Grrr... This is just ticking me off. All the textures ARE JUST FINE!!!!! It says surface extents are too large, It's being a total PISS OFF to me right now. Could someone check the vmf out and see if they can find the problem?

The area outside the inner box has been badly clipped. I would delete that part and remake it. It shouldnt take you long.
The map doesn't look very promising though...
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-19 21:57:36 UTC Post #175393
Well, screw you about the promising thing. I've been working on it for 2 days with breaks for school, lunch, dinner, family time, tv time and beating the rest of my games time. I don't know what part was badly clipped is the problem!

I could see right when I opened the map there was something wrong with the brushwork.

If this is your reaction, I probably won't bother to download any other problem VMFs you post in the future. 2 days is not an excuse for over-stretched textures and such.

That screeny Kasperg posted looks like an absolute mess. It all looks very poorly aligned and in absolutely un-necessary shapes/formation, Kasperg is right here.

TigerStar, if that's the attitude you have when you're requesting assistance from us, you shouldn't bother.

In fact, I am asking everyone at TWHL not to help you until you've changed your attitude.

Well I'm not gonna answer if your going to be like that...

You need to learn Displacement mapping TigerStar: I assume that what you're trying to do from that messy screenshot is create a water bit with a shoreline. Google for the Snarkpit and look up the tutorial for it.

Oh, and if you react like that again, you can expect most of the community to totally ignore you.

See how nice Ant is? He gave you guidance even when you behave badly.

We shall crown Ant "Saint Ant" from now on.

Well, sorry. I tend to get pissed when people say "OMFGZORSTHISSUXBALLSLOLBADBRUSHESFORFUCKSSAKELOLOLOLLOLOL!!!"

If you're going to say something of mine sucks, then please do it properly, and tell how I can fix it.

It's not wise to react offensive if you need help, but that should be obvious, non? As for feedback, feel free to ignore it if you don't like it. You may throw away a possible source of valuable feedback (knowing Kasperg, he can provide some good insight if you would've asked), but who cares about that these days?

As for working on a map for 2 whole days... some people work on maps for many months, and on mods for years... and no, that shot Kasp provided doesn't look promising indeed. By the looks of it, you lack some technical knowledge. Read around a few sites, visit the Valve wiki and spend some time familiarizing. Asking for tips isn't a bad idea either.
// Reading your profile... So you're 11 years old? That's no problem. My little brother of 10 can map too and doesn't do a bad job actually. But your attitude looks troublesome though. If you don't care, why would anyone care to help you out? If my brother wouldn't give a thing about mapping, I would never have taught him. It's that simple.

Oh, he's eleven.

Give him twenty years. He'll become a mapper yet.

Don't forget to come back to TWHL when you're mapping for HL9.

Mapping is a daunting thing. I've worked on a CS:S map for over 4 months now and it's still not done. I'm guessing that you've played through HL2 or CS:S and really want to make some of the things that they've done, but you're going to find it difficult to do something as complex as VALVE's or Turtle Rock's work.

Start simple. Make a room, rather than an outdoor thing. Outdoor maps are a lot harder to do for a beginner, and you're gonna struggle, as the screenie indicates. Take a look at the Beginner tutorials on the site: they may be for HL1, but they still work. Don't expect anything brilliant to arrise out of your first maps: they're gonna suck. Nearly everyone's first map totally sucks.

If you can't take constructive criticism as demonstrated by Kasperg (who is one the sites best mappers) then you're gonna find it very hard to become a good mapper. Exaggerating what Kasperg said into something that doesn't even resemble what he initially said is childish.

wait, this is for source?! w0w, it looks from the screenie that it's a hl1 map. in that case, use displacements and blend textures to make watever it is your making.

there will be tutorials on how to do this as soon as Ant gets time to mark them up :P

Dang it only took me five months to do Dedication...I bet your map will explode with goodness.

Tiger: I have no idea what you were trying to make but it almost looks like a bad decompile :P

Use the Valve Wikipedia and search displacements...Add me on MSN if you need further help. Also take it from me that eventually you will improve in literacy and calmness.

I didn't say it sucked. I was just pointing out that it is bad and you need to fix it.

I don't think he'll ever come back to TWHL anymore, at least not for twenty years.

Some people are just not emotionally ready for mapping, which can be very taxing at times.

The mappers who made de_corse and de_gambaru spent over a year in making their maps.

Do you know of any Pixar film that was made in less a year? I think it took them over seven years to make "The Incredibles".

And we all know how long it took Valve to come up with Half-Life 2, which is an undeniable masterpiece.
