All my major troubles with my compo map are fixed...

Submitting at the end of today :)

If at least half of the people who said they were going to submit maps do, this should be a very successful competition.

I'm fighting the urge to destroy the map myself, hehe.
There are some funny things I will talk about once we are done with the judging.

This enthusiasm of people submitting their maps is what makes mapping worth the effort, and gives sites like TWHL a noble reason to exist.

I like the entries were getting, really makes me wish i decided to enter. :(

Hell yes! You're the Juggernaut, Bitch! :P

Good luck to all that have entered! I can't wait to check out the new additions in the MV :)

There have been many times when I have viewed mapping as a time-waster somewhat, since there is no direct benefits like money, fame, nor sexy ladies lol.

However, I've come to the realization that anything you enjoy doing, as long as you continue to learn/grow at, could never be a waste of time.

Plus, I suppose there are worse things I could be doing...

I think we should keep this thread open until the results are posted. I would like to comment each of the entries.
And Dr. Mapper should start thinking a theme for the Source Compo.
Thanks to everyone who participated and wrecked my map. Sorry again for the little errors in the rmf.

Yeah, this seems a good place to post our comments. Kasperg, I'll get the entries to you soon.

Kasperg, after the judging, don't forget to tell us about this.

I looked at the entries that were posted in the vault. I really think everybody did an awesome job. It was cool to see all the different ways the basemap was interpreted. And, just a thought, it looks like the next compo should be a splash-screen compo, you guys are good!

It has been talked about several times: Is there a possibility of having simultaneous Hl1/Source competitions? I don't think there are that many people who would participate on both at the same time. With the current setup, HL1 mappers have to wait too much from one competition to the next, and same thing happens to Source mappers.
If it means too much trouble with coding etc, then forget what I just said. I just think that's the way most mappers feel about it. Time for another poll?

Back to the topic. I have only seen the MV entries so far, and picking 3 clear winners is going to be difficult. That's good news, I think.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-18 23:41:27 UTC Post #180895
I wish for the Hl1/Source simultaneous idea too. That would be cool.. That could also add the possibility of a new site position as a "contest judge".. Not really any power, but people would know who's doing it

Juging is quite the task if there is a lot of entries. I would like to help judge if no one minds, especially the compo i get to choose for winning the HLDM compo. I Spent a long time choosing a good theme too

I think we could trust some members to be judges, but how would someone earn that? It's not like we can practice or anything.

What ever compo is that I'm out of it! I've got enough obligations already:

2 minimods
1 mod
1 chapter for Dark Truths(a Hl1 mod)
3 DM maps

Conclusion: I can't be bothered right now. :P

Those are only obligations if you want them to be.

Just collated all the entries. Bloody hell, some rampant idiocy abounding. I mean, usually we get some people uploading text files and BSPs and stuff, but this time we've had all kinds of stupid rule-ignoring stuff. Took, like, half an hour to get them all together.

Anyway, results soon.

If anyone has played at least some on the entries, it is obvious that the judging wasn't easy at all.
When the results show up, I would't want anyone to feel offended, because almost all of the maps were surprisingly good. Good job.

Congrats to SlayerA, ZombieLoffe,
and all who participated to make this a popular
compo.

Special thanks to Kasperg for a fun map to
participate in, and Judges for contributing
their time/effort.

I Hope more entrants will add their entries to
the MV, now that it's over.

Judges: you will post judgie notes?

I'd like mine.. I know the darkness effected it... I never had a problem with the darkness.. but other people have.. this is going to be a problem for me and creating my horror mod. If only there was a config file I could include for the monitor brightness... lol :D

Well, I didn't think darkness was a such a big problem.
The presentation (splash screen, console background etc) was good. Textures were great even though they weren't too visible in most places. The part with the tank model looked better than rest of the map, and the volumetric light effects were neat. Since you deleted most of the provided destructible elements (the pipes for example), your approach was similar to ZL's. Comparing both entries, I think yours wasn't as interactive or dramatic, which doesn't mean it wasn't close to getting the trophy. I think less retexturing work and more brainstorming would have made it one of the winners.
