Here's the question:

If I took the time to put every applicable HL2 material in a HL1 wad and preserve the awsome detail/crispness of the textures, would you use it?

Or has this already been done?

This is something everyone should download. Hopefully it'll be like a new default wad.

So Yay, or Nay?

HL1 = 8bit textures. 16x16 256 index 255 alphatest

I've methods of making textures look alot better tho. Exampled in many of my maps. Trust me, i think it would be worth it.

meh it all depends on the texture scale Salty, I'd probably use the textures definetly Rim. It's a great idea. I always downscale my textures anyway.

MOST DEF YES! :)

Worldcraft dudes CSS to CS1.6 textures looked nice, so I say do it :)

I personally think the HL2 textures are horrible to map with, they dont exactly line up evenly (tiles and such) and there's bugger all in the way of nice 'trim' and 'glue' textures. Also alot of the textures need bumpmapping and shader effects to be effective. But that aside, i'm sure lot's of people would use it Rimrook.

The HL1 defaults are blurry.

I rarely rescale my textures unless needed anyway and almost are always scaled by 1. They look good anyway, right?

I'm just puting my texturing skills to good use. Though the demo for my mod will back up one day.

EDIT: I'll retile and realign them. Make some of them random and such as well.

And Yes, there are lots of trims in HL2. Every wall has a corresponding trim. :D

oh yeah, i gotta compbine some things from the original HL wad, like some switches, the aaatrigger and sky texes, and all of the default texlight textures. Maybe some new water as well.

Is a new Materials.txt necessary? Lights.rad?

halflife2.wad is complete. I need a good and easy webhost to hold onto it. it's 65.5 mb. that isn't too large, is it?

I wouldn't exactly like to try distributing it with a mod, I'll give you that. :) I could give you some space to host it on if you like...

it's zipped size is 65.5 mb.

should i just offer it to be sent via email to everyone? i could do that if you ask for it that way.

hm. true.

i could try the ftp login. if it doesn't work, i'll host it on my uber-limited space just for you to get it and then you can host it.

awsome that you offerec. thanks.

What exactly is it? Just a wad file with Half Life 2 textures in it?
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-18 23:00:42 UTC Post #169421
JUST a wad file with Half-Life 2 textures in it? This is THE wad file with Half-Life 2 textures in it!

Its not THE wad to rule them all. Converting Source textures is easy, it just extremely tedious. Kudos to you though Rimrook, you obviously have WAY too much time on your hands.

Its not THE wad to rule them all.
But it is the only half-life 2 wad, as far as I know.

:o

Any word on the hosting issue? This thing sounds GREAT!
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-19 07:16:34 UTC Post #169479
I could host it on my place when i get the wad.
There would be more sources to get it then.

I've given rimrook an ftp login on m0px.net for it.. hopefully he'll make use of it :)

I'm trying to but i can't do it here or at skool. I'll host it exclusively somewhere so you can get it, m0p.

But i'll see what i can do about the ftp thing. will probably need it for the mod demo too.

If not mapping for HL, it could be used as a nice reference chart for HL2 mappers. Using Wally it's pretty fast to browse through actually.
I also loaded up Detention again and tried some of Nova Prospekts textures on it. Looks fun.

Nice job, Rimrook. :)

Heh, wow. this really took off quickly.

I tried to keep the names as close to the originals as possible. The HL2 names are too long for wally so there shortened.

Not every texture made it into the wad. I think i excluded 20 that were lights or accidentally extracted skins. The lights were so few in numbers, about 6, that i didn't bother including them and making up a new .rad file for them.

Thanks for all of the great feedback. Lemme know how they turn out in a map.

POST SCREENS PLEASE!
:glad:

No, i don't have any time at all with school and all. I just did this really quick in a total of 9 hours straight over the weekend. DCC thought i had the patience of a Rock. :D
