I agree, intolerance of intolerance doesn't make sense, but then most people's opinions/beliefs don't make sense to me.

I disagree with your opinion/belief that people's opinions/beliefs dont make sense to you

Haha, how is it a opinion/belief that stuff doesn't make sense to me?
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-28 06:45:15 UTC Post #182372
so in your opinion you dont believe that having an opinion/belief about it is an opinion onion?
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-28 06:49:48 UTC Post #182374
Having an opinion about it would be an opinion, yes, but it's not an opinion/belief unless someone else believes that things do make sense to me... and nobody does. :)

Those three atrocities were all caused by DEVOUT RELIGIOUS PEOPLE
Their religion's basic principles are clearly against murder. You can hardly call anyone who participated in that "devout".
You are being tricked into thinking every political decision in the past (and in the present) is caused by religion. A lot of filmmakers and writers are obviously anti-religious which helps a lot in shaping the view of people outside the religious community, even at a subconscious level.
I know many very honest and hard working people with no religious inclinations at all. I also know devout people who are evil.

Religion guarantees nothing.
Absolutely true. The question is, would honesty and morality be the same today if the world had never had the influence of ANY religion? We will never know.

religion doesn't mean intolerance, but christianity is remarkably intolerant about things society has managed to accept for a long time. Not that long ago interracial marriage was still not accepted by the church.

Yeah, that's very hypocritical. Constantly saying that Christians are "intolerant" about this or that is also "intolerant".
PLEASE stop saying people are intolerant of intolerance, it doesn't make sense
Well of course it does. They don't like the way you think, and you don't like the way they think. What you see as intolerance is actually a set of beliefs for them. So you are not being intolerant of intolerance, you are being intolerant of their beliefs. It's not that hard to understand.

Here's my two cents on all this crap:

You're all being incredibly stupid.

The fact that you guys are arguing over some stupid Internet video just boggles my mind, especially when combined with the fact that there are far more pertinent issues in the world to contend with.

Sohmer, the creator of the webcomic "Least I Could Do" raised this point in relation to the turds who are protesting against the Da Vinci Code and I quote:

"Why don?t we make sure every kid under 18 on the planet has an education and 3 meals a day, then we can get back to discussing the inaccuracies to a fictional story?"

Here's the problem with all of you: you're all too stubborn to just ignore one another. We've got Religious nuts who attempt to justify most things with Religion, and we've got the Anti-Religion nuts who just seem to like sparking controversy just for the heck of it.

I stopped trying to inform people of my beliefs a while ago and you know why? No gives a flying fuck. No one cares that you're a Muslim or a Christian or an Atheist. Stop trying to push your beliefs on people who are either too entranced by a particular mindset or just don't give a crap because IT WILL NEVER WORK.

Fix the world, then discuss these niggling issues of crap from someone's mind that's appeared on the Internet.

I'm neither religious nor anti-religious. I agree with some things in religion and disagree with a lot of other things. However, I would never make a stupid song or a movie with the objective (or consequence) of making fun of others or hurting people's feelings. It sickens me to know that any similar film to the "Da Vinci Code" but with a Jew or Muslim theme would be banned and the World would be outraged.

For me, freedom stops where another person's freedom begins.
Of course, the church and the anti-church people don't think the same way.

I know a lot of religious people and it gets tiresome to hear the same accusations of fundamentalism over and over again. There are extreme cases and ridiculous things the heads of the church say. That doesn't mean the rest have to stand the constant bashing.

Remembering the caricature crisis, I don't think they should've been published, and I also think the reaction of burning buildings etc was pretty stupid. Both action and reaction were going against someone's freedom.

And people please, dump the personal insults in the forum, it just looks childish.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-29 09:40:18 UTC Post #182551
I don't have anything against religion, despite being quite atheist (or atleast agnostic) - I just think religious people shouldn't impose their beliefs on others.

Eric Schwartz said it pretty good in said song:
Now I am not anti-christian,
before you grab a rope,
there is beauty in religion,
and joy, and love, and hope,
and we're all looking for the answer,
to this colossal cosmic cause,
but who the fuck are you to turn your view into my law?

The song isn't really about mocking christians, it's about them trying to well, influence non-believers where they shouldn't.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-29 09:49:36 UTC Post #182552
The days when christianity was imposed are well over, at least in where I live.
Even so, try to picture yourself in their situation. If you thought there was some superpower and moral code that you thought made life better for you and your peers (as well as making you feel better about everything), would you not try to tell people about it?
Can't you see that the reason for spreading religion doesn't always have to be about controlling people?

Indeed, like... atheism :D.

Oh, so nothing offensive can be said about anyone? There's no universal freedom to "not be criticised".

So, Orph, what you're saying is that you will give up your chance at eternal salvation on the chance that it MIGHT be right, strictly on the principle that some people you dont even like won't shut up about it? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face...

Well, Jobabob, Christians are supposed to do everything BY what the bible says, so pretty much, you're right. lol.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-29 15:55:41 UTC Post #182604
The Bible is a collection of a lot of books written by humans over a long period of time. Christians are not supposed to do everything by what the Bible says. They are supposed to follow the teachings of someone named Christ, feautured in the New Testament.
That's why all the "the Bible is full of contradictions!" statements are true but meaningless to most Christians.

So one should accept jesus christ as his personal saviour because... you MIGHT go to hell if you don't? Why don't we just follow every religion on earth because we MIGHT go to its hell when we die?

as zombieloffe says, are you willing to take the chance that christianity is the correct religion? As far as i'm concerned living forever would get really tedious, we're just animals with a bit more cognitive ability.

I really hate it when you realise that you 'realise' because electrical signals are flying around in your head. Someone brainwash me to believing death isnt the end please.

Posted 18 years ago2006-05-29 21:11:35 UTC Post #182649
I don't decide where ANYONE is going. That's what you 'intellectual elites' don't seem to understand: Christians don't decide who goes where, God decided a long time ago that people who don't do what he says are going to hell, (not because they don't do what he says, but because doing what he says is the only way to atone for the crappy stuff we DID do...) Christians didn't SAY this, they just KNOW this because they read the bible.

That is why if a Christian s doing what they are supposed to do, they are not judging anyone. They are just aware of God's previous judgement and are concerned for others.

Sure it seems like some christians are judging everyone and telling everyone that they are going to hell, but they are not being very good christians and they are spoiling it for the rest of us who actually care about people instead of ourselves, and who want peace and not all kinds of "ZOMG UR GOING 2 HELLZ0R!" crap.

But you find that if you don't want to listen to a moral code, you just have to look at the imperfect people who try to follow it. If all it takes to disregard it all is just seeing someone else make mistakes doing it, then why do ANYTHING? It's all been done AND screwed up before YOU got here...

this may amaze you but despite not fearing an eternal death in the firey pits of hell for not following what it says in a particular large tome, I don't have any plans to do as many immoral and illegal things I can before I die because there wont be repercussions for me. People can be good without using fear to drive them a certain way.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-30 05:26:17 UTC Post #182681
People have the potential to do a lot of things but largely lack the motivation to do so. Fear = good motivator. More power to you if you can live a decent life withour religion but a good chunk of people need the fire and brimstone to keep 'em on the right track.

Are you saying that if you removed religion from america it would implode on itself because the majority of people would become twisted murderers, rapists, etc as soon as the 'barrier' to immorality was cleared

Christians didn't SAY this, they just KNOW this because they read the bible.

No, but some would. :P Which isn't to say that religion's the ideal way to keep miscreants in line, especially since I don't think there's any surveys like "If you weren't a Christian, would you become a murderer/rapist?" Either way, it's not going away until mankind is extinct.
