Sorry, it seems like links are common on forums; but for some time now, I have made a attempt to make a living out of the game industry as an independent developer. And so I bring to you 3rd Age Games; a way to transfer my rough machine code into something I hope to get by with.

So for, I've built a simple 2D shoot 'em up called 'Fort Defender' (nope, it sucks before you ask) and have gave it away as part of a shareware package given away to small time publishers. Learning from my mistakes, my next project is being built on a fully 3 dimensional engine (thanks to the coding platform 'Blitz 3D').

Oh yeah, and I'm not in a spamming rage adding my link to many forums without second thought; I know the people of TWHL are a community of open minded mappers, who understand the toll of building an aspect of games (yes, I do mean mapping!).

Am i forgetting something?, oh yeah, the link is: http://3rdagegames.150m.com/INDEX.HTML

So if i understand you correctly you want that someone would map for your game?
By the way VERY slow host :)

Oh and get rid of the 3rd Age games text it's hard to read because it blocks text.

Hey!, I didn't say I wanted someone to map for me. I'm just a poor attention whore in a cruel world.

I was referring to this part :)
yes, I do mean mapping!

Word of advice: If you're going to be an independant developer, try to put some money away for buying your own domain. You'll seem more professional that way. At least that's the way I see it.

wtf is wrong with the website? Its all screwy...

i bet it's designed for IE. Looks fine in it.
Use firefox. Don't use IE, it's GAY.

The ads and background are hideous, and the central images 404. It's bad practice to use all-capital filenames.

Christ, I get the idea the site's shitty!

Like I have enough money to buy a domain, I already spent $100 for the Blitz 3D engine! :P

And, SpaG, I'm cool with mapping; don't plan on the scenic route for my next project, not that it wouldn't be damn useful to have a few good men aboard my crew

Well, I do know there are some sites that offer domains/hosting packages for at least $3 a month.

lol, really, I don't mind the domain I'm using at the moment.

I can't be arsed to go through the process of adding all my frontpage extensions to a html uploader. Yeah, I'm that lazy, lol :
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-01 00:37:00 UTC Post #155563
Uh, write a simple site in html. It's better than that, trust me.

Anyway, can't comment on your projects or any of your work since your site isn't working. There're no links to screenshots, builds, renders, you name it. Nothing on that site works. You should really fix it up before 'going public' :) .
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-01 15:47:52 UTC Post #155669
spymac.com/hosting. $7/month, and you get loads of good shit. Just check it out. (and a free .com domain)
I can't be arsed to go through the process of adding all my frontpage extensions to a html uploader.
You can't do that without special permissions on the server to install software.
Uh, write a simple site in html.
You shouldn't even be using frontpage unless you know HTML so you can fix frontpage's coding.

Enough about the site, what about the 3D engine game you are making?
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-01 17:30:35 UTC Post #155693
"Enough about the site, what about the 3D engine game you are making?"

Well, I'm glad you asked :). The concept is to make a noir title that would seem both as a film and your average video game.

To go into detail, I would mean noir such as Max Payne, only, the storyline would seem similar to Max Payne (no, this isn't another repetition of a man losing his family; the situations are completely different). The setting is a different story; it revolves around fantasy.

There still are many problems facing the project: I plan to add a sense of humor for good balance - not a good idea in noir video games, It must not contain foolish cliche's - noir video games have been done once before, The storyline must make up for the poor quality models - I'm good with story lines just it has to give you the same feelings surtain video games give you.

One more thing, is it the website that really is the bad point of my decision of becoming an independent developer?

I know it's bad, and doesn't seem professional. But really, do you think small time publishers at first glance judge because of your website?. I plan to create a small tech demo (including models, maps and aspects of the game) aswel as a document containing the positive sides of gameplay and aspects of the game that are new and refreshing.
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-01 18:59:16 UTC Post #155711
Well, the website being virtually inaccessible and impossible to navigate, I'd say that makes a huge difference.

Any screenshots?

Also, for future posting: please use the [edit] button.

But really, do you think small time publishers at first glance judge because of your website?.
They judge you on much more than just a website, but if the first impression of your website fails (which it does now), I hardly doubt if they're going to take a look at any of the other factors, given the amount of people that want to create games...

Selling games depends on a lot of factors. Like gaining the trust and confidence of others, the presentation of your game, the way you act... they all multiply. If one of these factors is 0%, the sale doesn't happen. If one of them is 10%, the resulting change will be at 10% of what it could've been without that factor. It doesn't add up, it multiplies, so you'll have to pay attention to every aspect of it.
So if you know your site is bad, improve it. It really needs improvement right now, as I can hardly see the goal of the site, I can't even find any of your projects or even information about it. Also, the links page does not contain links, or even copy-able text... no php required, just a little html knowledge and an eye for design could improve this greatly.

A tech demo is a good way of showing people what they can expect (or rather, a gameplay demo and preferrably a playable demo!) and a little text that emphasizes the strong points of your game are important things. How would you expect people to buy your game if they don't even know what it's going to give them? Be clear, be enthousiastic, and probably most important, provide them the actual fun you promised... ;)

Not that I'm in this bussiness, but you pick up some stuff by reading and common sense, I think. Maybe this helps you some? :)

Although I wasn't asking for advice on the grounds of posting this thread, redesigning the site is a good idea.

I'm going to stick with the hosting I've acquired although switching to a premium package, offering no ads or pop ups for that matter.

And please, no more advice or questions on my 'project'; after many attempts at making a start in the industry, I am aware of what I must do to succeed.

Captain P, I know what I'm doing, so please, stop ;)
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-02 00:41:14 UTC Post #155751
Ok, I am lost. Why did you make a thread. You seem like you need a lot of help that you don't want. And your not asking for mappers. So....?

Tycell, thank you; I'm getting pissed off of getting advice from people who have no experience in the industry.

Before you ask, yes, I do have experience; after spending a summer working on a debut shoot 'em up and failing to find proper publishing I know what must be done to succeed.
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-02 17:29:37 UTC Post #155857
Well, Kaido. All I can do is wish you good luck!
Any publisher would be lucky to grab you. :D

So I am guessing this is just your way of free advertising then?
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-02 18:15:04 UTC Post #155867
Captain P, I know what I'm doing, so please, stop wink-wink - ;)
Judging by your site, you don't come over as someone who knows what he's doing... ;)
But I'll stop. I've got lots of things to learn myself too. Good luck mate.

So whats the story / theme / setting of your game?
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-03 00:17:56 UTC Post #155891
Not that I have anything to hide , but I can't tell you the story of the game.

The theme's a noir fantasy sci-fi blend that I'm trying really hard not to fill with stupid cliche's :aggrieved:

Now that you mentioned a debut shooter and failing getting a publisher, why don't you put it up for free? Sounds like good portfolio stuff to me. Such things can improve confidence, you know. :)
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-03 14:37:20 UTC Post #156009
I agree with Captain P. Unless, you have other plans for it. If you're worrying about hosting, don't. There are plenty of places out there that would be more than willing to host a free game.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea ;). I'll look into it; once I've found someone willing to host it I'll add a link from this thread.

Yeah, about that; seeing as I'm using a hotmail account which had a crappy virus finder. The son-of-a-bitch quarantined it, have to send it through my 3rdagegames account:
