimulator set wich i from time to time hook up to a race game.

Flight simulator 2004, mostly VFR and IFR, training a lot in the choppers lately.

Il-2sturmovik : Forgotten battles. Yes, i like to be violent up there.

Bf2 : excellent teamplay.

Half-life : anyone?

From what I've read, it's short (only about ten to twelve hours of playing). That's just too short to spend $50 on. HL1 and HL2 are much longer. It took me weeks to beat each one.

A bit short yes.

HL2, Long??
Took me 8 hrs to beat HL2 :

Besides, F.E.A.R is much better than HL2

There are people that finish Hl1 in 1 hour.

Yeah, but only after playing it hundreds of times.
Took me 8 hrs to beat HL2
Not too many people can say that. You're just good. I never counted hours, but it took me weeks to finish HL2. Granted, I only played an hour a day.

All i can say is that if it takes weeks for you to finish hl2, then it's going to take weeks to finish fear as well :)

Well I never beat Hl1 in an hour even after playing in it 6 times! :D I'm not that bored! :P

While we're on this discussion of best games, what's the best AI in FPS games?

Half-Life or Half-Life 2 definitely don't have the best AI. FarCry has pretty decent ones. I heard F.E.A.R. has relatively smart AI. Quake 4 AI sucks doodoo.

FEAR... is alright. It sorta looks nice, the AI is good, the level design is poor, it's not very well optimised, and it's kind of repetitve. It's fun, but not scary at all.

And the shadows are massive nub.

And yes, I've heard it is short (I've not completed the whole game yet). People are saying 7 hours on the FIRST RUN. That's pretty hopeless, IMO.

Fear is good, yet short. personally I havn't played through anything but my nice demo yet, but ive played through that about 20 times and am sure im going to put a least 20 or so hours into fears single player game, playing with using perfectly timed slo-mos to perfect each room. like that room at the bottom of the stair well right after you get the Particle gun, i still have lots of fun beating that perfectly.

And the AI is superb.

mapping is not really repeditive when you think about it. Id say its what is called Realistic repedivness. your in the same locall the entire game, so its not like any huge changes would be expected if this were a real area.
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-23 03:27:41 UTC Post #143072
Dude, you're judging that on a 15 minute demo?

The gameplay is repetitive. It's the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. LOOK AN ENEMY!! SLOW MO!! HE IS DEAD!! OMG THERE ARE LIKE ONLY 2 TYPES OF ENEMY IN THIS GAME, HOW GOOD IS THAT!!!?!?!

The level design is repetitive, blocky and boring. There are times where you get a sense of deja vu - you think you've been in the area, but you haven't. It just looks exactly the same as 10,000 other areas in the game.

The game is (really) poorly optimised. Most of it is set in very small, close-quarter areas, and yet it lags. I've had no lag issues with any other game, including HL2, Far Cry and BF2 (all being run at max settings), yet FEAR manages to lag the crap out of my pretty decent rig.

The game is not scary. It tries hard, but it's just not scary. After a while you come to expect what's going to happen next, and the game loses whatever atmosphere it had. Also, the game tries to be atmospheric and scary, but all it is is dark. Doom 3 anyone?

The shadows are horrible. They are so freaking sharp, it really takes away from the immersion (you might say 'pfft, they're only shadows,' but believe me). Even with soft shadows on (which gives you a HUGE performance hit), the shadows look worse than HL2s. They're just really shit.

Luckily, the AI is pretty good. They'll work together to try and hunt you down, they'll dive and jump and pull props to take cover behind. It really helps with the immersion, but even the good AI can't save the game.

Having said that, if you liked the demo, you'll probably like the game. The demo had 15 minutes of gameplay, the game has 7 hours (lol) of the exact same gameplay (sooo repetitive).

Don't let this discourage you though. The game isn't THAT bad. It just isn't good. It's.... just ok.

Nah, it's all scripted. Combines are born dumb.

How smart do you think they'd be after they went through the "combinization" process in the Citadel?

I wouldn't say combines are born dum. If i was in the process of making a human into some hybrid warrior i wouldn't make him/her dumb.

Madcow, a real AI does not excist on cuncurrent system, unseless you buy a NASA computer.

The AI these days excists of actions. The only thing the AI decides is what action to chose. Its build up in a tree structure like this:

AI sees player |----> Move| ---->shoot
|                 |---->move
|---->stand still|----> move
|                     |---->shoot
|----> run|---->run
              |---->shoot
Obvioulsy there are hundreds of more decisions to be made in games.
